A LIVE Magazine Exclusive interview with the producer of Red Hots Burlesque
DOTTIE LUX
LIVE Magazine: Thank you Dottie
for taking time for our interview. Just
watching some of your videos puts
you in a mood, well you know! So
when did you first become involved in
burlesque?
Dottie Lux: I grew up in New
Jersey and was lucky enough to
be exposed to Broadway Shows
and The Rockettes at a very early
age. Performance was immediately
something I was interested in. And
then, there was that final scene in
Elvira: Mistress of the Dark--all you
Camp Queens know what I’m talking
about, she was twirling her tassels in
a sporadic and mesmerizing display.
What’s not to draw you in from
there?!
LIVE Magazine: When and how
did you get Red Hots Burlesque
started?
Dottie Lux: I started going to
burlesque shows in Coney Island
before I was 21 and was so inspired
by the performers that I saw! Before
long I took on an internship with
performance artist Ducky Doolittle
and started producing shows in
Brooklyn. Ironically, I have my college
education to thank for my burlesque
career.
LIVE Magazine: Red Hots had
a great run in New York City. You
received lots of media attention from
The New York Times, CBS, Current
TV to name a few. Does one single
night of Red Hots stand out, like out
of the routine?
Dottie Lux: We have been even
more successful in San Francisco!
We brought the show in 2008 and
at that time there were no weekly
shows. We remain the only weekly
show in San Francisco and we’re
THREE nights each week! Our
show is always different and hosts
a wide variety of performers so it’s
hard to choose a favorite. The most
thrilling though has been bringing our
Wednesday show to SupperCLUB
San Francisco. It’s a massive artistic
space that is the ultimate in comfort
and decadence for both audience
members and performers. It is a
beautiful backdrop for aerialists,
contortionists, large group acts,
dramatic prop pieces and all sorts of
big bold burlesque acts. It always my
favorite to fill that room!
LIVE Magazine: When did you
move to the west coast. I see you
were voted #1 in Nightlife from YELP.
How does that feel?
Dottie Lux: I left NYC
Thanksgiving of 2007. It wasn’t easy
to leave, but I have fully adapted to
the West Coast lifestyle and I couldn’t
be happier, dude! As for YELP it’s
such a hilarious beast, but what an
honor to be noticed. As with any
business on that website, the people
have the power so it’s our number
one goal to satisfy everyone. This is
the main motivator for the having so
much variety in our show; everyone
leaves getting what they want.
LIVE Magazine: What LA clubs or
venues have you performed in?
Dottie Lux: For our Palm Springs
show we are bringing a different LA
performer each night. They are at the
top of their fields internationally, yes,
but especially locally. Lux LaCroix
is a burlesque star, documentary
filmmaker, professional ballerina
and award winning choreographer.
Professionally she has worked with
artists such as Kanye West, Chris
Brown, N.E.R.D., OutKast, Janet
Jackson and Lady GaGa. Selene
Luna has a regular show in LA called
“The Dog and Pony Show” and has
gained high acclaim performing
with Dita Von Teese and Margaret
Cho, but also for her long list of
work in Film and Television. We also
have Kristina Nekyia bellydancer,
contortionist, fire eater and nymph
she was the 2010 First Runner-Up for
the title of Queen of Burlesque at the
Burlesque Hall of Fame competition
in Las Vegas, and in 2005 she was
the Hips of Fury Belly Dance Ultimate
Soloist.
LIVE Magazine: What kind of
events does Red Hots Burlesque
perform?
Dottie Lux: We perform wherever
will hire us from happy birthday
messages delivered in corporate tech
offices (we wont say which) to large
scale arena shows for thousands of
people. We love being on stage and
giving people something to think
about.
LIVE Magazine: What lies in the
future with The Red Hots?
Dottie Lux: Complete world
domination. It’s important to us that
the message of body love, feminism
and joy is brought everywhere. Starting
with the untapped Palm Springs.
LIVE Magazine: We are looking
forward to The Red Hots and Dottie
Lux at Purple Room in Palm Springs,
California. What a salsy night it will
be!
