From the President
From Our House
to Yours
Whatever your holiday tradition this time of year, WGBH is here to help you
celebrate—at home with your family, out in your community and on the go.
We also have created some local holiday traditions of our own, starting with
89.7 WGBH host Brian O’Donovan’s popular A Christmas Celtic Sojourn live
concerts across massachusetts and new Hampshire throughout the month
(see page 26).
“the concerts are an extension of the annual Christmas edition of my
radio show, A Celtic Sojourn,” Brian says. “they’re a blend of music, poetry,
dance and storytelling in which i play the role of Fear an Tí, ‘the man of the
house.’ We strive to create an
atmosphere that welcomes you
into our home.” And what a home
it is, filled with world-class Celtic
talent, from the groundbreaking
singing group solas to virtuoso
harpist and singer maeve Gilchrist.
to spread the joy even further, you
can hear one of the captivating
Christmas Celtic Sojourn concerts
from Boston’s Cutler majestic
theatre on 89.7 WGBH on
saturday, december 21, a performance we’re also sharing with public radio
listeners nationwide through Pri.
this year, we also will be sharing more of the Hub’s classical holiday
happenings than ever before on 99.5 WCrB and classicalnewengland.org
(page 27). Highlights include the Boston Children’s Chorus: All Choir Holiday
Concert; Eternal Echoes for Hanukkah with WCrB host James david Jacobs
and new england Conservatory professor Hankus netsky exploring Jewish
sacred music; and Handel’s Messiah from the Handel and Haydn society with
Harry Christophers conducting this memorable live performance from
symphony Hall.
Of course, the holidays also can bring a certain measure of family drama,
and we have plenty of that, too! Can’t wait for next month’s premiere of
Downton Abbey season 4, our WGBH Masterpiece co-production with Carnival
Films? Unwrap some tantalizing teasers from the series’ creators and cast
members in this month’s Return to Downton Abbey (page 10). Or enjoy our
Call the Midwife Holiday Special (page 18).
this issue of Explore! (in print and our video-rich digital edition at
wgbh.org/explore) is filled with programs to keep you and your family
inspired and entertained throughout this festive time of year…a trove of
seasonal delights made possible by your generous annual support.
With thanks and best wishes for a joyful season,
Perfect Holidays?
Plans are under way for the best holidays
ever as Arthur, D.W., their family
and friends make preparations for
perfect gifts, perfect parties and perfect
family traditions for Christmas,
Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and even “Baxter
Day” (Buster and his mom’s special
celebration). The only problem is, just
as in real life, perfection is hard to
attain and things start to fall apart.
Gift Conundrum
George and the man with the Yellow Hat
are having a very merry time counting down
the days until Christmas. But there’s a bit of a
predicament: neither of them can figure out
what to give the other for a present. In the end,
both gift-giving predicaments are simply and
beautifully resolved, revealing the true spirit
of the holidays, and everybody has a very
monkey Christmas!
Making Sacrifices
At first glance, Imran Uddin is just another
27-year-old new Yorker struggling to take
over his family’s business—what’s unique is
that his father’s business is a “pick-your-own”
slaughterhouse. the son of an immigrant,
imran must confront his mixed Bangladeshi-
Puerto rican heritage and gain acceptance
from his father’s conservative muslim community. On one of islam’s holiest
days, imran must lead a sacrifice that will define him as a muslim, an American
and a son. A Son’s Sacrifice traces imran’s journey to convince himself, his
father and his muslim brethren that he is a part of their community.
and Jewish—who are training to become the next generation of professional
clergy. embarking on life paths that demand tremendous personal sacrifice
and commitment, these seminarians must uphold timeless truths in an era
that values quick fixes and hot trends, and face a public that challenges the
Rise of Christianity
WGBH’s Frontline presents the epic story of the
rise of Christianity. drawing upon historical evidence,
the series explores the life and death of
Jesus, and the men and women whose belief, conviction and martyrdom
created the religion we now know as Christianity. through interviews with
12 scholars—new testament theologians, archaeologists and historians—
the series presents their contributions to this intellectual revolution. For
example, they talk about the quest for the historical Jesus: What can we really
know? And how do we know it? Part 1 charts the epic story of the rise of
Christianity, from the life of Jesus to the period that followed his death;
Part 2 documents the rise of Christianity from a small Jewish sect to an official
religion of the roman empire.
sing and tell stories about times past,” O’Donovan says. “The great thing
about this time of year is that it gives people permission to be sentimental.
