the process to address any concern that parents may have is as follows: 1) The first step is to make the concern known to the person involved by making an appointment with the staff member or volunteer to discuss the issue. This discussion should not occur in the presence of students, nor during class time and should not be made in the presence of an employee’s co-workers or other volunteers. 2) Secondly, if there is no resolution or continuation of the concern, an appointment should be made to discuss the matter with the principal. 3) At times, concerns expressed can be beyond the scope of the school and will need to be referred to the Area Director. 4) A Concerns and Complaint Form is available in the office if a parent or another individual wishes to use this format to register their concern but is not a requirement to address an issue. This information is also available at the following CBE link http://www.cbe.ab.ca/trustees/whotocontact.asp PARENT INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES JANET JOHNSTONE SCHOOL COUNCIL Welcome to the School Council. As a parent of a child attending Janet Johnstone School, you are automatically a member of School Council (JJSC). The Council consists of parents, teachers and community members who are eager to help guide and provide meaningful feedback on our children’s educational experiences, both in the school and on the school grounds. At our meetings, we give feedback on what has been happening at the school and suggestions for how to make our children’s school experience the best it can be. We also work alongside the Friends of Janet Johnstone School Association (FJJSA) , which is the incorporated nonprofit society responsible for fundraising. One of our responsibilities is to advise the school on how to allocate these fundraising dollars. Our goal is to enhance our children’s learning experiences and opportunities they would otherwise not be able to receive. We work together with the school administration to discuss purchases to be sure we are spending the fundraising dollars wisely. Janet Johnstone School Council (JJSC) would like to remind all parents about the safety issues on the school grounds and in the parking areas adjacent to the school. We understand that parking is limited at the school. We ask you to please be patient and respectful of others. Remember there is no stopping or parking in the bus zones, the handicapped zone, or on any of the residential street corners or in front of private driveways. The number one priority is to help keep our children safe in the traffic turmoil. The upcoming year is going to be full of new experiences and adventures. We can’t tell you enough how wonderful it is to witness first hand, the dedication that the staff and teachers have to our children. We know that it will continue throughout the year. Please join us for our first meeting of the 2013-14 school year on Tuesday, September 10 th at 6:30 pm in the Learning Commons (library). PARENT VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Our Parent Volunteer Program includes all those who volunteer for special programs or field trips, as well as those who come in on a regular basis to assist teachers in the preparation of materials and in helping in a capacity requested by the teacher. In order to ensure that volunteers are always contributing to the effectiveness of the learning of all children the following volunteer creed was developed by a volunteer committee. Volunteer Creed To help enhance the educational programs in consultation with teachers and administration. To keep confidential that which we see. To help build children’s self-esteem. To observe school security and fire routines. To sign in at the office and acquire a name tag. 14
To provide encouragement to all students and teachers. To have fun and enjoy your valuable contribution. SALUTE TO THE FLAG (With right hand held in salute over right eyebrow) Requirements for volunteers Volunteers are asked to sign in and pick up their name tags from the display on the wall opposite the nurse’s room and to return it to the display area prior to leaving the school. It is a requirement of the CBE that all volunteers fill out a Police Check Form to Search and Disclosure Waiver and Release prior to volunteering in the school. This request is processed by our Admin. Assistant. You will be notified by our Volunteer Coordinator once she receives the information that you are approved to work with students. Your police check is valid for 5 years. If you have obtained clearance at another CBE school, please let the office know. Only clearance obtained through the CBE process will be accepted as meeting the requirement. PARTNERSHIP-First Calgary Financial - Shawnessy Our business partner is First Calgary Financial and we thank them for their donations of time and money to support our school.
