power lunch GUY TOZZOLI A Powerhouse of Global Commerce He may be retiring in two years, but Guy Tozzoli is continuing his role as president of the World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) with the same verve and gusto that are the hallmarks of his distinguished career. Guy is a New Jersey native who has held several high profile positions in the greater New York area, including responsibility for a major part of the 1964 New York World’s Fair, as well as director of the World Trade Department. In that capacity, he was responsible for the planning, design, construction, rental and operation of the World Trade Center in New York – 15 million square feet of floor area spread over seven buildings, including two 110-story towers. It was once described as the largest building project since the pyramids. In 1970, Guy was a founder of the WTCA and was elected its first and only president. Since that moment, he has worked tirelessly to build the WTCA into a major economic force in the world. He has been lauded for his achievements by global leaders such as former USSR president Mikhail Gorbachev and Capetown South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It was an honor to speak with him recently about his passion for the WTCA, his outstanding success story and his life. By Bob Dallmeyer, columnist >>Bob: How did you start your career? Guy: My first job after college was a junior engineer in the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s Engineering Department. I supervised construction activities at New York area airports, most notably the Newark Airport. >>Bob: Tell me about the role of World Trade Centers as both a business catalyst and an avenue for trade between nations. Guy: The mission of World Trade Centers is to help all types of international businesses become more successful by creating a physical facility that brings together private and governmental entities involved in trade. This creates synergies similar to a shopping center, where the many organizations located there can work with one another by taking an elevator rather than an airplane ride. This concentration of world trade entities also acts as a powerful magnet for businesses in the region and around the world. WTCs also offer special programs, such as exhibitions, trade missions, business communications and other services. >>Bob: That’s an impressive mission. Does it apply to every World Trade Center? Guy: Yes. All World Trade Centers operate under the core belief that international commerce is crucial for the economic prosperity of any region; that success will always go to those regions and businesses that have the best tools and knowledge; and that a World Trade Center can give the business community in any region the tools and information needed to be successful in international commerce. >>Bob: Tell me about your global operations and membership. Guy: The WTCA has created a network of cooperating World Trade Centers that spans the globe. A member of any World Trade Center is automatically a member of all the centers. This vastly increases the resources available to each World Trade Center and its local members. For an individual WTCA member, it’s like having branch offices around the world providing market studies, business contacts, appointments and other assistance as required.
