CALGARY BOARD OF EDUCATION FIVE RESULT STATEMENTS Our Trustees have provided clear direction: Our job is to ensure our students achieve success. R-1: Mega Result - Each student, in keeping with his or her individual abilities and gifts, will complete high school with a foundation of learning to function effectively in life, work and continued learning. The voices of all stakeholders are heard and valued as we work toward our common purpose. The school is a fertile environment for mind, body and senses. We plan for meaningful learning experiences and connections that deepen the learner’s understanding. School-wide teaming, valued support of strategists, and active parent involvement enhance our ability to use flexible groups, provide enrichment, and effectively use staff and parent expertise to meet all of our children’s learning needs. Staff members learn together through reflective practice in Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s). Children and adults are nurtured and stimulated in a culture of positive energy and respect for each other. Everyone can take risks in their learning because they feel safe and cared for. With input from parents, teachers and students, we have been able to establish foundational statements to carry our work forward. They have guided the decision-making aspects of the school. LEADERSHIP MESSAGE Welcome and Bienvenue to another fulfilling year of learning and working together. In the 2013-2014 school year, we are pleased to have our French Immersion Program expand to Grade 6. The purpose of the handbook is to provide parents and students with important information that guides our daily work at Janet Johnstone School. Parents are encouraged to take the time to review the information with their children and to use it as a handy resource. Our staff looks forward to working with you and thank you for your continued interest, support and involvement. The two school development goals for the 2013-2014 school year will continue to guide our work with students. Outcome 1) Students will achieve and excel at grade level expectations in English Language Arts and in French Language Arts for our French Immersion students in both reading and writing. Outcome 2) Students will model the characteristics of active citizenship and character. 2

Recess Time 10:05 – 10:19 am M-F EARLY DISMISSAL DAYS Please note that students have early dismissal at 12:10 p.m. every Friday. Please check the agenda calendar for exact dates at the back of this book. SCHOOL FEES Kindergarten Fee Inst. Resource Fee $15.00 Activity Fee $35.00 Total $50.00 Grades 1 - 6 Fee Inst. Supplies/Materials $ 30.00 Opt. Incid. Act. Fee $10.00 Total $40.00 Off-site excursions for grades 1-6 are charged per student per trip. School fees are due by September 30, 2013. BUSSING Students who live in Shawnessy, Millrise and Shawnee Slopes outside the 0.8 kilometer walk limit, and students registered in the French Immersion program from designated communities can be bussed and are eligible to stay for lunch. Information regarding the bus fees can be found on-line at http://www.cbe.ab.ca/Parents/fee.asp. There are several options for payment including on-line payment. We ask that parents either put a note in their child’s agenda or call the school office prior to dismissal time when their child is not going to be riding the bus on a particular day. 3
