Justified Episode Guide in bed with Boyd. Sheriff Shelby admits Boyd helped him win an election, but his first loyalty is to the law. Raylan is skeptical, to say the least, but recognizes that Shelby is not about to stop chasing Josiah/Drew. Elsewhere, Tim shows up at a medical clinic to meet an old war buddy named Mark, who claims he has been clean for two months. He simply wants Tim help (i.e. protection) while paying back some debts from his ”user days.” As the pair talks, Colt enters. Tim says hello. ”I know those eyes,” Mark says of Colt. ”That guy’s in a world of hurt.” Colt enters the bathroom and holds a gun to a man taking a leak, demanding to be put in contact with the nearest heroin dealer. The peeing man, terrified, agrees. Sheriff Shelby, meanwhile, enters Boyd’s office inside Johnny’s bar and arrests the criminal. ”You are turning a corner you can’t walk back around,” Boyd warns. Sheriff Shelby doesn’t seem to care. Elsewhere, Colt goes to Audrey’s looking for drugs and, while he’s there, Ellen May. He smacks one of the prostitutes, Terri, and demands information, but the girl has nothing to say. Colt then grabs her by the hair. ”You tell anyone about this, I will cut out your tongue,” Colt warns. At the sheriff’s office, Shelby and Raylan ask Boyd if he had anything to do with cutting off Josiah’s foot. Boyd denies any involvement and, again, makes a barely concealed threat against Shelby for his insolence. Shelby brings up Ellen May – and how the girl hasn’t been seen in some time. The message is clear: talk about Josiah, or the group will be forced to talk about Ellen May. Before Boyd has to choose, Sonya, who is also Arlo’s lawyer, enters. ”If she’s not under arrest, we’re leaving,” she says. Johnny notices that Terri is beaten up and demands to know who did it. She lies – to protect her tongue, no doubt – saying it was Max, one of her regular customers. Elsewhere, Josiah lies down in a dingy garage with a belt wrapped around his recently shortened leg. He is still bleeding badly and the two men watching him – the ones who did the deed – are worried that he might not make it. Suddenly, Sonya enters. She has a flair for the dramatic, it seems. Turns out she hired the two goons to kidnap Josiah. They cut off his foot because his electronic monitor anklet would’ve brought the cops. One of the goons suggests cauterizing Josiah’s gaping wound with a blowtorch. Sonya reluctantly agrees. Ava, in the meantime, visits Judge Arnold at his home – under the guise of catching up with his wife, an old high-school classmate – to get an invitation to a swingers’ party being held in town. Ava and Boyd don’t want to swing, they want to be in the same house with a whole bunch of Harlan’s elite who might be Drew. Speaking of folks who might be Drew, Josiah is about to get a blowtorch to his stump when Raylan and Sheriff Shelby burst through the garage door. They arrest the two goons and Sonya. Josiah then explains that he tried to kill Raylan because he wanted to find Drew Thompson for himself. Arlo told Sonya that Josiah was Drew, but that was just another in a long line of untruths from Raylan’s papa. Sheriff Shelby asks how Josiah planned to find Drew. The old man explains that he knows a lawman who might know – and that lawman is Hunter, who is currently in jail for also having unsuccessfully tried to kill Raylan. Tim and Mark then head to a local dealer’s apartment to pay the debt. The dealer demands twice the owed cash – and pulls a gun. Tim pulls his gun and points it at the dealer’s head. He then negotiates a deal: Mark pays double, but he has a few more weeks to scrounge up the cash. Elsewhere, Johnny and Colt pay a visit to Max. They proceed to beat the tar out of Max, who denies hitting Terri. Colt goes overboard, of course, trying to keep the man silent – forever. ”Check his pulse!” Johnny yells. Responds Colt: ”Check it yourself.” Colt stalks out of the apartment. At Johnny’s bar, Ava confesses to Boyd that she can’t hardly sleep for guilt over Ellen May’s death. She says she loves Boyd, but has to know where their relationship and their business are headed. In answer, Boyd shows Ava a box full of money that he has been stashing for months. ”It’s a down payment on a house, Ava,” he explains. ”This is why we’re doing the things we’re doing. It’s for the future. In three generations time, we’ll be an old family name. Nobody will think twice about their kid playing with a Crowder kid after school.” Boyd then proposes to Ava. She tearfully accepts. 136

Six days earlier — Out on the interstate, Raylan turns wanted multiple murderer Jody Adair over to his old onenight stand, Knoxville bail bondswoman Sharon Edmunds for a little extra cash. Jody overhears Raylan tell her where he’s currently living, above the High Note Bar. Sharon thanks him and drives off with her partner Mitch in the passenger seat and the captured fugitive in the back of her van. Some miles down a back road, the van blows a rear tire. Sharon takes the opportunity to go into the woods to relieve herself. Almost immediately, Kenneth Blanks claiming to be a ”good Samaritan” pulls up and asks if the bail enforcers need help. Mitch warns him off and then opens the back door to check on Jody, who jumps Mitch and strangles him with cuffed hands. Kenneth, who Jody calls ”Kennet,” mildly protests, saying he agreed to blow out the tire, not to be part of any murder. Jody goes into the woods and exchanges shots with Sharon... she hits him with a through-and-through in the shoulder while taking his round in the neck. She goes down holding her wound and dies, gurgling. Jody curses. This is more trouble than he anticipated. At the U.S. Marshals office in the present — Art expresses his doubts about the quality of the investigative work done by Raylan so far to find Drew Thompson, and mentions that he hasn’t seen FBI Special Agent Barkley for several days. He suggests maybe seeing psychic (Thompson’s ”widow”) and, more practically, having a long conversation with Arlo. That’s the very last thing Raylan wants to do, so Art suggests that he still go to Tramble but start with incarcerated former sheriff Hunter Mosley... then see Arlo. As he leaves the office, Raylan wishes a surprised fellow deputy marshal Nelson Dunlop a happy birthday, which delights Tim Gutterson. 137
