Österreich im Rampenlicht!
Vom 7. bis 9. Februar 2014 ist Österreich, vertreten
durch die Münze Österreich AG, offizieller
Ehrengast der 43. World Money Fair in Berlin. Diese
Ehre fällt der österreichischen Staatsprägeanstalt
nach 1991, dem Mozartjahr, bereits zum
zweiten Mal zu.
Münzen und Kultur aus der Republik Österreich
stehen auch 2014 an der World Money Fair in
Berlin im besonderen Rampenlicht. Anlass hierzu
geben die beiden Jubiläen: 25 Jahre seit der Überführung
des ehemaligen Hauptmünzamtes in die
Münze Österreich Aktiengesellschaft und 25 Jahre
seit der Einführung des „Philharmonikers“, der
weltweit erfolgreichen Anlagemünze in Gold.
Die Münze Österreich AG gehört heute zu den renommiertesten
Prägeanstalten der Welt. Sie ist
aktiv an der Gestaltung des weltweiten Münzenmarktes
beteiligt und ihre Produkte und Dienstleistungen
erfüllen die hohen Ansprüche der
Sammler in der ganzen Welt.
Österreich blickt auf 1000 Jahre Münzgeschichte

Austria in the Limelight
At the 43 rd World Money Fair, from February
7 th to 9 th , 2014, Austria will be the official Guest of
Honor, represented by the Austrian Mint. The
Austrian Mint is awarded this honor for the
second time after the Mozart Year in 1991.
In 2014, coins and culture coming from the
Republic of Austria will again be in the limelight
at the World Money Fair. Two anniversaries
provide the occasion: 25 years ago the Austrian
Hauptmünzamt became the Austrian Mint AG
and 25 years ago the Mint first released the
Vienna Philharmonic, its worldwide successful
gold bullion coin.
The Austrian Mint today is one of the leading
mints in the world. The Mint is a global player in
the coin market, its products and services
meeting highest expectations of collectors
around the world.
Austria looks back on a numismatic history of
1000 years. The country‘s rich cultural heritage is
documented in splendid commemorative coins.
The Austrian Mint continues to write this history
by issuing exquisite coins marking cultural,
economical and sports events of Austrian history,
as well as other historical achievements.

Der World Money Fair Award gilt weltweit als
eine der wichtigsten numismatischen Auszeichnungen.
2013 wurde Dr. Hubert Lanz für sein
Lebenswerk im Dienste der Numismatik ausgezeichnet.
Bei der traditionellen Preisvergabe im Rahmen
des alljährlichen Gala-Dinners der World Money
Fair fand Albert M. Beck, Ehrenpräsident der
weltweit größten Münzenmesse, viele persönliche
Lobesworte für den Preisträger Dr. Hubert
Lanz. Er verkörpere, so Beck, „einen bedingungslosen
Einsatz für die Belange der Numismatik.
Gleichzeitig hat er uns alle immer wieder
mit seiner wunderbaren Art, fachliche Debatten
zu führen, beeindruckt – stets konsequent, oft
auch streitbar und immer absolut ehrlich.“
Der aus einer renommierten Grazer Numismatiker-Familie
stammende Hubert Lanz promovierte
1977 im Fachgebiet Maschinenbau. Doch statt
sich den Finessen moderner Verbrennungsmotoren
zu widmen, übernahm er noch im gleichen

The World Money Fair Award is one of the most
important distinctions in numismatics. In 2013,
Dr. Hubert Lanz received the award in recognition
of his lifetime achievements at the service of
numismatics.
When the traditional prize-giving ceremony was
held, at the yearly World Money Fair gala dinner,
Albert M. Beck, Honorary President of the world‘s
largest coin fair, found a personal way to praise
the merits of the awardee, Hubert Lanz, saying
that ’he stands for an unconditional commitment
for the concerns of numismatics. Also, he has
impressed us time and again with his wonderful
way of participating in discussions among
experts – always logical, often polemic and, as a
matter of principle, absolutely sincere.‘
Coming from a family of renowned numismatists,
from the Austrian city of Graz, Hubert Lanz took
a doctoral degree in engineering in 1977. But
instead of dedicating his life to the details of
modern combustion engines he took over Gitta

Jahr das Auktionshaus Gitta Kastner in München
und baute dessen Versteigerungsgeschäft kontinuierlich
aus. Inzwischen werden neben einem
äußerst erfolgreichen Onlinegeschäft pro Jahr bis
zu 115 Münzauktionen organisiert, die in der Branche
immer für besondere Aufmerksamkeit sorgen.
Wie kaum ein anderer hat Dr. Hubert Lanz das
moderne Münzensammeln und die klassische
Numismatik zu verbinden gewusst – auch und
in einem besonderen Maße als Präsident der
Föderation Europäischer Münzenfachhändlerverbände
(FENAP).
Kastner‘s auction house in Munich that same

auction business. Meanwhile, apart from an
extremely successful online store, the company
organizes up to 115 coin auctions per year which
have been attracting the special attention of
collectors for a long time.
Like few others, Hubert Lanz has managed to unite
modern coin collecting and classical numismatics
– not only but in particular as president of FENAP,
the Federation of European Numismatic Trade
Associations.