We can acknowledge the emotions attached to the season and allow ourselves
to go with them.”
This year’s lineup is full of topnotch,
professional talent led by music
director Seamus Egan and artistic director
Paula Plum. Playing at the contemporary
edge of traditional music, the groundbreaking
group Solas is returning along
with Steve Hickman, who wowed audiences
with his use of body percussion
and fiddling in 2007. Maeve Gilchrist will
bring her harp wizardry from her native
Scotland, and Mariel Vandersteel will
showcase the distinctive musical
influences of Norway with her eightstring
Hardanger fiddle.
Joining Mick McAuley, O’Donovan, and his wife, Lindsay, on vocals will
be the lead singer of the acclaimed group Voco, Moira Smiley, and Maureen
McMullan, Scottish singer and star of the PBS special, Highland Heartbeat.
There’s plenty for dance fans as well. “World champion dancer and
Riverdance star Liam Harney has cleared his international touring schedule to
choreograph and perform in this year’s show,” O’Donovan says. “And what
would Christmas Celtic be without the young dancers from Liam’s Academy of
Irish Dance in Walpole? They have truly become part of the tradition.”
If you can’t make one of the performances, listen for the radio broadcast
of one of the performances (shared nationwide via Public Radio
International) Saturday, 12/21 at 3:30pm on 89.7 WGBH.
“I can’t wait for the curtain to rise on this year’s show,” O’Donovan says.
“With the mix of great music and dance performed by such amazing artists,
and the inevitable surprise guests and performances, it promises to be a
Christmas Celtic Sojourn to remember.” For more information on concert
Catch Up with News Roundup
By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial
Every Friday, we catch up on the week’s local and national news beginning at
9am with News Roundup on The Point, hosted by senior reporter and editor
Sean Corcoran.
Journalists from the Cape, Islands and South Coast join Sean to discuss
the stories generating headlines across our region, often offering fresh analysis,
including previously unreported details and background information.
“We know our listeners value local
news, and the News Roundup is an opportunity
to talk in-depth about issues they
care about,” Sean says. “I consistently hear
from listeners how pleased they are that
they can catch up on local news in just a
short period of time, while also gaining
some insights that may not have been
contained in the original reporting of a
story.”
WCAI is the only news station in the region that airs a show entirely
dedicated to the news of the week. Discussions focus on big issues such as
the proposal to install wind turbines in Nantucket Sound, the controversial
use of herbicides on Cape Cod or the threat that wastewater poses to the
environment. But Sean also discusses hyperlocal issues, such as Town
Meeting results, local politics and community events.
“I spent 10 years working in newspapers before moving to public radio,”
Sean says, “so I really enjoy talking with print and online journalists about
their work and its significance.”
Paul Pronovost, editor of the Cape Cod Times, says he and his staff have
enjoyed participating in the News Roundup for more than a decade. “We look
forward to it every week,” he says. “It’s an opportunity to put the week’s
news in a smart, rear-view context and a great way to connect with the folks
on the Cape and Islands.”
Going on the air every Friday has been a valuable experience for Times’
writers and editors, according to Paul. “The News Roundup helped us be ahead
of the curve when it comes to the multitasking required by a modern newsroom,”
he says. “A journalist today has to be comfortable delivering the news
in ways that, frankly, might be outside his or her comfort zone. The News
Roundup has helped our reporters and editors sharpen some of those skills.”
The conversation continues at 10am, when host Diane Rehm welcomes
the nation’s top journalists to tackle major national and international stories.
Listen Friday at 9am for the News Roundup on The Point (7pm encore).
