The owner of Streetbar, Dick Haskamp says, “Jimmy James
was not who I was expecting. Well, that’s not quite true. I
didn’t know what to expect. I’d never even spoken to him when
he showed fuga. up Um for quiatur his first estemporem sound quis check eaquunto - I’d conse only dealt with his
manager. I was filled with trepidation as I awaited his arrival. I
mean Jimmy James is BIG! He’s done all the major talk shows,
he’s appeared at huge venues around the world. What on earth
will he think of our beloved little StreetBar? I just knew he’d be
an evil, demanding ‘you know what’, and that he’d hate us and
probably fire his manager! Absolutely WRONG!! The person
who came in the door was perfectly charming, unassuming and
appreciative of everything we did for him. And now he’s my special
little sister who continues to blow me away with his talent at
every show!!
LIVE Magazine: Jimmy where did you first perform and what did that feel like?
Jimmy James: The first time I did Marilyn Monroe in public was Halloween
1981 (when all good drag is born) in a Dance Club in my hometown of
San Antonio, TX. I entered the costume contest. I asked the MC if I could
borrow the mic. I sang acapella in Marilyn’s breathy voice: “Happy Halloween
to u... Happy Halloween, San Antonio, Happy Halloween to u.” The place
erupted with screams and applause! They went ballistic! I blew kisses to LIVE Magazine: Later you seemed to have concentrated on your song
them and they continued screaming wildly. For a boy who was hardly making writing and singing career. Your hit single, ‘Fashionista’, was at the top of The
any money in a part-time job at The Gap, it felt like the parting of the red Billboards Chart and is played at Fashion Shows worldwide. How does that
seas. It was that pivotal moment that said ... “you don’t need to be selling feel when you are present and hear your music?
jeans, you need to be Marilyn Monroe for the public. They miss her.” I met
my calling that night. I opened the window and she entered me... HALF there was PAGE Jimmy HORIZONTAL James: AD IT’S THE BIGGEST HIGH I’VE EVER KNOWN. To know
no turning back.
9.625 that X I conquered 7.98 something that no other “impersonator” could do - break
LIVE Magazine: Who were some of the first voices you took on and I
must say conquered?
Jimmy James: They were all hard work usually taking about 2 years to
learn. There was NO YouTube (a vital tool for me these days). The first voices
to conquer were: Judy Garland, Cher, Billie Holiday, Bette Davis, Eartha Kitt,
Mae West, Barbra Streisand (Barbra took 8 years to get good). Eventually I
branched out into Patsy Cline, Karen Carpenter, Diana Ross, Sonny & Cher,
Boy George, Madonna etc... Recently I’ve been able to do tributes to: Adele,
Elvis, Lana Del Ray, Macy Gray, Shirley Bassey and working on more... I
WILL ONLY TRIBUTE ARTISTS THAT I MYSELF ADORE. This keeps me
loving what I do.
LIVE Magazine: I first met you in Dallas in the late ‘80’s at The Village
Station during your Marilyn Monroe years. You have always packed audiences
at clubs but when your performance on The Phil Donahue Show you
became Internationally known and an instant hit sensation. What were your
Marilyn years like?
Jimmy James: My Marilyn Years were very busy, rewarding, hectic,
exhausting, invigorating, tragic, triumphant, frightening, frustrating, joyful,
sad, limiting, exuberant, powerful, vulnerable, possessed, magical. I was an
actor/performance artist who found his niche at 19 years of age. At times
I wished I could talk to her. I would think of her and wonder if was doing a
good job or not. I wanted my portrayal to be authentic. Remember, back then
there was NO YouTube. I didn’t have much access to understanding how to
play her outside of a movie script. I portrayed her from a feeling I got from
all I read about her. Years later after I retired her in ‘97, with the invention of
YouTube...I was very proud of myself. I discovered I played her right! I did it
right! I did it right! And Thank God I did! Because now there’s videos of me
on YouTube as MM. Whewww - I don’t have to cringe, I did it right!
away and do their own thing. In additionally, all my impersonations, I can
stand PROUDLY say, “I proved myself as an artist in my own right too.” I created
something original and I got respected for it. I’m proud of my whole album
JAMESTOWN. You know you’ve made it when drag queens around the
world are lip synching to the song/s you wrote. I see them on YouTube! I beam
with pride. Also when TV or film uses my music - and PAYS ME! What a thrill.
LIVE Magazine: What are your plans for the future?
Jimmy James: I am looking for a serious film maker to help me produce
a documentary of my Marilyn Years. I have tons of footage and thousands of
photographs to support the project. I would also like to keep active with my
nightclub act. StreetBar helps me practice LIVE and develop NEW material.
This is CRUCIAL. The StreetBar “Every Last Tue” monthly gig is very valuable
to me as I’m playing more theaters now around the country. I’m able to
keep my performance skills sharp and innovative - well practiced. This gig
builds my confidence. I’m so lucky and grateful I have a place to support my
“Work-In-Progress.” Plus Palm Springs is so glamorous to me.
LIVE Magazine: Palm Springs is so happy to have you for at least one
spectacular night at STREETBAR. Thank you Dick Haskamp for bringing us
Jimmy James!
