3. Methodology<br />

<strong>The</strong> qualitative research approach was utilized <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g relevant exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation with<br />

primary data collected pr<strong>in</strong>cipally through focus group discussions, as well as key <strong>in</strong>formant<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews. This approach was <strong>use</strong>d to provide a richer underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the perceived behavioral<br />

pattern <strong>and</strong> social mean<strong>in</strong>g as it relates to <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> with<strong>in</strong> the social context <strong>and</strong> it was<br />

anticipated that this methodology would also give a better grasp of the concept of the subject matter.<br />

3.1 Focus Groups<br />

Focus group discussion was the method utilized to get the society’s underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> <strong>and</strong> its related themes from the perspective of <strong>young</strong> persons.<br />

Ten focus group discussions were conducted to achieve the underly<strong>in</strong>g objectives as they relate to the<br />

<strong>l<strong>in</strong>k</strong> <strong>between</strong> <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> <strong>among</strong> the youth. <strong>The</strong> target group consisted of <strong>in</strong> school <strong>and</strong><br />

out of school males <strong>and</strong> females <strong>between</strong> the ages of 14 <strong>and</strong> 24 years. Participants were selected from<br />

primary <strong>and</strong> secondary schools, technical/vocational <strong>in</strong>stitutions, college <strong>and</strong> university, probationary<br />

services, as well as urban, suburban <strong>and</strong> rural areas, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ghetto or grass-root communities. Eight<br />

participants were identified <strong>and</strong> selected to participate <strong>in</strong> each focus group discussion.<br />

To obta<strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to youth’s perception of the <strong>l<strong>in</strong>k</strong> <strong>between</strong> <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>.<br />

To get an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the pattern <strong>and</strong> type of <strong>drug</strong> usage <strong>and</strong> sexual behavior/activity<br />

<strong>among</strong> the youth.<br />

Study youth views of current <strong>in</strong>tervention programmes <strong>and</strong> conduct a needs assessment <strong>among</strong><br />

youth to make effective recommendations, which will <strong>in</strong>fluence positive behavior <strong>among</strong> youth<br />

<strong>and</strong> thereby reduce youth risky behavior.<br />