Noch einmal darf ich Sie als Präsident der Mint
Directors Conference zur World Money Fair 2014
begrüßen, bevor ich im Mai an meine Kollegen
von der Casa de Moneda de México übergebe. Für
die Münze Österreich AG ist die World Money Fair
2014 ein besonderes Ereignis, dürfen wir uns doch
anlässlich unseres 820. bzw. unseres 25. Geburtstages
als Ehrengast dieses wichtigen Zusammentreffens
der gesamten Münzwelt präsentieren.
1194 wurde die Münze Österreich gegründet,
1989 in eine Aktiengesellschaft umgewandelt
und 2014 feiert auch unser wohl bekanntestes
Produkt, der Wiener Philharmoniker, sein 25-jähriges
Jubiläum.
Die Entscheidung unsere Goldbullionmünze der
einzigen Sprache, die wir weltweit verstehen –
der Musik – zu widmen, war eine gute Entscheidung.
Musik geht direkt ins Herz, Musik verbindet
uns über die Grenzen hinweg und daher freut
es mich, dass der Wiener Philharmoniker international
so gut aufgenommen wird. Von der ersten
Prägung an zeigt die Münze auf der einen Seite
Instrumente des berühmten Wiener Orchesters,
namentlich Wiener Horn, Fagott, Harfe, vier Geigen
und mittig ein Cello. Auf der anderen Seite ist
die – etwa vom Neujahrskonzert bekannte –
Orgel im Goldenen Saal des Wiener Musikvereins
zu sehen.
As president of the Mint Directors’ Conference, it
is once again with great pleasure that I welcome
you to the World Money Fair 2014, before I pass
on my duties to our colleagues from the Casa de
Moneda de México in May. This is a very special
event for the Austrian Mint, not only because it
is the Guest of Honour but also because it
celebrates both its 820th and 25th anniversaries
in 2014: the Austrian Mint was founded in 1194
and it became an incorporated company in 1989.
The latter was also the year that the Austrian
Mint launched its flagship brand, the Vienna
Philharmonic bullion coin. The decision made a
quarter of a century ago to use music, the only
language that everybody really understands, as
the theme for the coin has proved to be an
excellent one. Music tugs at your heartstrings
and has the magical ability to unite people in
spite of the borders that separate them. This is a
phenomenon symbolised by the harmonious
assortment of musical instruments, including a
Viennese horn, a bassoon, a harp, four violins and
a cello, that forms the central design of the
Vienna Philharmonic coin.
Music is an integral component of Austria’s
cultural identity. Although the heyday of the
great composers – from Mozart to Mahler – has
now passed, Vienna is still a Mecca for classical
Musik genießt in Österreich seit jeher einen überaus
hohen Stellwert. Auch wenn die Zeit der großen
Komponisten von Mozart bis Mahler der
Vergangenheit angehört, ist Wien immer noch
ein Mekka der klassischen Musik und Musikliebhaber
aus der ganzen Welt pilgern nach Wien.
Was Wien für die klassische Musik darstellt, ist
die World Money Fair für Münzliebhaber, Münzhändler
und Prägestätten. Die World Money Fair
zu besuchen, heißt Teil dieser lebendigen internationalen
Gemeinschaft von Enthusiasten zu sein,
die für einige Tage Informationen und Ideen austauschen,
um Sammler und solche, die es werden
sollen, mit den bestmöglichen Produkten zu
begeistern.
Die Namensvetter unseres Markenzeichens, die
Wiener Philharmoniker, wurden durch ihren besonderen
Klang weltberühmt. Das Orchester hat
es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, die nach wie vor
aktuelle humanitäre Botschaft der Musik zu verbreiten.
Diese Haltung drückt auch ihr Motto aus,
das schon der legendäre Ludwig van Beethoven
seiner Missa Solemnis voranstellte: „Von Herzen
– möge es wieder zu Herzen gehen.“ Dass es uns
gelingt, diese Philosophie zu leben und wir einen
Diskurs führen, der in Produkten mündet, die imstande
sind Menschen zu berühren, wünsche ich
der World Money Fair 2014.

four corners of the globe. As the world’s leading
coin show, the World Money Fair is to coins what
Vienna is to classical music. To participate in the
World Money Fair is to feel part of a vibrant
international community of enthusiasts who
exchange information and ideas in order to help
them create the best possible products for their
respective markets.
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, from which
our most famous product takes its name, is
renowned the world over for its unique sound. To
help them create that sound, the members of the
orchestra strive to implement the motto that the
legendary Ludwig van Beethoven, whose
symphonies had a direct influence on the creation
of the orchestra, used to preface his famous
mass, Missa solemnis – “From the heart, to the
heart”. By embracing this philosophy and
instilling our products with emotions to which
people can really relate, we will no doubt
continue to make products that our customers
will continue cherish.

Willkommen zum Abenteuer Olympiamünzen!
Schon seit über 60 Jahren sind die Olympiamünzen
internationale Botschafter der Olympischen
Bewegung, in denen sich Sport, Kunst und Kultur
vereinen. Außerdem tragen die Einnahmen aus
ihrem Verkauf zur Veranstaltung der Olympischen
Spiele bei und unterstützen damit die
olympische Idee.
Das Abenteuer Olympiamünzen begann im Jahr
1951, als Finnland erstmals eine Münze zu den
Olympischen Spielen prägen ließ. Dies war auch
als Beitrag zur Finanzierung der Sommerspiele
von Helsinki 1952 gedacht. Es war die erste Olympiamünze
in der Geschichte der modernen Olympischen
Spiele. Seither haben die offiziellen
Olympia münzen mit ihrem künstlerischen Anspruch
fast alle Olympischen Spiele begleitet und
bereichert.
Die Olympiamünzen feiern ein bedeutendes Ereignis
in der Geschichte einer Stadt bzw. eines Landes.
Außerdem drückt sich in ihnen der Stolz auf
die Kunst und Kultur eines Landes ebenso aus wie
die Unterstützung der olympischen Idee. Sowohl
für Münzenliebhaber als auch für ein breiteres
Publikum sind sie heiß begehrte Sammlerstücke.
Unter den Schätzen des Olympischen Museums in
Lausanne ist eine Sammlung von über 700 Olympiamünzen
aus aller Herren Länder. Hier gewinnt
man einen Eindruck von dem bewundernswerten
Können der Graveure und Handwerker, die diese
Miniaturkunstwerke geschaffen haben. Doch in

For more than 60 years, Olympic Coins have been
international ambassadors for the Olympic
Movement, uniting the worlds of sport, art and
culture. They have also provided a source of
revenue to support the conduct of the Olympic
Games and, through the Olympic Games, the
Olympic ideal.
The adventure of Olympic coin collecting started
in 1951, when Finland issued an official Olympic
coin, partially to finance the 1952 Helsinki Olympic
Games. This was the first Olympic coin in the
history of the modern Olympics. Since then almost
every Olympic Games has been enhanced with the
artistic richness of official Olympic coins.
Olympic coins not only mark a significant event in
the history of a city and a nation, but also express
the nation’s pride in its art and culture and support
for the Olympic ideal; precious metals representing
a precious ideal. For coin enthusiasts, and the
general public alike, they are highly cherished
collectors items.
One of the jewels of the Olympic Museum in
Lausanne is its collection of more than 700
Olympic coins from nations around the world.
Here, one can not only admire the skill of the
designers and the craftsmen who created these
miniature works of art, but also study the history
of the modern Olympic Games as revealed by the
coins.

(Olympische Kommission für Philatelie,
Numismatik und Memorabilien) und die
World Money Fair haben sich von Beginn an für
die Sammler von Olympiamünzen eingesetzt.
Vom 7. bis 9. Februar 2014 findet in Berlin die 43.
World Money Fair statt. Der offizielle Ehrengast
der Veranstaltung ist Österreich, weltberühmt für
den Wintersport und seine Kultur.
Ich bin sicher, dass die neuen Gedenkmünzen, die
anlässlich der bevorstehenden Olympischen
Spiele von SOTCHI 2014 und RIO 2016 erscheinen,
die Erfolgsgeschichte der Olympiamünzen fortschreiben
werden.
Im Namen des Internationalen Olympischen Komitees
lade ich alle Münzenfreunde und Besucher
der World Money Fair 2014 ein am olympischen
Geist teilzuhaben und das Sammeln der offiziellen
Olympiamünzen als Abenteuer zu erleben.

