TOURISM AND RELATED SERVICES IN BULGARIA LTI, Calimera Aktivhotels Two other Rewe-owned international hotel chains, LTI and Calimera Aktivhotels, also operate in Bulgaria. LTI has lent its brand to Neptun Beach in Sunny Beach, Berlin Green Park Hotel and Berlin Golden Beach Hotel in Golden Sands. Calimera made a comeback to this country last year and now runs the Rodopi Tsvete complex in Sunny Beach, taking over from PrimaSol. Two years ago, Calimera Actvihotels signed a franchising contract for the operation of MG Corp.-owned holiday village Paradise Beach which was later terminated. Cedok Cedok expects the number of Bulgarian summer holidays sold to Czechs to increase by 15-20% in '06, announced Sun Tours, the local partner of the Czech travel company. A total of 15,000 tourists booked vacations at Bulgaria's Black Sea coast through Cedok last year, up 22% over '04. Cedok offers charter flights from Prague, Brno and Ostrava to Bourgas and Varna, on the Black Sea. 5.3. GEOGRAPHIC DATA According to NSI data, 1 306 public and private accommodation establishments – hotels, motels, mountain chalets, camping sites and other establishments for shortterm accommodation with more than 30 bed places - functioned in the country in 2004. The number of rooms in them is 86 thousand and that of the bed places 190 thousand. The number of the accommodation establishments has increased by 247 (23.3%) in comparison with 2003, the greatest share of which are hotels (78%). The main part of the hotels in the country (53.7%) are situated on the coast Black sea and 73.8% of bed places are situated in them. Out of the total number of hotels in the country – 1 016, there are 269 in Varna district, 191 in Burgas district and 86 in Dobrich district. In comparison with the previous year, in 2004 the greatest decrease is that in bed places in the seaside resorts – by 23.5%. The number of bed places in the rest houses in the balneological resorts decrease by 1% and in mountain resorts increase by 5.2%. In 2004 the distribution of the bed places by type of resorts is the following: 14 406 (67.6%) of all the bed places are in seaside resorts, 5 696 (26.7%) in mountain resorts and 1 219 (5.7%) in balneological resorts. In 2005, hectic construction in the big Bulgarian resorts continued. In practice, in some areas of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast the material assets were doubled. Currently, Bulgaria has over 190,000 beds in more than 1,300 sites (source: Centre for Economic Development). Winter resorts continued to develop very dynamically, especially the town of Bansko in Pirin Mountain where investment in specialised infrastructure in recent months only exceeded EUR 50 mln. Now Bansko has over 6,200 beds, mostly in 2- and 3- star hotels. In 2005, the first 5-star hotel opened there. The town has ten 4-star hotels. There are also many family hotels and lodgings. The resort makes efforts to attract bigger popularity internationally. Bansko is being portrayed as one of the most dynamically developing winter resorts in Europe, able to compete with ski resorts in Austria and Italy. The ski runs in Bansko are four, with a total length of 65 km, protective nets, opportunity for night skiing, etc. There are plans to construct a second cabin lift. The realisation of the project to modernise the Borovets resort was scheduled to start in January 2006. The project’s total value is BGN 300 mln. Currently, Borovets has around 6,000 beds in 40 categorised hotels and villas. The total carrying capacity of the ski devices is around 10 000 people per hour. Considerable investment is going into Pamporovo resort, too. Persenk Hotel is being modernised. The focus is on the Spanish Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in Sofia 67
