From 12:15 pm to 12:30 pm, teachers assume the responsibility of supervising students including students who are returning from having lunch at home. Please do not send children to arrive at school earlier than 12:15 pm. SECURITY PROCEDURES SECURITY- HOW DO WE DO IT HERE? We keep our school a safe place! We ask all visitors to enter by the front door, check IN and OUT of the office, and wear a name tag issued by the office. We ask that parents or visitors sign in at the office and obtain a name tag before proceeding to classrooms to meet with a teacher or for any other purpose that would require them to have access to classrooms. For parents, who come to volunteer and have obtained their police clearance, they can pick up their name tag and sign in on the volunteer board in the main office. SECURITY OF DOORS All doors are locked when school is in session except for the front door. You will need to ring the bell if you require access to the building if the front door is locked. At dismissal times parents are asked to wait for their children either at their meeting spots or in the front foyer during inclement weather, at dismissal times. For safety and security reasons, the doors in the main foyer leading into classroom areas will be locked at all times while students are in the school. FIRE ALARM/LOCKDOWN/EVACUATION All CBE schools are required to practice a minimum of 6 fire drills, one lockdown and one evacuation procedure practice every year. A fire drill is the procedure students would follow to evacuate the building in case of an emergency. During fire drills we teach students to remain silent at all times, move to the correct exit, then go to their assigned areas outdoors. A lockdown is the routine exercised when a potentially dangerous situation arises in or around a school. An evacuation would be required if students were unable to re-enter the building due to unsafe conditions created by the emergency situation. Teachers will discuss these drills with students to help them understand the need for these types of procedures to take place in a calm, quiet and orderly fashion. SCHOOL CLOSING/EVACUATION Parents will be advised of any school closures due to inclement weather, by reports issued by the CBE to the radio or TV stations. In the event of an evacuation due to an emergency situation at the school, arrangements have been made with our neighboring school, Samuel W. Shaw, to accommodate our students until alternate arrangements can be made. Children will be supervised until parents arrive. HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION STUDENT AGENDAS How they are used: The use of student agendas has the full support of our School Council. They are designed to promote daily contact between school and home, maximize a clear twoway communication, help students organize homework and assignments, promote our daily reading program in the primary grades and build responsibility in each student. Please read the agenda daily and initial the date page, write any notes, questions, or concerns on that page and ensure that your child takes it to school the next day for his/her teacher to read. As this is a critical part of our communication, students will be asked to purchase a new agenda for $5 should it be lost. Information available on D2L 12
Besides the use of the agenda, many teachers use D2L (Desire to Learn) to post links and information as a resource to support the learning of their students. How to access D2L: 1) open internet browser (Explorer, Safari, Firefox, etc.) 2) go to JJ website (http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b270) 3) click on “login to Desire2Learn” logo 4) students login like they do on the school computers PARENT HANDBOOK We provide a Parent Handbook which contains information for parents about our school as well as our school calendar for the year in concise format. SYNREVOICE This automated phone system is used to send phone and email messages to all parents or specific groups or classes about upcoming events or important information requiring parents’ attention. SCHOOL WEBSITE – http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b270 Our webpage contains information about important dates for the month and a number of links to supplemental information sources from CBE, the Area and the school. SCHOOL NEWSLETTER – Posted on our website during the first week of each month. It contains information regarding upcoming events, activities planned by each grade, student write-ups about their learning, message from the principal and superintendent and many more items. CURRICULUM NEWSLETTER - distributed at the beginning of each reporting period. ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORT AND SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT PLAN for the previous school year available for parents on the website in October. OFF-SITE PERMISSION FORMS sent home prior to every field trip to outline purpose and details. STUDENT/PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES are scheduled 3 times per year. Further information is available throughout the year by contacting the teacher. We meet with parents in September for an “Information Exchange” which constitutes our first reporting period. We encourage ongoing dialogue and involvement with every parent. Staff welcomes your questions and comments.