Since the foundation of an Olympic Collectors’
Commission in 1993 by the IOC president J. A.
Samaranch all official Olympic coin programs
were launched at the prestigious World Money
Fair. The Olympic Collectors’ Commission (The
Olympic Philately, Numismatic and Memorabilia
Commission) and World Money Fair have been
supporting Olympic collectors since the very
beginning.
From February 7 th to 9 th 2014 Berlin will host the 43.
World Money Fair. Austria, the famous country of
culture and winter sport will be Official Guest of
Honour .
I am confident that new commemorative coins for
the forthcoming Olympic Games in SOCHI 2014
and RIO 2016 will continue the worldwide success
story of Olympic coins.
On behalf of the International Olympic Committee,
I encourage all visitors and collectors at World
Money Fair Berlin 2014 to share in the Olympic

The largest coin fair worldwide unites all aspects
of numismatics in Berlin. This event builds bridges
across all periods of minting from antiquity to the
future. Countless dealers and collectors from all
over the world, mint directors from the most
important issuing countries, producers, machine
manufacturers and public institutions – in Berlin
they find a platform which is unique in the world
of coins. The fair schedule is packed with framing
events, presentations, conferences, and above
all, with meetings and conversations.
Especially in these modern times, with so many
new ways of communicating, one looks forward,

combines the leading trade and industry show
and a numismatic event for a wider public.
Hotel Estrel will be buzzing with activity during
the three days of the fair, with the talk being all
about coins.
Der erste Messetag ist traditionell der Erstausgabetag
der deutschen 2 € Sondermünze. Im
Rahmen dieser Messe wird diese Münze im Bundeskanzleramt
feierlich vorgestellt.
Von unseren inzwischen mehr als 230 Mitgliedern
nimmt die Mehrheit entweder als Aussteller
oder als Fachbesucher an der World Money Fair
teil. Der Berufsverband des deutschen Münzenfachhandels
e.V. unterhält wieder einen großen
Informationsstand mit unverbindlicher Begutachtung
und Schätzung von Münzen, einem Glücksrad,
Münztauschaktion sowie weiteren Events.
Als größter Fachverband in Europa sind wir auch
in die Organisation der Messe eingebunden und
stehen Ihnen jederzeit mit Rat und Tat zur Seite.

Traditionally, the new German € 2 commemorative
coin is issued on the first day of the
World Money Fair. The ceremonial presentation
of the coin is held at the Federal Chancellery.
Most of the meanwhile over 230 members of our
association take part in the fair, either as an
exhibitor or as a visitor. The Berufsverband will
again have a large information stand where
we will offer noncommittal assessment and
valuation of coins, a wheel of fortune, a coin
swap promotion and other events.
As the largest professional association in Europe
we are also involved with the organization of
the fair and will be pleased to provide general
assistance and information at any time.
We are confident that the event will again be a
complete success this year!

alle Aussteller und Besucher der World
Money Fair 2014 sehr herzlich begrüßen.
Die World Money Fair hat sich durch ihre Größe
und die vielen internationalen Aussteller als die
größte Messe der Münzenbranche etabliert. Die
Kombination aus vielen alt eingesessenen Firmen
und Münzprägestätten aus aller Welt, aber auch
all die Einzelhändler macht die World Money Fair
einzigartig. Hier treffen sich die frühesten Münzprägungen
der Antike mit den noch nicht realisierten
Prägevorhaben der Münzstätten. Über
2.500 Jahre Münzprägung aus aller Welt werden
hier anschaulich gemacht.
Der 1950 gegründete Verband der deutschen
Münzenhändler ist auch in diesem Jahr auf der
Messe mit einem Informationsstand vertreten.
Hier liegen Auktionskataloge und Lagerlisten unserer
Mitglieder für Sie aus. Gerne stehen sowohl
ich selbst oder mein Stellvertreter, als auch der
Leiter unserer Geschäftsstelle, Herr Caspar, für

On behalf of the ‚Verband der deutschen
Münzenhändler‘, as its new president, I extend a
sincere welcome to exhibitors and visitors of the
World Money Fair 2014.
Through its size and the wide range of
international exhibitors, the World Money Fair
has established itself as the largest trade fair of
the coin business. The combination of numerous
long-established companies and mints from all
over the world, and also the variety of coin
dealers, makes the World Money Fair unique.
Here, the earliest coins minted in antiquity are
presented next to the coin projects modern mints
are planning to realize in the future. Thus, over
2,500 years of coin making come alive.
Like in previous years, the ‚Verband der deutschen
Münzenhändler‘, founded in 1950, has a booth at
the Fair where we provide stock lists of our
member companies and auction catalogs for
viewing. During the Fair, our vice-president and I,
as well as our office manager Mr. Caspar, will be
available for personal discussions.

Berlin als Zentrum der Numismatik und des Geldes
in seiner schönsten Form hat eine inzwischen
schon lange Tradition. Die World Money Fair 2014
ist daher auch in diesem Jahr Tagungsort der
FENAP und wir möchten uns bei den Gastgebern
herzlich bedanken.
Im Vorjahr hieß es noch, dass die Abschaffung
des ermäßigten Steuersatzes im größten Sammlerland
der EU für kulturelle Güter und Sammlungsstücke
zum 1.1.2013 kommen wird, jetzt soll
es am 1.1.2014 so weit sein. Dieses Thema hat uns
natürlich während des vergangenen Jahres intensiv
beschäftigt.
Ursprünglich begann das Jahr mit einem bedeutsamen
Erfolg zu Gunsten der Sammler in der
ganzen Welt beim Deutschen Bundesfinanzhof,
der klarstellte, dass antike und alte Münzen keine
Ausfuhrgenehmigungen benötigen und nicht
als archäologische Gegenstände anzusehen sind.
Indirekt sollte dieses Urteil auf ganz Europa ausstrahlen
und hat auch in den USA schon Anerkennung
gefunden.
Trotzdem sind die Probleme mit dem überzogenen
Kulturgüterschutz nicht ausgeräumt und
ausgerechnet von der deutschen Regierung geht
eine Initiative aus, die einschneidende Verschärfungen
für Sammler von kulturellen Gütern von
Seiten der EU bringen sollen. Wir als FENAP werden
natürlich weiter versuchen bei den Behörden
Berlin meanwhile enjoys a long tradition as a
center of numismatics and money in its most
beautiful form. Therefore, FENAP this year again
uses the occasion to hold its annual meeting at
the World Money Fair 2014 and we would like to
offer sincere thanks to our hosts.
About a year ago it looked as if Europe‘s largest
collector country would abolish the reduced
tax rate on cultural goods and collectibles by
2013/1/1. Now this new regulation takes effect
from 2014/1/1. As a matter of course, we were
particularly concerned with this issue over the
past year.
Originally, the year had started out well with
an important success for collectors all over the
world. The Federal Financial Agency of Germany
ruled that antique and old coins shall not require
an exportation permit and are not considered to
be archeological objects. In an indirect manner,
this decision is bound to have an effect on the
whole of Europe. It has in fact been positively
acknowledged in the United States.
But for all that, the problems with the exaggerated
protection of cultural goods are not
yet solved. Of all countries in Europe, the German
government started an initiative destined to
bring about stricter regulations for the collectors
of cultural goods on a European level. As FENAP
we will continue lobbying with politicians and
und Politikern unseren noch liberalen Markt zu
erhalten und zu erklären, dass das Sammeln eine
wichtige und kulturell wertvolle Beschäftigung
ist, die gefördert und nicht behindert werden
sollte.
Insgesamt meine ich aber, dass der gesunde
Menschenverstand sich irgendwann wieder einmal
durchsetzen wird und die Sammler sich auch
von vorübergehenden Schwierigkeiten nicht einschüchtern
lassen werden, ihrem Hobby nachzugehen.
Ich wünsche demnach dieser großartigen Veranstaltung,
der World Money Fair 2014 hier in Berlin
einen weiteren durchschlagenden Erfolg.

