On May 11, we will gather
together to celebrate all the
wonderful accomplishments
of the 2009-10 League year.
One of the most noteworthy
items we’ll be celebrating is
that our Katharine Phelps
Lifetime Achievement Award
winner, Emily Anne Staples
Tuttle, has won the AJLI Mary Harriman Community Leadership Award.
The award, named after the founder of the Junior League Movement
and one of the Association’s most prestigious awards, recognizes a
Junior League member whose ability to motivate volunteers, overcome
challenges and create positive change provides inspiration to women
everywhere.
The Junior League of Minneapolis has never before had a member
win this national award. Emily Anne received this award on April 16 at
a luncheon at the AJLI conference in Orlando, Florida. The luncheon
was sponsored by Talbots and Emily Anne was honored in front of an
audience of over 1,000 Junior League annual conference attendees.
Some of Emily Anne’s greatest accomplishments will be highlighted
at the May General Meeting. In addition to her role as a leader of the
Junior League of Minneapolis, Emily Anne has been a Minnesota
State Senator, a Hennepin County Commissioner and an advisor to
former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura. She was also instrumental
in organizing the first Minnesota Women’s Political Caucus, the first
voluntarism, developing
the potential of women and
improving the community
through the effective action and
leadership of trained volunteers.
Its purpose is exclusively
educational and charitable.
Reach Out Statement
The Junior League of
Minneapolis reaches out to
women of all races, religions,
and national origins who
demonstrate an interest in and
commitment to voluntarism.
April showers bring not only May flowers,
but also the end of the 2009-10 JLM
year. Many of you have asked me if I
am sad that my Presidential year will
be ending soon. To be honest with
you, it doesn’t feel like the end at all;
in fact, it feels like we are in full bloom
and ready to blossom! It has truly been
a spectacular year filled with so many
accomplishments and triumphs for our
organization.
If you imagine the JLM as a flower
garden, we were bountiful this year. Our
garden was filled with a diverse planting,
and every seedling was nurtured with
the love and attention it needed to bloom
and thrive. When we started our year,
one would never have imagined that our
garden would produce:
• The JLM’s first national AJLI Mary
Harriman Community Leadership Award
winner, Emily Anne Staples Tuttle
• A new corporate sponsorship program
bringing on board wonderful partners
such as Nordstrom, Minnesota Monthly,
Eminent Design and Metro Magazine
• Two amazing new projects – Backpack
Buddies and Between the Lines – which
both received incredible support from
our members and the community
• Successful fundraising events and a
diversified fundraising portfolio to bring in
more dollars to support our mission
• New grants from Pentair Foundation and
Thank you to our
corporate sponsors:
• PLATINUM •
Nordstrom
Metro Magazine
• GOLD •
• SILVER •
Eminent Interior Design
General Mills to support our projects
• A much more visible JLM brand through
publicity in local newspapers, magazines
and television as well as the use of
social networking websites, Facebook
and LinkedIn
• Our user-friendly new website and
management tool for our members
And the list could go on…
Our garden was cultivated and
grew because of the hard work,
thoughtfulness, stewardship and passion
of our JLM members and incredible
Active and Sustainer leadership teams.
It brings tears to my eyes when I think
of our fearless leaders who have been
“in motion” all year long working to fulfill
our mission. I am so proud, humbled
and privileged to have been a part of this
amazing year.
More so, I am honored to be passing the
Presidential gavel to an incredibly gifted
and talented woman and dear friend
of mine, Sarah Borchers. Sarah has
a spectacular vision for the upcoming
years and I am confident our JLM garden
will be even bigger and better because of
her leadership!
Thank you all from the bottom of my
heart for being a part of our Mission in
Motion this year!
With love, respect, gratitude and best
wishes always,
• The Board reviewed the membership
surveys for content and timing for
distribution to membership.
• The Board discussed recommended
changes for Programs and
Arrangements for the 2010-11 year.
• The Board reviewed the financial
report again. JLM is still on track with
our budget.
