While aromatherapy techniques rely mainly on essential oils, they believe growing scented plants in your garden offers some benefits as a useful therapy in relieving physical and mental stress. Window boxes or post by the door – to raise the scent up and have it waft indoors. Lastly it is very important to choose plants with scent that pleases you and that they complement each other. Danger Zone A man‟s sweetmeat can be a dog‟s poison, as Hazel Flynn reports. People who love their gardens and their pets are often surprised to learn that their outdoor haven can be an animal danger zone. While most cultivated plants are fine, some are poisonous to pets. “It‟s very important to realise that dogs and cats are not little humans,” says the Australian Veterinary Association‟s Dr Dross McKenzie. “They have different chemical systems and they handle food somewhat differently to us.” Grapes are a good example. A sweet treat for humans they‟re toxic to dogs. “Just half a dozen can cause quite severe kidney problems in dogs,” McKenzie explains. While grapefruit generally grow out of canine reach, the ripe fruit falls to the ground, where dogs will find and eat it. Macadamia nuts are also toxic for dogs, while avocado is a no-no for birds. Says McKenzie: “Budgerigars, cockatiels and canaries are all very susceptible and will die quite rapidly from a relatively small amount. A cutting grown plant is genetically identical to the parent plant (the plant from which the cutting was taken). Plants grown from seed are not necessarily identical to either one or other of their parents. Cuttings provide plants that flower or fruit more quickly. In some plant species cuttings will strike more readily from juvenile material (new growth) which is healthy and vigorous. The will develop roots faster and to produce healthier plants more quickly. For cats, lilies can be fatal. “A couple of petals are enough to produce kidney disease and, left untreated, the cat will most likely die,” McKenzie says. Flowers, leaves and stems of Easter and Asiatic lilies, as well as so called day lilies (genus hemeroocallis) are all dangerous. The shrub known as Brunfelsia is known as “yesterday, today and tomorrow” or “morning, noon and night”, for the way its flowers fade through to white. It is, says dogowner McKenzie, “a very nice plant. But for some reason we don‟t understand, dogs are attracted to the fruit. They eat it, get poisoned, are taken to the vet and treated, recover, and go back to the plant and eat more fruit.” The poison causes diarrhoea and convulsions, and can be fatal without emergency treatment.
