Autrefois Opening up the Archives In a new series for Les Clefs, Linda Romeril, Head of Archives and Collections at Jersey Heritage opens the archives to discover more about the history of the Parish’s best-loved landmarks. From the story of St Peter’s Church to how one of the Island’s most well-known shops started life as the Parish’s general store, the archives tell a fascinating story of the history of our Parish. In the first of our features, we focus on places of worship and the Parish Hall. Churches and Parish Hall St Peter’s Church is the oldest building in the village and would have been the centre of the local community with prominent families having their own pews in the Church. A look at the proprietors of the pews in the early 19th century shows the Blampied, Renouf and Le Boutillier families all featured. In the 1880s the Church was repaired, restored and enlarged. Sunday services were held in the Parish Hall whilst the work was taking place and the re-opening of the Church was held in May 1888. The Jersey Evening Times gives the reasons for the restoration as ‘the Church itself has been considerably enlarged, one reason for this being probably found in the fact that it has for several years been the rendezvous for young people of both sexes not only from St Peter’s but also from neighbouring parishes.’ In the 19th century, the rise of Methodism in Jersey led to the establishment of Philadelphie Chapel. The foundation stone for the Chapel was laid in 1825. The Methodist Sunday School began in 1832 with the Church being enlarged and an organ installed in the second half of the 19th century. The Parish Hall stands opposite St Peter’s Church, and the building is identified as such on the Godfray Map of 1849. A postcard of the area with an image taken in the 20th century shows the date 1841 on the exterior of the building. Interestingly, despite the Parish Hall being in situ in the 1840s, the Acts of the Parish Assembly show that meetings of the Constable and his Officers often still took place in the local taverns. The Assembly was responsible for the care of the poor within the Parish. They visited the poor on an annual basis making decisions as to which families should receive money, clothing, bread or meat. They occasionally assisted the poor of the Parish with passage from Jersey, an example being Mr Beaucousin who was given money to travel to Newfoundland in 1862 providing that the ticket did not cost more than £5. The Acts of the Parish Assembly indicate that the Parish had its own poor house, which, in 1855 was described as being in a ‘bad state’. The Assembly considered a proposition from George Philippe Slous to change the site of the poor house. Slous proposed that a new poor house should be built next to his property. Les Jeunes What we have been up to @ St Peters Youth Club The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee On Saturday 2nd June, I went to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Party at St Peter’s Community Centre. It was a great laugh and it was lovely to see the whole community get together and have lots of fun! I had a go on the bouncy castle with my friends, which was really funny. Then after that I went on the Body Zorbs, which are massive balls that you can run around crashing into other people and you can’t get hurt. These were my favourite! You could then go down to the car park were they had long tables set out to have some lunch on. The food was lovely and was provided by the Village Tea Room! After lunch we went back onto the village green and took part in the egg and spoon race and the three-legged races. I had great fun at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Party at the Community Centre and I would like to thank everyone that was there for making it a great day and making it loads of fun. Learning about Alcohol A few weeks ago at St Peter’s Youth Club I took part in an alcohol course. We learnt how many units of alcohol were in each drink and we were told to pour how much we thought a single measure of each drink was. Surprisingly, one unit was a lot less than I thought! We also got to have a go with the beer goggles to see what our vision would be like if we had drunk to much alcohol! I enjoyed doing this course and it has taught me not to go silly on drinking too much! Bus Project St Peter’s Youth Club has had a great term on the Bus. Some of the highlights from this term have been a quiz night where we had to answer questions about general knowledge - I really enjoyed this because I got to have a laugh and work alongside all my friends. We also had a movie night were we watched the film “Up” in the back room on the Bus and were given popcorn and sweets! Which we all really enjoyed! The Bus has purchased a new game called “swing ball” which is really popular and really well used. We have also been making cakes, which were very yummy! I have really enjoyed this term on the Bus and I hope for many more amazing terms to come. Notice from The Bus Team – The Bus Project has an open door policy therefore young people accessing the Bus Project are allowed to come and go as they please. Please bear this in mind if your child attends any of the Bus sessions. Crabbé for Year 7 and 8s On the 25th, 26th and 27th of May, St Peter’s Youth Club took us to Crabbé for the weekend. It was great fun! We arrived at Crabbé on the Friday evening and went through the Crabbé rules and boundaries. Once this had been done we took part in the first activity, the blind folded rope trail which was scary and exciting! On the Saturday we visited Les Mielles Activity Centre and went on the segways, which was my favourite bit. We also had a go at the clay pigeon shooting and bungee trampoline.
