5 The <strong>Health</strong> Programme<br />
5.1. Overall Objective<br />
<strong>ICEIDA</strong> will jo<strong>in</strong> GoM and the <strong>Mangochi</strong> DHO <strong>in</strong> their efforts to improve the quality of life of the<br />
people of <strong>Mangochi</strong> by reduc<strong>in</strong>g the risk of ill health and occurrence of premature deaths thereby<br />
contribut<strong>in</strong>g to social and economic development. In l<strong>in</strong>e with the MBSP, the overall objective of the<br />
programme is:<br />
To assist the Government of Malawi and the <strong>Mangochi</strong> District Council to improve liv<strong>in</strong>g standards <strong>in</strong><br />
the rural communities <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mangochi</strong> District.<br />
5.2. Immediate Objective (Outcome)<br />
This programme specifically aims to reduce maternal and child mortality <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mangochi</strong> District. The<br />
immediate objective is:<br />
Increased availability, access and utilisation of high impact, quality maternal and child health<br />
services <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mangochi</strong> District.<br />
5.3. Expected Results (Outputs)<br />
1. Improved health services <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />
1.1. General <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>in</strong> the network of the MoH health centres is strengthened<br />
1.1.1. Safe water supply <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> at least 13 HCs (Annex 6. p.2 for proposed sites)<br />
1.1.2. Sanitation (latr<strong>in</strong>es) <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> at least 13 HCs (Annex 6. p.3 for proposed sites<br />
1.1.3. Electricity and power supply <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> at least 19 HCs (Annex 6. p.5 for proposed<br />
sites)<br />
1.1.4. At least 10 placenta pits and 10 <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erators constructed <strong>in</strong> health facilities (Annex 6.<br />
p.4 for proposed sites)<br />
1.1.5. General ma<strong>in</strong>tenance done <strong>in</strong> at least 13 health facilities<br />
1.1.6. Build<strong>in</strong>gs and equipment ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed (ma<strong>in</strong>tenance fund)<br />
1.2. Improved <strong>in</strong>frastructure and equipment <strong>in</strong> maternal and child health services <strong>in</strong> HCs<br />
1.2.1. At least 4 maternity wards constructed <strong>in</strong> rural areas (Annex 7 for proposed sites)<br />
1.2.2. Maternity ward constructed at the <strong>Mangochi</strong> District Hospital<br />
1.2.3. Beds and equipment provided for 6 maternity wards (Annex 7 for proposed sites) (See<br />
section on Input regard<strong>in</strong>g def<strong>in</strong>ition of equipment)<br />
1.2.4. At least 11 Wait<strong>in</strong>g homes constructed (Annex 7 for proposed sites)<br />
1.2.5. At least 10 Staff houses constructed (Annex 7 for proposed sites)<br />
1.2.6. At least 10 <strong>Health</strong> posts constructed and provided with electricity<br />
1.2.7. At least 20 vacc<strong>in</strong>e fridges provided at health posts and other health centres (Annex 7<br />
for proposed sites)<br />
1.2.8. At least 5 health facilities provided with furniture<br />
2. Increased coverage of high impact, quality maternal and child health services<br />
2.1 Improved referral services<br />
2.1.1. At least 5 ambulances purchased and <strong>in</strong> operation with operational guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> place<br />
