1 Introduction<br />
<strong>Hunter</strong> <strong>Water</strong> <strong>Corporation</strong><br />
<strong>Hunter</strong> <strong>Water</strong> <strong>Corporation</strong> is a State Owned <strong>Corporation</strong> established under the State Owned<br />
<strong>Corporation</strong>s Act 1989 (<strong>NSW</strong>). <strong>Hunter</strong> <strong>Water</strong> provides water and wastewater services to over<br />
half a million people in the lower <strong>Hunter</strong> region of New South Wales. Its area of operations is<br />
shown schematically in Figure 1-1; it covers 5,366km 2 encompassing the local government<br />
areas of Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Newcastle, Port Stephens, small parts of<br />
Singleton and, since 1 July 2008, the Shire of Dungog.<br />
There are approximately 225,000 properties connected to the water network and over 213,000<br />
to the wastewater network. The total written down value of the assets <strong>Hunter</strong> <strong>Water</strong> utilises to<br />
deliver services to its customers is approximately $2.8 billion.<br />
<strong>Hunter</strong> <strong>Water</strong> also supplies bulk water to small parts of the Great Lakes area, has the capability<br />
to supply up to 35 megalitres of water per day to the Central Coast, and provides some bulk<br />
stormwater services to Cessnock, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.<br />