of explaining that collecting is an important,
culturally valuable activity which should be
encouraged instead of hindered.
All in all, I believe that common sense will
eventually prevail again, and that collectors will
not be too intimidated by temporary drawbacks
to follow their hobby.

World Money Fair 2014, will be another resounding

gilt der Herstellung von Münzen, die das Interesse
von Sammlern auf der ganzen Welt wecken sollen.
Auch 2014 ist ein Teil ihrer Neuausgaben besonderen
Ereignissen und Jahrestagen gewidmet. Motive
und Gestaltung der Münzen, die verwendeten
Metalle und Herstellungsverfahren, Verpackung
und Marketing – all diese Faktoren, mit Bedacht
kombiniert, tragen dazu bei Ergebnisse zu erzielen,
mit denen Sammler, Prägestätten und die
vielen anderen am Münzenmarkt Beteiligten
vollauf zufrieden sein können. Das MDC Marketing
Committee beschäftigt sich mit diesen
und anderen Themen, die bei der Schaffung von
attraktiven, zeitgemäßen Münzprogrammen von
Bedeutung sind.
Im Namen der Mitglieder des Komitees der Mint
Directors Conference heiße ich alle Teilnehmer der
World Money Fair 2014 ganz herzlich willkommen.
Ich hoffe, dass diese Veranstaltung, unabhängig
davon welche Rolle jeder Einzelne dabei spielt, uns
alle erneut bestärkt in unserer Leidenschaft für
eines der ältesten und angesehensten Zahlungsmittel
der Welt – Münzen.
Aktuell bereitet das Komitee die nächste Mint
Directors Conference vor, die im Mai 2014 in Mexiko
City stattfindet. Die Tagung wartet mit einem
kompakten Programm und interessanten Referenten
auf. Wir freuen uns schon jetzt auf anregende
Diskussionen und neue, inspirierende Ideen.
In 2014 special occasions and notable anniversaries
will be part of the new issues by global
mints, which strive to create coins that will spark
the interest of collectors the world over. The
themes, the designs, the metals and production
techniques employed, the packaging and
marketing – just some of the factors that are
always important elements, when carefully
combined, to generate truly satisfying results
for collectors, the issuing mints and the many
other stakeholders in the minting business.
The MDC Marketing Committee continues to
address these and other important issues with
the view to producing desirable modern coin
programs.
On behalf of the members of the MDC
Committee I would like to join in extending a
sincere welcome to all participants in the 2014
edition of the World Money Fair. Regardless of
the role each of us plays, may we all come away
from this event with renewed enthusiasm for
one of the world’s oldest and most respected
forms of currency, coins.
As we look ahead, Committee preparations are
well in hand for the Mint Directors’ Conference
in Mexico City, May 2014. With this venue, a solid
agenda and an interesting group of speakers we
look forward to productive discussions and the

Die Münze Österreich AG hat 2014 zweimal besonderen
Grund zu feiern. 25 Jahre sind es her seit
der Gründung der Aktiengesellschaft, und vor
25 Jahren gaben die Prägepressen die erste Anlagemünze
„Philharmoniker“ in Gold frei. Gründe
genug, um an der World Money Fair in Berlin
im besonderen Rampenlicht zu stehen. Obwohl
Österreich mit etwas mehr als 8 Mio Einwohnern
nicht zu den bevölkerungsreichsten Staaten Europas
gehört, hat ihre Münzprägestätte, die Münze
Österreich, einen weltweiten hervorragenden
Ruf. Sie spielt seit der Umwandlung des ehemaligen
Hauptmünzamtes in eine Aktiengesellschaft
in der Münzenindustrie und in der Gestaltung des
internationalen Münzenmarktes eine entscheidende
Rolle. Mit ihrer Parade-Anlagemünze, dem
„Philharmoniker“ in Gold und Silber, sowie den

Two Jubilees, One Celebration
In 2014, the Austrian Mint has two special
reasons to celebrate. The Mint was organized as
a corporation 25 years ago, and its minting
presses first released the gold bullion coin
‘Vienna Philharmonic’ 25 years ago. Reasons
enough to be in the limelight and enjoy special
attention at the World Money Fair in Berlin.
Although Austria, with a population of just over
8 million, is not among the most populous
countries in Europe, its state mint – the Austrian
Mint – enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide.
Ever since the former Hauptmünzamt was
converted into a corporation (AG), the Mint has
become a global player in the coin-making
industry and the numismatic market. With its
show piece, the Philharmonic gold and silver
bullion coin, and its exquisite commemorative
coin series, the Mint can count on golden and
silver ambassadors advertising the cultural
assets of Austria all over the world.

