News Continued from page 8 Travel Promotion Act Passed by House  By Hil Anderson, senior editor   Washington, DC – The Travel Promotion Act took another step toward enactment this month when the House of Representatives passed the measure by a vote of 358-66. The legislation moved back to the Senate, which voted in favor of it earlier this year but must vote once again before sending it to President Obama for his signature. The final Senate vote is expected to take place sometime in the coming weeks. The Travel Promotion Act is a major priority for the trade show industry. It is aimed Dow at promoting travel to the United States and, in particular, will ease the dreaded visa process for international trade show attendees and exhibitors. “The need for travel promotion has never been greater,” said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association. “The United States must invest in better explaining its security policies and attracting foreign travelers.” The plan includes a $10 fee levied on travelers from nations that are not required to pay the $131 visa fee. In addition, the private sector will provide matching funds up to $100 million. No taxpayer money will be used for the program. A new effort to promote travel to the United States would come at a good time for the exhibition industry. Asia is expected to climb out of the recession ahead of North America and Europe. The September 30 American Express Global Business Travel Forecast projected a 6% increase in domestic and international business travel in Asia next year compared to 1% growth in the United States, despite an average expected increase in domestic U.S. air fares of 1.2%. Reach Roger Dow at (202) 408-8422 or rdow@ustravel.org Survey Says: Most Associations are Using Social Media By Hil Anderson, senior editor San Francisco, CA – The vast majority of associations have taken the plunge into social media as a means of promoting their live meetings and, for now, are keeping it simple by sticking to the basic features of the major networking sites. A survey on the adoption of social media and digital tools by associations just released by Champion Exposition Services found that 83% of the organizations that responded were already using one or more digital tools. In addition, 91% planned to use them within the next 12 months. Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are by far the most popular means of keeping association members connected to their various events before, during and after they take place. A full 100% of the respondents use Facebook for pre-show attendee marketing and around half also use Twitter and LinkedIn. Independent show organizers were not included in the survey because Champion considered associations to already have unique communities and events in place, which affects the way social media strategies are implemented. Key Survey Findings • Facebook is the most popular social media for attendee marketing while LinkedIn is the most popular for reaching exhibitors. Twitter is used by 57% of associations to engage attendees at the event. • About 74% of Facebook users post information about their events, but only 48% use its discussion forum feature and 33% use its video applications. • 82% of Twitter users tweet to create pre-show buzz, but far fewer use session-specific channels to engage attendees or facilitate questions and answers. • The use of social media reduced the use of direct mail by 33% of associations, and 18% saw cost-savings through the reduction of other forms of marketing. • A dedicated social media manager has been hired by 18% of associations to handle the digital strategies for their events. Virtual Events Gaining Acceptance Along with social media, associations are embracing the idea of virtual events, primarily in addition to their live events. The survey reported 70% of associations either already produce virtual events or are considering the idea. Of those, 74% intended to produce them in addition to their live events, while 57% planned to produce them in conjunction with a live event. Malaysia Opens New Borneo Convention Centre to Asia Pacific Market By Hil Anderson, senior editor Kuching City, Malaysia – The newest convention center in the Asia Pacific market opened along the banks of Malaysia’s Sarawak River on October 18 by hosting a site visit for VIPs from Australia and Great Britain. “The Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) is a new landmark in town that can cater for large scale exhibitions of up to 250 multi-tiered booths and wedding receptions of up to 200 tables,” said the center’s chief executive, Trevor McCartney. The new facility offers 14 meeting rooms and four exhibit halls that can be combined for a total of 2,793 square metres (30,063 square feet). It is built in the oval shape of the local ririk leaf and is designed to funnel rain water from the roof into the landscaping irrigation system. Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) Kuching City is located in Sarawak, one of two states on the island of Borneo and the largest in Malaysia. It has been the center of Malaysia’s timber and petroleum industries. The state government has been seeking to develop the services and manufacturing sectors. Reach Trevor McCartney at +60 8239 2888 or trevor.mccartney@bcck.com.my Canon’s New Orthopaedic Show Outgrows Exhibit Hall Before Launch  By Hil Anderson, senior editor Los Angeles, CA – Canon Communications LLC said it would redraw the exhibit floor of next year’s inaugural OrthoTec Exposition & Conference and possibly expand into a temporary hall in order to accommodate the higher-than-expected demand for space at the small, specialized show. The new event for the orthopaedic device industry will launch May 12-13, 2010 at the Orthopaedic Capital Center at Grace College. That’s in the small town of Winona Lake, IN, adjacent to the orthopaedic manufacturing hub of Warsaw, IN. Canon banked on the thriving U.S. orthopaedic industry centered in the Midwest to draw exhibitors and attendees to greater Warsaw and the 15,000 gross square-foot exhibit hall at Grace College. That strategy appears to have paid off in spades. The event sold out in 12 weeks and there is currently a waiting list for additional exhibitors. Canon estimated the exhibit area currently encompassed around 8,000 net square feet (nsf) and could be expanded to 12,000 nsf if show management decides to add a temporary structure. “The temporary structure being considered will only be able to accommodate another 50 to 60 companies, which will not satisfy demand, but will allow more key orthopaedic suppliers to join the event,” said Joshua Dome, director of sales for Canon. The survey found that a significant number of respondents were less likely to conserve electricity and water or recycle paper at a hotel than they were at home. Of the 881 students who participated in the survey, 35% said they would prefer to stay in a green hotel as opposed to a non-green hotel. The plan calls for the casino developer to run shuttle service between the Cincinnati establishment and Duke Energy Convention Center for three years. The bureau said the casino would create jobs and generate revenue for the city.