• The Board discussed details for
recognizing Emily Anne Staples Tuttle
as the 2010 winner of the prestigious
AJLI Mary Harriman award.
• From the mom of the Girl Scout who still talks about what she learned at a
Kids in the Kitchen event two years ago
• From the shopkeeper who tells you how he saw an increase in new
business during the Shop, Save, Share Card promotion
• From a New Member who expresses how much more connected she feels
to her new community after being transplanted to Minneapolis from the coast
• From your neighbors, family and friends when they see the amazing
coverage we have received this year in the press, from an entire spread in
the Star Tribune for Boots & Bling to the poignant story on WCCO TV about
an incarcerated mom reading to her kids as part of our new Between the
Lines project
These are the stories that feed our souls. These stories are only possible
because of the incredible work our Junior League of Minneapolis members
put forth each year. The 2009-10 year was no different; members built upon
the success of existing projects, events and fundraisers while exploring
new avenues for meeting our mission. Thank you to Anna Lyon, our 2009-
10 President, as well as to the Board of Directors, Chairs, leaders and
every single member-at-large for embracing our Mission in Motion this
year!
In keeping with a great tradition, the 2010-11 League year beginning June
1, 2010 will have members building on our strong foundation while creating
new solutions to meet our changing membership demographics and
interests and community gaps.
• In the community, we will continue to serve women and children through
Between the Lines, Kids in the Kitchen, LeagueAires, Backpack Buddies
and Helping Hands, through which we’ll join forces with Read Indeed as we
transition our Books 4 Kids program.
• Our fundraisers will include American Girl, One Night Fundraiser,
Special Events, Shop, Save, Share Card and Donor Relations,
all of which will be generating success off of previous years’
accomplishments.
• Our members, the source of everything, will enjoy our terrific
Leadership & Lattes program, the community roundtables,
the mentorship program and other training and networking
opportunities.
With your help, the 2010-11 League year will generate more
amazing, fulfilling stories that remind us that our volunteer life
enriches our community and ourselves in ways we can only begin
to imagine. Thank you for remembering and connecting with our
mission of developing the potential of women, improving our
community, and promoting voluntarism through effective action. I
look forward to volunteering with you in the new League year!
Backpack Buddies’ First
Year a Success
Katie Hollerman, Backpack Buddies
Co-Chair | backpackbuddies@jlminneapolis.org
As the League year wraps up
and the projects slow down, it is
with great pride that Backpack
Buddies reflects on its inaugural
year. We have served 115
first graders at Andersen
Open Elementary School in
Minneapolis over 35,000 meals,
which translates into over
38,000 pounds of food! We also
successfully obtained $10,000
in grant money from General
Mills and Pentair, companies
that recognized the importance
of our project and mission. The
committee held two successful
community food drives this
year. Thanks to everyone who
came out and supported our
project. As we look forward to
next year, we are gearing up to
serve twice as many students
and further our mission of
eliminating childhood hunger.
The Junior League of Minneapolis is proud
to recognize our 2010 Wallin Scholarship
Recipient, Phoebe Lynn Chastain from
Southwest High School. Phoebe has been an
active volunteer throughout her high school career,
primarily through the Planned Parenthood Teen Council. The Teen Council
is a peer education group that presents in classrooms and the community on
reproductive health topics such as birth control, healthy relationships, puberty
and HIV prevention. Through the Teen Council program, Phoebe has visited
twelve schools in the Twin Cities and has taught in more than fifty classrooms.
This year alone, she has donated nearly 300 hours of her time to the Teen
Council and her community to improve the lives of people her age.
In March, Phoebe was chosen to attend the One Voice Summit in Washington,
D.C., sponsored by SIECUS, the Sierra Club, Advocates for Youth and
Americans for an Informed Democracy. During the summit she learned about
reproductive health and sustainability and had the opportunity to lobby at
the Capitol. Phoebe is a passionate activist, is excited about advocating for
women’s health and feels she is just beginning. She will be attending Carleton
College in the fall where she hopes to study Political Science and Women’s/
Gender Studies. Phoebe is looking forward to being involved with the campus
organizations, including the campus radio station, theatre, as well as playing
Ultimate Frisbee.