Der Babenberger Herzog Leopold und der englische
König Richard gerieten Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts
in Streit. Nach mittelalterlicher roher Sitte
nahm Herzog Leopold den englischen König bei
seiner Durchreise in Haft und verlangte für die
Freilassung 15 Tonnen Silber. Richard Löwenherz
zahlte und mit dem Lösegeld in Silber wurden im
Jahre 1194 die ersten Münzen ausgeprägt. Das
war die historisch verbriefte Geburtsstunde der
Münzprägung in Österreich. Erst 200 Jahr später
wird die Wiener Prägestätte urkundlich erwähnt.
The Babenberg Duke Leopold VI and Richard I,
King of England, had a quarrel. The Austrian duke,
displaying the rude manners of the age, captured
the English king who was crossing through his
territory. He asked for a ransom of 15 tons of silver
for releasing him again. Richard the Lionheart
was ransomed and the silver was processed by
the mint, striking its first coins in 1194. There is
historical evidence that coin making started that
year. However, it was only 200 years later that the
Vienna mint was first mentioned in a document.

Eine Münzstätte als Vorbild
Ein Rundgang durch die Betriebsstätte zeigt,
weshalb die Münze Österreich AG zu den führenden
Prägestätten der Welt gehört. Ihre Dienst ­
leistungen decken die gesamte Palette der Münzenherstellung
ab. Sie entdecken die perfekte
Münzstätte. Fast lehrbuchmäßig folgt man
dem Kreislauf, der alle Prozesse der Münzenherstellung
zeigt; angefangen bei der Idee, in der
Designer-Abteilung eine Münze zu gestalten,
über die technischen Fertigungsprozesse bis zur
Verpackung und dem Versand. Es werden nicht
nur Umlaufmünzen, Anlage- und Sammlermünzen
sowie Medaillen für Österreich hergestellt,
sondern auch für zahlreiche andere Länder. Dies
gilt auch für die Münzrondellen in verschiedenen
Metallen und Legierungen und die Werkzeuge,
die für die Herstellung benötigt werden.
Von den gegenwärtig bei der Münze Österreich
AG beschäftigten knapp 228 Personen arbeiten
zurzeit 162 Mitarbeiter in der Produktion.
Innovation und Fortschritt
Die Qualität der österreichischen Prägeprodukte
ist hervorragend. Sie entspricht dem internationalen
Standard. Die Münze Österreich AG ist ISO
A Mint as a Model
During a tour of the production facilities it
becomes clear why the Austrian Mint is among
the leading mints in the world. Its services cover
the whole range of minting. The visitor discovers
the perfect mint: Almost like in a textbook
model one follows the cycle comprising all
processes involved in coin making, from the idea
of creating a coin in the design department via
the technical production processes to packaging
and distribution. Apart from circulation, bullion
and collector coins, and medals for Austria, the
Mint produces for other countries too. Coin
blanks in different metals and alloys, and
minting tools are also exported.
Currently, the Austrian Mint has a staff of 288, of
which 162 work in manufacturing.
Innovation and Progress
Products minted in Austria are of superb quality
and meet international standards. The Austrian
Mint has ISO 9001 certification for producing
coins, medals, precious metal blanks and tools.
The capacity of the 13 Gräbener coin minting
presses is surprisingly high. In a 3-shift system,
5.4 million circulation coins can be minted per

Ausgabephilosophie
Die Münze Österreich AG ist das älteste Industrieunternehmen
Österreichs, eine Gründung der
Babenberger, des damals regierenden Herzogsgeschlechts,
im Jahre 1194. Mit diesem geschichtlichen
Hintergrund und der Aufgabe als Prägestätte
der Republik Österreich auch für die Weitergabe

Issuing Philosophy
The Austrian Mint is Austria’s oldest industrial
company, founded by the Babenberg dukes, the

collector coin editions. At the same time, the
Mint wants to address younger and future
numismatists with history themes.

Bei meinen Besuchen in Münzstätten – es dürften
in den vergangenen 40 Jahren weltweit gegen
120 gewesen sein – halte ich mich mit 33 Jahren
Erfahrung als Lehrer an der Schule für Gestaltung
in Basel jeweils am liebsten und demzufolge am
längsten in den Designer-Abteilungen auf. Für
mich ist die Graveur-Abteilung der Geburtsort einer
Münze, Kreativ-Tempel, Seele und Herzstück
einer Münzstätte zugleich. So auch in Wien.
Die Gedenkmünzen aus Österreich sind bekannt
für allegorisch hervorragende Darstellungen. Die
Umsetzungen der Motive sind besonders sammlerfreundlich.
Ihre Münzgestalter genießen weit
über die Landesgrenzen hinaus einen hervorragenden
Ruf. Zu den Auszeichnungen für Thomas
Pesendorfer ist auch der Vreneli-Preis von 2005,
eine von der Fachzeitschrift MünzenRevue verliehene
Auszeichnung für außerordentliche numismatische
Leistungen zu zählen.
Having been a teacher at the Basel School of
Design for 33 years, what I most enjoy whenever I
visit a mint – and I have been to roughly 120 mints
around the world in the past 40 years – is
spending time in the design department. For me,
the engravers’ workshop is the place where a coin
comes into being, a temple of creation, and both
the heart and soul of a mint. The same is true for
the Vienna mint.
Commemorative coins from Austria are famed
for their beautiful allegorical depictions. The
themes are realized in an especially collectorfriendly
way. The mint’s coin designers have
earned an excellent reputation far beyond the
borders of Austria. Thomas Pesendorfer, among
other distinctions, won the Vreneli prize in 2005,
awarded by MünzenRevue magazine for
outstanding achievements in numismatics.
Currently, the Austrian Mint employs 4 designers
and engravers, among them one woman. All coin
designs are created by this team, with the only
exception of the children contest ‘Bring your

Zurzeit beschäftigt die Münze Österreich 3 Designer
und Graveure sowie eine Graveurin. Die
Motive werden grundsätzlich von diesem Team
gestaltet. Die einzige Ausnahme bildet der Kinderwettbewerb
„Bring Dein Bundesland auf
eine Münze“. Aber auch diese Entwürfe werden
von den eigenen Graveuren „münzmöglich“ gemacht,
d.h. die Farben in den Entwürfen werden
in Oberflächenstrukturen umgesetzt. Die Entwicklung
des konkreten Motivs erfolgt in einem
Wettbewerb der Designer, das Thema wird von
der Marketing-Abteilung entwickelt und von den
Künstlern in vielen Entwürfen umgesetzt. Die
Auswahl erfolgt dann in einer gemeinsamen Sitzung
von Vorstand und Marketing.
25 Jahre „Philharmoniker“
Ich war damals Chefredakteur der MünzenRevue,
Zeitzeuge des erfolgreichen Stapellaufes des goldenen
„Philharmonikers“. Nach der Überführung
des Hauptmünzamtes in eine Aktiengesellschaft
war es die Einführung des „Philharmonikers“, die
in den vergangenen 25 Jahren einen weltweiten
Siegeszug erlebte; eine weitere erfolgreiche Unternehmer-Entscheidung
der Münze Österreich
AG. Der „Philharmoniker“, die auflagenstärkste
europäische Anlagemünze, gibt es in Gold in der
Stückelung von 1/10-Unze bis zu einer Unze sowie
seit 1908 auch in Silber zu einer Unze.

