1815 - 1817 Scroll Book - Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee

The Meeting appointed Messers William Roberts, William Lindsay, David Miln and John
Sturrock a sub Committee to wait on Mr Patrick Anderson the Dean of Guild to request that
he intimate in the public papers that the Guildry Incorporation are to hold their adjourned
Meeting on Wednesday 23d Current in the Guild hall at 12 o’clock noon to reconsider the
resolutions passed at the last meeting of the Incorporation. The sub Committee to report on
Thursday evening at 7 o’clock.

The Clerk stated to the meeting that John Baxter Esq of Idvies and Alexander Reid Esq
Merchant in Dundee had this day waited upon him and stated that they were a deputation
from a body of Gentlemen who were anxious to restore peace and harmony to the Toun of
Dundee by becoming mediators in the dispute between the Magistrates and Council and the
Guildry Incorporation; and that they would gladly meet a Sub Committee of the Guildry to
ascertain the nature and extent of the Guildrys claims. The Committee always willing to enter
into an amicable arrangement with the Magistrates and Council appointed Messers William
Roberts, William Lindsay, David Milln and John Sturrock as a sub Committee (Mr Roberts to
be preses) to meet with Mr Baxter and the other Gentlemen with instructions to state to them
that the Guildry claim the unqualified election by the suffrages of the Incorporation of the
dean of Guild, who shall be ex officio a member of the Toun council, the election of Assessors,
Collector, Clerk and officer and the management of their own funds and to that end:
1 st That the Magistrates and Council shall allow the Guildry at their first meeting to elect
assessors to the dean, also the Collector, Clerk and Officer, because these officers form no part
of the sett of the Burgh, but are the officers of the Guildry as a separate Independent
Incorporation.
2d. That Mr Anderson and the assessors so elected shall have the exclusive management of
the funds under the directions of general meetings of the Guildry and for that purpose the
Magistrates and Council shall deliver to Mr Anderson and the assessors the Guildry accounts,
vouchers and Bonds.
3d That the Guildry shall henceforth be entitled to meet in their own hall and to enact by- laws
not affecting the political or judicial functions of the present dean.
4 th That the Magistrates and Council shall prepare and subscribe a petition to the Convention
of Burghs praying that that body will sanction to the Guildry Incorporation the election of
their dean of Guild who shall be ex officio a member of the Toun Council and that the sett of
the burgh be altered accordingly.
5 th . That this petition along with petitions from the Guildry and Nine Incorporated Trades
praying for the said alteration in the set of the Burgh be deposited in the hands of Mr Baxter
and the other Gentlemen who mediate between the parties, and to remain in their possession
until the annual meeting of the Convention of Burghs.
6h That a Gentleman to be named by the Mediators shall be appointed by the Toun Council as
assessor to the Commissioners who may be nominated by them to attend the next meeting of
the convention in order to state to the convention the Guildrys claims.

adjourned meeting of the Guildry on Wednesday next or whether the Magistrates would allow