Congratulations, Phoebe Chastain!
Rob Zeaske joins Junior League of Minneapolis Community Advisory Board
Rachel LaTour, VP Community | community@jlminneapolis.org
The 2009-10 Board of Directors is proud to announce that Rob Zeaske, Executive
Director of Second Harvest Heartland, will be joining the Community Advisory Board
for the next League year. Rob joins a talented and well versed advisory board already
in place including Sandy Vargas from The Minneapolis Foundation, Randi Yoder from
United Way, Patrick Smith from Wells Fargo, Noelle Hawton from Tunheim Partners,
and Karla Ekdahl, community activist.
As Executive Director, Rob Zeaske has overall responsibility for leadership, planning
and management of Second Harvest Heartland. Rob is a hopeful voice intent on
finding more efficient and innovative ways to help neighbors in need. “We in hunger
relief can see the finish line,” Rob likes to say. “In Minnesota, ending hunger need
not be a coin-in-a-fountain-wish. I am hopeful because, although the root causes of
poverty are complex, feeding a neighbor isn’t. We can do this.”
Rob’s experience speaks for itself. He’s directed important organizations like Bostonbased
Jumpstart, which is nationally recognized for preparing schoolchildren for success and Mercy Corps, where
he served as Harvard Business School Service Leadership fellow.
Rob holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School and a BA in political science from Stanford University. He lives
Girlfriends, Growth and Gratitude
Kathleen Watson, LeagueAire | leagueaires@jlminneapolis.org
Spring seems to have truly sprung. We’re raking yards,
planting flowers, and generally preparing for the growth
and greenery of summer.
However, the beginning of these short-but-blissful warm
months signals the end of the LeagueAires’ trouping
season. That means May is a time of mixed emotions
for us. Although each of us has contact information
for the whole group, the very busy-ness of summer
means it will be more challenging to stay in touch with
our singing sisters and enjoy their company. It also
means that we won’t get our weekly fix of bright faces
at the senior residences, nursing homes, workshops for
developmentally disabled adults and inner-city schools
where we perform.
While we’ll certainly miss connecting with our audiences,
we’re grateful for the chance to have performed for
literally thousands of people during this trouping season
We give of our time and talent, and our audiences give
of their openness and appreciation for what we offer. It
humbles us to hear comments and stories like these:
“The music selection was great, the sing-along songs
were perfect...I can’t think of anything you could do to
better meet the needs of our residents.”
May 2010
“LOVED the
performance!! No
need to look for
ways to do better.”
“With [your] natural motherly and caring
instincts, you made quite an impression on the residents
as you went out to sing with them and get them
involved.”
“You can’t help but smile by just looking at them!”
“Wonderful as always! Great enthusiasm.”
“The performance was great. I really appreciate
how comfortable and friendly you all are around
[Midwest Special Services’] clients.”
“You made a wonderful difference in the lives of
all the residents.”
So, as we get ready to put our sparkly vests
away until next January, we’re sad to be done for
this season, delighted to have brought sunshine
into so many lives, and grateful for the chance to
do good with the abilities we’ve been given.
Life is good.
Books 4 Kids – Year Six
Mary Mathiowetz, Books 4 Kids Chair | books4kids@jlminneapolis.org
A huge shout out to the entire Books 4 Kids team who started working in April of 2009 and to the New Members who
joined the committee in November. Your efforts and passion made this year a success!
This year, Books 4 Kids collected and distributed over 43,000 books collected from hundreds of books drives to 15
organizations. We raised awareness in our community not only around Books 4 kids but also for JLM. We collected
from many member book drives, Books 4 Bowling, 27 organizations, and seven schools.
