La Vie Paroissale
Connétable John Refault
“ The Deputy’s view
There are many issues that bother parishioners, none more than
speeding. You will have read the article from Bart Messervy Evans
about the area at Les Chenolles and of course there are other
areas of the Parish where we have particular concerns about
speeding and road safety.
Initial discussions with TTS have been positive and I hope that we will be able to
work out some solutions over the next year. With the advent of the new bus contract,
hopefully more people will be enticed out of their cars by a better bus network, which
will have a positive impact on our roads.
A number of other issues have taken me to the Health, Housing, Social Security and
TTS departments to present particular cases on behalf of parishioners. Progress is
being made on those fronts.
Ever mindful that three years will pass very quickly, I am working with the Youth Club
to find a new facility for our young people and I hope to establish a Parish working
party soon.
In the nearer future, it will be with great pride that we welcome Sir John and Lady
McColl to officially open the Life Long Homes at Clos le Ruez. It has been wonderful
to see people move in and make their homes there. This should be another fun
community event, of which there have been so many this year.
From the Connétable’s desk
We have seen the wettest June on record this year but for the first
time, St Peter's Battle of Flowers Association is working in a dry and
well lit environment.
Our new Parish shed is fully operational with low energy lighting donated by a generous
parishioner, and a bore hole, to be shared with the Community Centre, to reduce their
water costs. This also enables the Parish to house its vehicles and general equipment
within a dry and weatherproof building during the winter months.
In the Parish Office, the Parish Secretary, Procurers and I have been working late into the
evening and at weekends to contain Parish spending, we aim to deliver no increase in the
Parish element of the rates for the fourth year running - a difficult task given the annual
price increases and demands on the budget, but not impossible.
However, the Island-wide rate, (the part of the rates that are required to be paid to the
States Treasury for Income Support) will be increasing by 0.02 pence per quarter for
residential properties and 0.04 pence per quarter for commercial properties - the
Island-wide rate represents almost a half of the rates collected by our Parish.
On the Island scene, there are the important matters of the Health and Social Services
White Paper that will identify the path taken for our future provision of health services.
Equally, Housing also has a White Paper consultation going on. I urge you to comment on
these important policy changes. Overarching these, is the consultation on the Reform of
the States Chamber. This is seeking your views on the composition of the States.
Finally, work will start soon to complete the refurbishment of our Parish Church, as the
tower and steeple are re-pointed, the internal steel work replaced and the large bell
restored. This is the final phase of the re-roofing and steeple project, which should keep
our church in good order for many years to come.
On the Island scene, there are the important matters of the Health and Social Services White
Paper that will identify the path taken for our future provision of health services.