state on a coin’. The winning designs, however,
are made ‘mintable’ by the Mint’s engravers who
translate the colors of the drawings into surface
structures. The concrete motif for a new coin is
developed in a contest of the designers, the
theme is conceived by the marketing department
and the artists produce many designs in the
creative process. Finally the best designs are
chosen in a joint session of board and marketing
department.
25 Years ‘Philharmonic’
Back then, when I witnessed the successful
launch of the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin, I
was editor in chief of MünzenRevue magazine.
Along with conversion of the Hauptmünzamt
into a corporation, the release of the
Philharmonic, which set out to conquer the coin
market, was another fruitful business decision
taken by the Austrian Mint. The Philharmonic, the
European bullion coin with the highest mintage
ever, is available in units from 1/10 ounce to one
ounce of fine gold and since 2008 also in one
ounce of fine silver.

headquarters of the mint at Heumarkt 1 in Vienna.

Wert darauf, bei jeder Neuausgabe von Gedenkmünzen

A Cultural Commitment
Since the founding of the corporation in 1989,
the Austrian Mint has set great store by the
historical, cultural or economic references of
new commemorative coins. Meanwhile the
presentations of Austrian coins have become
legendary and have served as a model for many
other mints.
Zu den kulturellen Verpflichtungen gehören

und Medaillen sensibilisiert werden, und im attraktiven
neuen Münzenshop kann der Besucher
aktuelle Neuheiten direkt kaufen.
Die Münze Österreich AG verfügt gemeinsam
mit dem kunsthistorischen Museum über die
bedeutendste Sammlung österreichischer Prägestempel
und österreichischer Münzen. Die
Sammlung der Prägestempel ist der Öffentlichkeit
seit Herbst 2013 in den Räumen der hierfür
neu gestalteten Räumen der Münze Österreich
AG zugänglich.

Mint‘s museum seek to inspire visitors revealing
the beauty and expressiveness of coins and
medals. New releases are directly available for
sale at the attractive new coin shop.
Together with the Vienna Kunsthistorisches
Museum, the Mint has one of the most important
collections of minting dies and coins from Austria.

Since its foundation over 800 years ago, the
Austrian Mint has consistently combined
traditional craftsmanship, cutting-edge
technology and a tireless quest for innovation

can match. This symbiosis has led to the
creation of a huge variety of uniquely
designed and perfectly minted coins and
medals.
Silver and Niobium
Through the combination of silver and
niobium, the Austrian Mint has achieved an
internationally recognised innovation whose
quality no other mint has so far managed
to equal. Issued in 2014, the first Silver
Niobium coin in two shades of niobium is
called “Evolution”. Its pioneering use of a
two-stage minting procedure to achieve
a two-tone effect was something of a
challenge: more of a revolution than an
evolution.
In combination with the silver outer
ring, the coin’s niobium ‘pill’ creates an
unmistakable aesthetic effect, which makes
for a totally original visual experience that
occurs through light refraction on an
extremely thin, transparent oxide layer.
The coin’s obverse features an image of
the DNA molecule, which symbolises the
origin of Evolution as a whole and in so doing
introduces a truly exciting theme. The coin’s
reverse deals with the history of human
development and the diversity of forms of life
brought about by evolution, through which

The Spanish Royal Mint is honoured to be part, once again, of the
World Money Fair and we are pleased to present some exciting
products that will promote our business and support the hobby
of coin collecting.
As in previous years, at the convention we present our latest
2013 issues as well as an advance of our collector coin programme
for 2014.
Apart from a 30 Euro BU silver coin, in 2013 we issued a collection
of four proof coins dedicated to the 75 th Birthday Anniversary of
His Majesty King Juan Carlos I.
Last December we launched the fi rst six coins in the “Royal Sites”
series, in which we depict palaces, monasteries and convents built
for and with the patronage of the Spanish Monarchy. An additional
six coins completing this collection will be issued next March.
With the same artistic approach of the series dedicated to the
“Greatest Spanish Painters”, last year we chose eleven paintings,
among the many masterpieces housed at the Prado Museum, to
start the series “Treasures of the Spanish Museums”. Two out of
the fi ve coins in the 2014 issue will depict works of art from El
Greco, commemorating his 400 th Anniversary.
We will also dedicate the 2014 face value BU silver coin to El
Greco. Painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance,
El Greco is regarded as a precursor of both Expressionism and
Cubism.
For the 5 th issue in the “Jewels of Numismatics” series we will
replicate coins from the Catholic Monarchs, Queen Isabella I of
Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. Their marriage united
both crowns under the same family and could be considered the
origin of the unifi cation of Spain.

Seit dem 10. Oktober 1989, dem Tag, an dem der
„Wiener Philharmoniker“ erstmals zu erwerben
war, gelten die Münze und das weltberühmte
Orchester als die bekanntesten Botschafter
Österreichs in der Welt. Bereits in den ersten drei
Monaten wurde das „Goldstück“ über 620.000
Mal verkauft – und das, obgleich die Briten mit
ihrer „Britannia“ schon zwei Jahre zuvor die erste
europäische Anlagemünze in Umlauf gebracht
hatten.
Zur Geschichte
Der Startschuss zur Entwicklung der ersten österreichischen
Anlagemünze fiel im November 1988.
Anlass bot eine nationale Gesetzesnovelle, die
es erstmals ermöglichte, reine Goldmünzen zum
Tageskurs auszugeben. Binnen weniger Monate
entwickelte sich die Idee, Anlegern ein Stück geprägter
österreichischer Musikkultur anzubieten,
als Kassenschlager: Schon 1990 war der „Wiener
Philharmoniker“ die europaweit meistverkaufte
Münze und gewann laut „World Gold Council“ in
den Jahren 1992, 1995, 1996 und 2000 sogar den
Titel der „Meistgekauften Münze der Welt“.
Das Design
Thomas Pesendorfer, heute Chefgraveur der
Münze Österreich AG, entwarf das Motiv. Für die
Vorderseite wählte er acht charakteristische Orchesterinstrumente:
Im Vordergrund fünf Streichinstrumente,
dahinter das Horn, das Fagott sowie
die Harfe und darüber, halbkreisförmig angeordnet,
der Schriftzug „Wiener Philharmoniker“. Für
die Rückseite entschied sich Pesendorfer für die
Since October 10, 1989, the day when the ‚Vienna
Philharmonic‘ was first put on the market, the
coin and the world-famous orchestra have been
the best-known ambassadors of Austria around
the world. Only in the first three months, the
‚gold piece‘ was already sold over 620,000
times – even though two years earlier the British

