Parents, Staff and Students
Raising children is often quoted as being the hardest job in the world. We, as
parents and as teachers, want the very best for the children in our care. So, is the job
of parenting getting harder rather than easier? Technological developments have
made many of the mundane chores of our everyday lives easier and quicker to
accomplish, such as housework. We no longer need to spend hours per week hand
washing and wringing out clothes. We now simply pop them into a washing
machine that does most of the hard work for us.
Technology has brought about many time saving devices for us, yet many families
are more time poor than ever. Advances in technology have also created a world
where we are accessible 24/7. We can be contacted via a multitude of media at
anytime by friends, family and work, and this often impacts upon our down time.
Parents are also working harder than ever to provide a multitude of opportunities for
their children in order to give them every advantage possible. These tangible
opportunities are wonderful and reap so many benefits for our children, but what are
the intangibles that are also important?
Michael Grose, a parenting expert, espouses that the development of confidence,
character and resilience are the key areas that will lead to long term achievement
and success for our children.
Confidence – taking their place in the world. Developing confidence in your child is
one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Confident children grow up to be
confident adults who have a strong sense of self and are able to achieve well in their
future directions. Fostering a positive mindset and sense of optimism, combined
with helping your child to overcome fears and anxieties so that they are able to take
academic and social risks, will develop a lasting self-sufficiency for your child.
Character – developing the behaviours and attitudes to succeed. Character is about
doing what is right, not what is easy.
Resilience – coping with setbacks and hurdles. Many children grow up with a
natural sense of resilience. They are able to ‘dust themselves off and pick
themselves up’ after a difficult situation and move on in a positive manner. Not all
of us, however, have this natural resilience. The good news is that resilience can be
learnt by developing independence, problem-solving, optimism and social
connection.
These three attributes align nicely with our College motto of Excellence, Care &
Commitment. We, as a school community, continually strive to challenge the
individual to achieve and act with purpose and character, as noted in our College
Mission. These are not merely words; they provide the foundation stones for all that
we do.
Raising children may be the most difficult job in the world but it is also the most
rewarding. For advice and strategies that work visit, Michael Grose’s website:
Traditional Japanese Dance Article
This week, on Tuesday, 7 September, we were fortunate to have the Sakura Dance
Company, a Traditional Japanese Dance Group on the Gold Coast, visit the
College again for two excellent performances. They were so impressed by the
interest everyone showed in their previous performance in May, that they wished
to come back and show us something different. Well they did not disappoint.
In the first performance, Chikako Smith, MC and singer, eloquently explained the
history behind the six traditional dances performed by Junko Thomson, Hiromi
Karita, Kumiko Kerr, Misako Sakai and Fumiko Miyamoto, mother of Taka in
Year 12. Yukiko Nihei, Kizuna Taiko instructor, composed the very impressive
Taiko beat which was played by herself, Junko Thomson and Hiromi Karita.
In the second Performance, Kumiko Kerr, former parent of the College, was the
MC and her energy radiated through the crowd and made the audience have a clear
understanding of the three performances. Firstly, Junko Thompson, Chikako
Smith and Hiromi Karita entertained us with Kyogen “Busu”, a Japanese
traditional comedy play. The audience was in stitches with the comedy and
impressed by the quality of acting displayed by the three ladies. We were then
entertained by two traditional dances, Fumiko Miyamoto and Misako Sakai.
Finally, the audience was enthralled by the Taiko Beat as explained above.
I would like to make a special mention of Miyuki Koido who dressed the women
in their traditional kimonos. As I have explained before in my previous article
about the Sakura Dance Company, much time, effort and skill goes into dressing a
person in a Kimono, and the ladies would not have looked as elegant without
Miyuki Koido’s expertise.
I would also like to thank Meiko Kawashima, Tomoko Tomikawa and Yukino
Madsen for assisting with preparations for the performances. I very much
appreciate all that they do. Without all the support of the helpful Japanese parents
of the College and groups, like the Sakura Dance Company, giving so generously
of their time, the Japanese Culture Club would not be what it is today. Thank you
all so much for all that you do for the College. Our students are extremely lucky
to have these experiences and value them greatly. We look forward to welcoming
you back again next year and cannot wait to see yet another different performance.
A.B. Paterson College appreciates the time and effort you put into performing for
us, twice this year, each time with something so special and educational. Should
anyone be interested in learning traditional Japanese dance, please contact me and
I will be happy to give you Junko Thomson’s contact details.
Japanese Restaurant Visit
What a fantastic culminating activity for our Japanese unit on
food – visiting a Japanese restaurant! On Thursday, 26 August,
the Year 9 cohort of Japanese students was treated to a three
course authentic Japanese meal at Yuuga Restaurant in Surfers
Paradise. Stepping onto the bus, our expectations were high and
our stomachs were empty in readiness for the afternoon feast.
When we arrived, we were treated to a very ‘omoshiroi’
(interesting) meal of fried tofu which gave me the opportunity to
hone my limited chopstick skills. The second meal that arrived
was ‘obentou’ (Japanese style lunchbox), which consisted of a
variety of delicious meals including sushi. Typical of the
Japanese culture, the meals were beautifully assembled in an
orderly fashion. At this stage, we were replete with food,
although there were two meals still to arrive.
Everyone pre-ordered their main which came accompanied with
a side salad. To conclude our Japanese cuisine experience, we
were given miso soup which is a truly traditional Japanese dish.
I can honestly say that, when stepping back on the bus at the end
of the day, our expectations were met, our stomachs were full
and our spirits were high.
Omoideni nokoru shokuji to hitotoki desita. Chefsann,
Arigatou. (It was a memorable meal and a wonderful afternoon
– compliments to the chef!)
Public Speaking Competition Prizes:
In Years 5 – 12, the winners of the Grand-Final will receive
a Dymocks book voucher.
The winner of the
Year 12 Grand-
Final is eligible for a
bursary from Bond
University.
As soon as we arrived we were seated and given the safety
instructions in Japanese. Thankfully my table was lucky enough
to have Saki Abe sitting with us, so we had our own personal
translator. After the three entrees of beautiful looking food,
most of the girls at my table were feeling full. I thought,
“goodie that must be all” but then they came out with our main
meals, with a bowl of miso soup and some rice. I think that all
of the students and teachers agree that it was a great afternoon
The bursary covers 50% of tuition fees of any single or
combined Bond University undergraduate programme
(excluding Bond University’s Medical Programme). The
current value of the bursary is over $30,000. The winner of
each grand final will also receive a plaque, as a
commemoration of his/her outstanding achievement. There
is also an aggregate shield provided in both the Primary and
Secondary areas, for best-performing school in the finals.
Mr Ian Taylor – Director of Activities
On behalf of the students who attended, I would just like to say a
very big thank you to all the teachers and staff for putting in all
the hard effort to make this event possible.
