The table shows Malaysia is the country that has least hospital accredited in Joint Commission
International. But there are 15 hospitals in Singapore and 11 hospitals in India accredited in Joint
Commission International (JCI).
This is an important factor as patients see wheter the hospital is
accredited to make their choice to come for treatment.
Thirdly, Malaysia should specialise in a particular medical field. For example, in the early of 1970s,
Thailand specialise in sex change operation, then turn into cosmetic surgery. Malaysia can also
specialise in a particular field in order to build up reputation and generate more revenue.
Fourth recommendation, Malaysia should utilise its natural attractiveness. Especially Melaka and
George Town was listed in World Heritage in 2008. And there are many hospital and healthcare
provider located in these two cities.
Fifth is to make Malaysia a one-stop service centre for medical tourism. It recommends each hospital
establish specific department to handle the matter of international patients, for example admission, visa,
travel agent, interpreter, accommodation, catering, sightseeing tour whatever will ease international
patients seek medical treatment in Malaysia.
Medical tourism is a profitable industry and its inflow could stimulate the countries economy. The
domino effect of medical tourism would enhance growth in medical services, hospitality, tourism of
Malaysia’s scenic destinations and not forgetting shopping. The impact would be certainly long term
profitability and growth in the industry.
