by scann<strong>in</strong>g their barcodes with an appropriate device, by manually<br />

enter<strong>in</strong>g their correspond<strong>in</strong>g numeric code, or by text search on a<br />

metadata field. The query then retrieves all correspond<strong>in</strong>g contextual<br />

data stored <strong>in</strong> the system. MetaBar is <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to a set of external<br />

tools with direct access from the web <strong>in</strong>terface.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terpolation of physical and chemical parameters such as temperature,<br />

nitrate, phosphate, sal<strong>in</strong>ity, silicate, dissolved oxygen, oxygen<br />

saturation, apparent oxygen utilization and chlorophyll of a mar<strong>in</strong>e<br />

sampl<strong>in</strong>g site can be <strong>in</strong>itiated via the WOA05 data extractor of<br />

the megx.net portal. On the fly visualization of sampl<strong>in</strong>g sites on a<br />

world map can be performed us<strong>in</strong>g the Genes Mapserver (http://www.<br />

megx.net/gms). Furthermore, four export functions (Figure 2.1, step 6)<br />

are currently supported: (1) an export to KML to visualize sampl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sites <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g their contextual data <strong>in</strong> Google Earth R○ , (2) an export<br />

to GCDML [Kottmann et al., 2008] for report creation and for data<br />

exchange, (3) an export to a GSC compliant MIGS/MIMS/MIENS<br />

spreadsheet, and (4) an export as a structured comment for sequence<br />

data submission to the INSDC databases us<strong>in</strong>g the Sequ<strong>in</strong> tool (www.<br />

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Sequ<strong>in</strong>/<strong>in</strong>dex.html).<br />

MetaBar’s user management provides a “MetaBar adm<strong>in</strong>”, a “project<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>” and a “MetaBar user” mode. These modes depend on the role
