distance percepti<strong>on</strong> is not <strong>in</strong>fluenced by <strong>the</strong> comb filter effect, and nei<strong>the</strong>r do <strong>the</strong><br />

l<strong>in</strong>ear distorti<strong>on</strong>s (see Secti<strong>on</strong> 2.2.1) cause <strong>in</strong>side-<strong>the</strong>-head locatedness, nor do <strong>the</strong>y<br />

prevent fr<strong>on</strong>t-back reversals (THEILE 1975).<br />

The elevati<strong>on</strong> effect can be attributed to <strong>the</strong> localisati<strong>on</strong> stimulus selecti<strong>on</strong>, too. If two<br />

loudspeakers (arranged symmetrically with respect to <strong>the</strong> median plane) are moved <strong>on</strong><br />

a circle <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> horiz<strong>on</strong>tal plane with <strong>the</strong> listener be<strong>in</strong>g positi<strong>on</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre, <strong>the</strong><br />

auditory event locati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> median plane will move with <strong>the</strong> discrim<strong>in</strong>ated average<br />

source distance. The mean of <strong>the</strong> distance and directi<strong>on</strong> lies <strong>on</strong> a circle <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> median<br />

plane. The elevati<strong>on</strong> angle results from sound colour properties that, due to <strong>the</strong><br />

localisati<strong>on</strong> stimulus selecti<strong>on</strong>, are not <strong>in</strong>fluenced by <strong>the</strong> comb filter effect.<br />

This is proven by <strong>the</strong> fact outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Secti<strong>on</strong> 2.2 that equivalent <strong>in</strong>terchannel level and time<br />

differences (loudspeakers positi<strong>on</strong>ed at <strong>the</strong> listener’s sides al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>teraural axis) do not<br />

lead to different elevati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> phantom source, even though spectral differences will<br />

occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> crucial frequency regi<strong>on</strong> around 8 kHz (see BLOOM 1977). If <strong>the</strong> listener<br />

moves <strong>the</strong> head sidewards by a few centimetres <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> directi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>on</strong>e loudspeaker, <strong>the</strong><br />

resultant change of <strong>the</strong> (elevati<strong>on</strong>-salient) spectrum will be very different from <strong>the</strong> change<br />

that a head rotati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> fr<strong>on</strong>t of a substitute (real) sound source would produce.<br />

The spectrum salient to perceived elevati<strong>on</strong> is not <strong>the</strong> result<strong>in</strong>g spectrum of <strong>the</strong> ear<br />

signals, but <strong>the</strong> average spectrum of <strong>the</strong> two ear signals that <strong>the</strong> loudspeakers produce<br />

separately. If, as a result of <strong>the</strong> localisati<strong>on</strong> stimulus selecti<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> distance e and<br />

horiz<strong>on</strong>tal directi<strong>on</strong> ϕ of <strong>the</strong> phantom source have been determ<strong>in</strong>ed, it will be located<br />

<strong>on</strong> a circle with <strong>the</strong> radius e. The plane of this circle will be perpendicular to <strong>the</strong><br />

horiz<strong>on</strong>tal plane and will exhibit <strong>the</strong> directi<strong>on</strong> ϕ.<br />

The positi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> circle is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> average spectrum, i.e. <strong>the</strong> phantom<br />

source will be perceived to be at <strong>the</strong> locati<strong>on</strong> at which its sound colour characteristics<br />

match those of a substitute sound source as closely as possible.<br />

This noti<strong>on</strong> expla<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> measurements made by DAMASKE 1969/70 who<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ed perceived elevati<strong>on</strong> as a functi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> angle of <strong>the</strong> stereo base ∆Ω= 2|Ω A |<br />

= 2|Ω B | us<strong>in</strong>g band-limited noise (0.65 to 4.5 kHz) as <strong>the</strong> test signal. In pr<strong>in</strong>ciple, he<br />

found that as ∆Ω 180° <strong>the</strong> elevati<strong>on</strong> angle ε 90°, even though <strong>the</strong> directi<strong>on</strong>determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

frequency band was not c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> noise signal. Regrettably,<br />

DAMASKE did not report <strong>the</strong> associated distances of <strong>the</strong> auditory events. The result<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tradicts <strong>the</strong> summ<strong>in</strong>g localisati<strong>on</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> associati<strong>on</strong> model predicts a dependency of <strong>the</strong> elevati<strong>on</strong> and distance of a<br />

phantom source <strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bandwidth of <strong>the</strong> signal. If <strong>the</strong> bandwidth is below a critical value,<br />

localisati<strong>on</strong> stimulus selecti<strong>on</strong> is not possible. In this case, elevati<strong>on</strong> and distance percepti<strong>on</strong><br />

do no l<strong>on</strong>ger result from <strong>the</strong> spectra that <strong>the</strong> loudspeakers produce <strong>in</strong>dividually.