Many thanks to everyone who supported the team by hosting book drives, sorting and delivering books, funding the
project and helping out with all that goes on behind the scenes. A special thanks to:
• Our VPs Suzie Wilmot and Rachel LaTour, who worked together to help us throughout the
year
• Our Sustainer rep, Kris Newcomer, for her advice and guidance
• Elizabeth Monico, for working with Wendy in helping us secure collection sites
• Deb Johnson, for helping the committee in numerous ways
You will be hearing more about the Books 4 Kids program transition to Read Indeed in the
days to come. We are excited to continue to be involved in getting books into the hands of
kids who need them.
Kids in the Kitchen Year-End Recap
Charlotte Lozier, Kids in the Kitchen Chair | kidsinthekitchen@jlminneapolis.org
The Kids in the Kitchen committee is wrapping up a
great year with four events under our belt and two
events remaining. This past year has included some
amazing opportunities to engage children in the Twin
Cities community in learning the benefits of healthy
living and help address the issue of
childhood obesity.
In September, we partnered with
Bolder Options, a one-to-one youth
mentoring program for children ages
10-14. At this event, we set up food
stations to teach the children how to
read labels and make healthy food
decisions. We also invited a trainer
from Lifetime Fitness who demonstrated fun exercises
kids can do during commercial breaks of their favorite
TV shows. Our November event took place at the Boys
and Girls Club.
In December, we again partnered with Bolder Options
and taught kids healthy recipes using leftover turkey
May 2010
from Thanksgiving. We also played a spin-off of
Family Feud, “Kitchen Feud.” This visit also included a
presentation from dentists on how kids can keep their
teeth clean.
In February we teamed up with Big
Brothers Big Sisters and hosted a
“heart healthy” event themed around
Valentine’s Day. Children were able
to visit different stations to learn
about heart healthy foods while
playing games.
We are planning two more events!
Our remaining events include an
Earth Day-themed event planned
by our New Members on April 26 at Expo Elementary
School. Our last event is May 4 at Green Central
Park Elementary School. Please look online for shift
opportunities for these events – we’d love to see you
there!
It was Simply the Best!
Thank you JLM!
Jenna Schultz, Gifts & Grants Director | specialevents@jlminneapolis.org
The Gifts & Grants Committee would like to take the opportunity to express our thanks to everyone who has so
graciously given to the Annual Fund throughout the year through personal donations, in-kind donations as well as
company match donations. Because of your generosity, we have raised approximately $35,000 to date. We couldn’t
have done it without you!
The Annual Fund is vital in supporting our projects and mission in the years to come and helps sustain our
organization. It is only through the generous support of our members through both time and financial contributions
that JLM continues to support our community and improve the lives of women and children living in our community.
SEGG thanks you!
(SEGG) during the 2009-10 JLM year. Whether
you purchased a ticket or volunteered your time
at one of these events, it all made a difference.
Thank you!
Because of your generosity, SEGG exceeded its
Sustainer President’s Remarks
A recent conversation with Emeritus Joan Warner . . .
Joan Warner joined the JLM in 1957 and became a Sustainer in
1962. She is in her 90’s now. She has happy memories about her
League membership and has close friends from those years. Joan
fondly remembers her work with the blind (JLM project) to teach
children to bowl on Saturday mornings at the Lake Street and
Hennepin Avenue Bowling Alley. She says she didn’t even know
how to bowl before that! Now, her eyesight is poor and she doesn’t get to do all that
she used to do. However, she keeps busy with two little dogs and a friend who comes
to her apartment to read her mail to her everyday. Even back then, JLM volunteers
stretched themselves and honed their skills to accomplish the tasks at hand!
While serving as JLM Sustainer President this past year, I have witnessed numerous
displays of personal and collective outreach efforts and acts of kindness and
friendship from our JLM volunteer friends. From a committed Sustainer Management
Board (comprised of 37 Sustainer Program Planners and Event Chairs, 43 Sustainer
Reps to the Active Board and Committees, and the 6 Sustainer Executive Committee)
to the hardworking Actives, New Members and Sustainers at-large who have rolled
up their sleeves to work to better our organization and Minneapolis community. We’ve
truly been “Members in Motion” all year long to fulfill our “Mission in Motion” theme.
It ever reinforces my belief that, together, we do make a difference!
Come celebrate with me at the May events!