European bullion coin, into circulation.
How it began
The go-ahead for the development of the first
Austrian bullion coin was given in November
1988, when a national law was amended, making
it possible, for the first time, to sell pure gold
bullion coins at the day‘s current rate. Within
just a few months, the idea to offer investors a
piece of minted Austrian music culture became
a real top-selling success. In 1990, the Vienna
Philharmonic led sales already in European
bullion market. According to the World Gold
Council, the Philharmonic was the world‘s bestselling
coin in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2000.
About the design
Thomas Pesendorfer, today head engraver at
the Austrian Mint, created the Philharmonic‘s
design. The obverse features eight characteristic
orchestra instruments: Five string instruments
in the front, behind them a French horn, a
bassoon and a harp, with the legend ‚Wiener
Philharmoniker‘ above in a half circle. For the
reverse, Pesendorfer chose the famous pipe organ
of the Golden Hall at the Vienna Musikverein,
berühmte, 1872 von Friedrich Ladegast erbaute
Orgel aus dem Goldenen Saal des Wiener Musikvereins.
Darüber im Rund der Schriftzug „Republik
Österreich“ und waagerecht unter der Orgelbalustrade
das Feingewicht und etwas kleiner
das Prägejahr. Am unteren Münzrand ist das Nominal
angegeben. Bis auf die Umstellung auf den
Euro-Nennwert im Jahre 2002 und das kontinuierlich
aktualisierte Prägejahr blieb das Aussehen des
Wiener Philharmonikers bis heute unverändert.
Die Prägung
Die Prägung der Münzen findet bis heute ausschließlich
in der Münze Österreich AG statt, die
unter anderem die österreichischen Euro- und
Cent-Münzen für den normalen Umlauf produziert
und mit ihren Sammlerprodukten zu den weltweit
führenden Unternehmen der Branche zählt. 1989
– im Geburtsjahr des „Wiener Philharmonikers“
– bekam das „alte Amt“ eine neue Struktur und
wurde als Münze Österreich AG ein Tochterunternehmen
der Österreichischen Nationalbank.

organ balustrade. The face value is on the lower
edge of the coin. Except for the conversion into
a Euro denomination in 2002, the design of the
Philharmonic coins to date remains unchanged.
Minting the coin
The Philharmonic coins are made exclusively by
the Austrian Mint, which is also commissioned
to strike all Austrian euro and cent circulation
coins and a leading producer of collector coins
worldwide. In 1989 – the year the Philharmonic
was born – the old ‚Amt‘, the former Austrian
state mint, was restructured and turned into a
corporation by the name of Austrian Mint AG, as
a subsidiary of the Austrian central bank.

Mittlerweile wird der „Wiener Philharmoniker“ in
vier Größen angeboten: Die 1 Unze-Münze (seit
1988) mit einem Nennwert von 2000 Schilling
und ab 2002 mit einem Nennwert von 100 Euro;
die 1/4 Unze-Münze (seit 1988) mit dem Nennwert
von 500 Schilling/25 Euro; die 1/10 Unze-Münze
mit 200 Schilling/10 Euro Nennwert (seit 1991)
und seit 1994 zusätzlich eine 1/2 Unze-Münze mit
1000 Schilling/50 Euro Nennwert. Alle Goldmünzen
verfügen über einen geriffelten Rand und
schimmern durch ihren hohen Feingoldgehalt von
999,9‰ in einem warmen Goldgelb.
Seit dem 1. Februar 2008 wird auch eine Silberversion
der Münze mit einem Nennwert von 1,50
Euro herausgegeben.
Zu besonderen Anlässen hat die Münze Österreich
AG immer wieder besondere Ausgaben
des Wiener Philharmonikers herausgebracht: So
zum 15. Jahrestag (2004) den „Big Phil“ in einer
limitierten Auflage von 15 Stück. Die gewaltige
1000-Unzen-Münze mit einem Nennwert von
100.000 Euro bringt ein Gewicht von sage und
schreibe 31,103 kg auf die Waage und landete
prompt im „Guinness Buch der Rekorde“. Die
seinerzeit weltgrößte Münze musste gegossen
werden, da eine Prägung in diesen Dimensionen
nicht möglich war und wurde bis auf ein einziges
Exemplar verkauft. Dieses hat nach einer Ausstellungsreise
rund um die Welt – unter anderem zur
Berliner World Money Fair – im Münzmuseum der
Wiener Nationalbank sein zu Hause gefunden.
Philharmonic variety
Meanwhile, the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin is
available in 4 sizes: The one-ounce piece (since
1988) with a denomination of 2000 schilling, and
since 2002 with a denomination of 100 euro; the
¼-ounce coin (since 1988) with a denomination of
500 schilling/25 euro; the 1/10-ounce coin with a
denomination of 200 schilling/10 euro; and since
1994 also a ½-ounce coin with a denomination
of 1,000 schilling/50 euro. The gold bullion coins
all have a dented edge and a warm yellow-golden
color due to their 999,9‰ fine gold content.
Since February 1, 2008, the mint has issued a
silver version of the coin, as well, which has a
denomination of 1.50 euro.
The Austrian Mint has released special versions
of the Vienna Philharmonic on special occasions.
On its 15th anniversary, ‚Big Phil‘ was issued
in a limited edition of only 15 pieces. The huge
1,000-ounce coin weighs no less than 31.103 kg
and therefore promptly entered the Guinness
Books of Records. The then largest coin in the
world had to be cast instead of minted because
of its sheer size. All pieces were sold – except
for one which has been on display at the Money
museum of the Austrian central bank after
returning from an exhibition tour around the
world during which it was also showcased at the
World Money Fair.
Zum 20jährigen Jubiläum im Jahr 2009 brachte

all diese Münzen übereinander, würde die Säule
von über 15.000 Metern bei weitem die Höhe des

