Women year protection rate<br />

Number of children under 18 years who have lost either a mother (maternal orphan), a father (paternal orphan) or both parents (a double<br />

orphan) due to HIV/AIDS.<br />

Previously the definition used was: Number of children under 15 years whose mothers have died of HIV/AIDS. A summary of the definitions<br />

used:<br />

ASSA 2000 - maternal orphans less than 15 years<br />

ASSA 2002 - maternal orphans less than 18 years<br />

ASSA 2003 - maternal orphans less than 18 years<br />

Number of people estimated to be living with AIDS defining conditions.<br />

The HIV incidence rate is the percentage of people who are uninfected at the beginning of the period who will become infected over the<br />

twelve months. It refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of HIV diagnosed each year. (The term ‘prevalence’ refers<br />

to the estimated population of people who have HIV at any given time.)<br />

Percentage of women surveyed testing positive for HIV.<br />

Percentage of population estimated to be HIV positive. Population used as denominator is generally the projected population calculated<br />

from the given model.<br />

The number of people who are HIV+.<br />

Percentage of total deaths attributed to AIDS related causes.<br />

Proportion of women coming for their first antenatal visit who are tested for HIV.<br />

Percentage of people surveyed (of various age groups) who report having first had sexual intercourse at age 14 years or younger.<br />

Proportion of pregnant women receiving some antenatal care.<br />
