4.2 Focus Group Discussions<br />
<strong>The</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g summarizes the responses of the 10 focus group discussions:<br />
Def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the term “<strong>drug</strong>”<br />
<strong>The</strong> term “<strong>drug</strong>” was generally def<strong>in</strong>ed by participants as be<strong>in</strong>g any substance that when taken <strong>in</strong>to the<br />
body modifies the manner <strong>in</strong> which the body works. Drugs were perceived by some youth as harmful<br />
to the body <strong>and</strong> health, <strong>and</strong> also addictive.<br />
“When I hear the word <strong>drug</strong>, I th<strong>in</strong>k of someth<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>people</strong> <strong>use</strong> that is not healthy to<br />
our body, anybody <strong>and</strong> if we ab<strong>use</strong> it can ca<strong>use</strong> a negative effect on us. Once it is harmful<br />
to the body <strong>and</strong> we know it can deteriorate our body, then it’s a <strong>drug</strong>. I also th<strong>in</strong>k it<br />
affects your body <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. It mash up your bra<strong>in</strong>. It’s a mood alter<strong>in</strong>g chemical; alters<br />
the way you th<strong>in</strong>k.” [females <strong>and</strong> males, 14-16, <strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> out of school <strong>and</strong> 20-24 <strong>in</strong> school]<br />
On the other h<strong>and</strong>, other participants <strong>in</strong>dicated that some <strong>drug</strong>s such as pharmaceuticals were <strong>use</strong>ful<br />
<strong>and</strong> it was the ab<strong>use</strong> of <strong>drug</strong>s that was dangerous. Still some participants def<strong>in</strong>ed a <strong>drug</strong> as someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that positively stimulated the m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>to a state of meditation <strong>and</strong> relaxation.<br />
“Someth<strong>in</strong>g somebody take to feel nice <strong>and</strong> relax their m<strong>in</strong>d; to refresh your memories,<br />
take it to be cool <strong>and</strong> revise. <strong>The</strong> <strong>drug</strong> let out the real person <strong>in</strong> you.” [females 14-16 <strong>and</strong><br />
mixed 20-24, out of school]<br />
Participants identified the follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>drug</strong>s that were <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Grenada – marijuana, coca<strong>in</strong>e, crack<br />
coca<strong>in</strong>e, hero<strong>in</strong>, alcohol, tobacco, <strong>and</strong> hemp. <strong>The</strong>y also po<strong>in</strong>ted out that other local herbs such as black<br />
sage <strong>and</strong> rosemary were also smoked.<br />
It was noted that the majority of participants were able to differentiate legal (alcohol, cigarettes <strong>and</strong><br />
over the counter <strong>drug</strong>s / pharmaceuticals only for medic<strong>in</strong>al value) <strong>and</strong> illegal <strong>drug</strong>s (marijuana,<br />
coca<strong>in</strong>e, hero<strong>in</strong>). However, a few participants expressed belief that such substances like alcohol,<br />
cigarette <strong>and</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e were illegal <strong>drug</strong>s.<br />
It was further noted that <strong>in</strong> four focus groups, alcohol was not mentioned as a <strong>drug</strong> <strong>and</strong> was<br />
subsequently <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong>to the discussion by the moderator.<br />