Mit dem Beginn der Finanzkrise im Jahr 2008
wurden die bisherigen Erfolgszahlen nochmals
deutlich gesteigert. Allein im Jahr 2009 wurden
Wiener Philharmoniker mit einem Gesamtgewicht
von fast 36 Tonnen reinen Goldes veräußert.
Damit zählt die österreichische Anlagemünze
neben dem Krügerrand, dem Gold Maple Leaf
und dem American Eagle nach wie vor zu den
begehrtesten Stücken weltweit.
Wir dürfen gespannt sein, welche Überraschungen
die Münze Österreich AG zum 25. Jubiläum
ihres Wiener Philharmonikers plant. Ganz sicher
werden die Besucher der 43. World Money Fair zu
den ersten gehören, die sie zu sehen bekommen.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary in
2009 the Austrian Mint released a special issue
weighing 20 ounces, with a face value of 2,000
euro. Of the total mintage of 6,027 (which is
three times the anniversary year) 2009 coins
went to each America and Japan; the remaining
2009 coins were offered on the European market.
Best-selling European bullion coin
Only from 1989 to 2004, over 8.2 million
gold Philharmonics were sold, an amount
corresponding to 174 tons of pure gold. If you
made a stack of all these coins, they would form a
pillar taller than 15,000 meters, by far surpassing
the height of Mount Everest (8,850 m).
Since the onset of the financial crisis in 2008,
the former sales records saw another clear
increase. Only in 2009, the total gold weight
from all Philharmonic coins sold in that year was
almost equal to 36 tons of pure gold. Thus, the
Austrian bullion coin is among the most soughtafter
investment coins worldwide, along with
the Krugerrand, the Maple Leaf Gold and the
American Eagle.

für die erste große deutsche und europäische
Katasatrophe des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Spiegelt das Notgeld des I. Weltkrieges eine Mangelsituation,
so waren die damaligen Künstlereditionen
von Weltkriegsmedaillen „patriotischer
Luxus“. Der Wertewandel kam in veränderten
Bildthemen im Medium der Medaille zum Ausdruck.

Coins and medals are an immediate testimony to
the first great European and German catastrophe
of the 20 th century. ‚Notgeld‘ – the emergency
money from World War I – reflects a shortage
situation, whereas the artist editions of war
medallions from that time were a ‚patriotic luxury‘.
The change in values manifested itself in the new
themes depicted on medals. Never before had
such a great variety of art medals been created
in just four years, including even works of young

vorgebracht worden, die auch junge Künstler
der Moderne mit einbezogen. Die vom Berliner
Münzkabinett initiierte Edition der „Freunde
der Deutschen Schaumünze“ wird erstmals mit
ausgewählten anderen Kunstmedaillen der Zeit
ausgestellt. Berücksichtigt und an einzelnen
Beispielen verdeutlicht wird die internationale
Perspektive der alliierten Gegner Deutschlands.
Die Rezeption des Ersten Weltkrieges in Deutschland
wird bis hin zu einer neuen Medaillen-Edition
‚1914–2014‘ verfolgt, in der Medaillenkünstler
heute das kriegerische Jahrhundert reflektieren.
Diese Edition wird ebenfalls im Rahmen der Ausstellung
präsentiert. Die Ausstellung wird überwiegend
aus den Beständen des Münzkabinetts
bestritten. Die Spannbreite der ausgestellten
Arbeiten reicht von Benno Elkans ‚Stirb und werde!’
(1915) bis zu Klaus Kowalskis ‚wozu?’ (2013).

Berlin Numismatic Collection will be showcased
together with other selected art medals from
that time. The international perspective of the
Allies fighting against Germany is presented, as
well. Another focus is on the reception of World
War I in Germany over time, up to the recently
issued edition of medallions ‘1914–2014’, designed
by contemporary medal artists reflecting upon
a century of wars, which is also featured in the
exhibition. Most of the objects on display are
from the holdings of the museum. The exhibition
covers a wide scope, with works ranging from
Benno Elkan’s ‘Die and come into being’ (1915) to
‘what for?’ (2013), by Klaus Kowalski. All medals

a number hark back quite some time.

Bleiben wir in Kopenhagen und reisen gleichzeitig
weiter nach Griechenland. Dieser Spagat gelingt
mit dem griechischen König Georg I., der als Prinz
von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg
1845 in Kopenhagen geboren wurde. Das mit
seinem Konterfei angebotene griechische 100
Drachmen-Stück aus dem Jahr 1876 wurde in nur
76 Exemplaren ausgeprägt (Schätzung: 40.000
Euro).
Höhepunkt der italienischen Prägungen in Auktion
Künker 244 ist zweifellos ein prachtvolles 10
Zecchinen-Stück von 1677, geprägt auf Befehl von
Antonio Theodoro Trivulzio in Retegno (Schätzung:
100.000 Euro).
Nur 29 Münzen stammen aus Polen, aber was
für Münzen! Allein für diese 29 Münzen wurden
mehr als 600.000 Euro veranschlagt! Die teuerste
polnische Münze ist ein 5 Dukaten-Stück
von 1614, geprägt in Bromberg. Das wohl unike
Stück zeigt ein prachtvolles Porträt Sigismunds
III. (Schätzung: 80.000 Euro).
Let us stay in Copenhagen a bit longer while
travelling to Greece at the same time. Impossible?
Well, we will manage to do so looking at a coin of
the Greek king George I, who was born as Prince
of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg in
Copenhagen in 1845. His portrait is shown on the
100 drachmae piece from 1876 of which only 76
examples were made (estimate: 40,000 euros).
The unchallenged highlight of the Italian section
of Künker auction sale 244 is a gorgeous 10
zecchini piece from 1677, minted in Retegno at the
behest of Antonio Theodoro Trivulzio (estimate:
100,000 euros).
From Poland come only 29 coins – but these coins
have no peer! The pre-sale estimates of these 29
items add up to more than 600,000 euros! The
most expensive Polish coin is a 5 ducat piece from
1614, minted in Bromberg in 1614. This object,
in all probability a unique specimen, depicts a
magnificent portrait of Sigismund III (estimate:
80,000 euros).

with Albania. Denmark is the first stop, with
much to be learned from this country’s colonial
past. Did you know that there was a Danish
Christiansburg in African Guinea? A double
ducat of Christian V from 1688 is a witness of
that period of the Danish past (estimate: 15,000
euros). A 5 ducat piece made of guinea gold
dates to 1704 (estimate: 75,000 euros). And the
Danish Asiatic Company had piasters produced
in 1774, following the Spanish model, which were
made for the trade with China (EF-FDC, estimate:

was awarded to brilliant William Waterfield for
his achievements regarding the study of Hindi
language. Waterfield was the one that made
a great deal of literature from the Indian subcontinent
widely known thanks to his congenial
translations he made during his career in the
British civil service of India (estimate: 12,500 euros).
Russia
129 lots comprising Russian rarities, ranging
from Alexei Michailovich to the Russian Republic
conclude the auction. The most expensive piece
is a test strike of a rouble from 1801, struck in the
Imperial Bank Mint of St. Peterburg. This great
rarity comes with an expert report written by
Igor Schiryakov of the State Historical Museum
Moscow (estimate: 75,000 euros).

At the same time, we are looking forward to continue our successful partnership

in its history. These major events represent a challenge for both countries, as

numismatic programs with extraordinary highlights.
Of course, we must not forget: coins for these outstanding events are not
