What a welcom<strong>in</strong>g school looks like<br />

All staff is aware of and understands the process for receiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>English</strong><br />

language learners and their families.<br />

There is a school reception team (e.g., adm<strong>in</strong>istra<strong>to</strong>r, office adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />

assistant, ESL/ELD teacher, <strong>in</strong>terpreter, and settlement worker, where<br />

available).<br />

Families are <strong>in</strong>formed about the necessary documentation for school<br />

registration.<br />

••<br />

There is a designated, comfortable place for the family and reception team<br />

<strong>to</strong> meet and share <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

Ample time is dedicated for the <strong>in</strong>take <strong>in</strong>terview and for orientation<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation about school and basic rout<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

clubs, and other extracurricular activities;<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>troductions <strong>to</strong> students with similar <strong>in</strong>terests;<br />

——<br />

expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g lunchtime procedures.<br />

Multil<strong>in</strong>gual signs, <strong>in</strong> the languages of the community, are visible <strong>in</strong> the school.<br />

There are efforts <strong>to</strong> build cross-cultural understand<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

(e.g., libraries, community centres, adult ESL classes, places of worship,<br />

coffee or tea, and read announcements <strong>in</strong> home languages or meet fellow<br />
