meadows, limpid alpine lakes,<br />
stunning views and quietude<br />
are the features of these mountains.<br />
All the excursions on the Maddalene<br />
start from Fondo, the capital<br />
of Upper Val di Non, situated<br />
between the alpine passes of<br />
the Palade and the Mendola<br />
joining Trentino to Alto Adige.<br />
Lying in a splendid panoramic<br />
plateau is the very picturesque<br />

of the valley and main trade<br />
centre is Cles, situated lower<br />
down the valley on the left bank<br />
of Lake Santa Giustina.<br />
Val di Non also has a more rugged<br />
and partly unknown side to<br />
it. Hidden ravines and gorges,<br />
scoured over thousands of<br />
years by the force of water,<br />
extend for dozens of kilometres<br />
in the woods or below the historic<br />
centres of the old villages.<br />
For this reason the valley has<br />
been renamed the LAND OF CAN-<br />
YONS and it offers two wonderful<br />
itineraries among the rocks: the<br />
RIO SASS CANYON in Fondo and<br />
the NOVELLA FLUVIAL PARK between<br />
Dambel and Romallo.<br />
Caskets of Spirituality and<br />
Attractions Val di Non has a<br />
rich history and culture and the valley<br />
is dotted with dozens of castles hidden<br />
among dense woods or in full view, like<br />
the eye-catching CASTEL THUN.<br />
Privileged witnesses of the millennial<br />
religious faith of the farming population<br />
are the small churches and isolated<br />
hermitages. Outstanding among these<br />
and one of the most fascinating in Europe<br />
is the SAN ROMEDIO SANCTUARY with seven<br />
chapels built one above the other on a<br />
steep rock crag in the valley of the same<br />
name. It is a place of great appeal and<br />
has been the destination of pilgrimages<br />
