MISSION
The Junior League of Minneapolis
is an organization of women committed
to promoting voluntarism,
developing the potential of women,
and improving the community
through the effective action and
leadership of trained volunteers. Its
purpose is exclusively educational
and charitable.
REACH OUT STATEMENT
The Junior League of Minneapolis
reaches out to women of all races,
religions, and national origins who
demonstrate an interest in and
committment to voluntarism.
April showers not only bring May flowers, but also the conclusion
of the Junior League of Minneapolis year. And what a year it
has been Celebrating 85 Years of Service!
You, the women of the JLM, have accomplished so much. There are
the quantifiable activities … hours volunteered, members mentored,
dollars raised, lives touched in our community. But there are also the
qualitative aspects … membership energy built, training received,
friendships shared. What an amazing group of women to celebrate!
The Junior League of Minneapolis, as an organization, has also
accomplished much. We are now settled into new headquarters at The
Woman’s Club of Minneapolis. We have revised and updated our
Bylaws and Standing Rules. We have evolved our project and fundraiser
portfolios building on our learning and continuing to seek ways to improve our community. We
have grown our membership. What exciting events to celebrate!
Our Annual Meeting on May 12 at The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis will serve as our
opportunity to celebrate all of these accomplishments, as well as recognize our annual award
winners and officially pass the gavel to our 2009-10 leadership. As the conclusion to our 85 th
anniversary year, we will also take a moment to Celebrate a Toast to the Future of the Junior League
of Minneapolis. I hope you will all participate in this wonderful evening.
Before I close this last letter as JLM President, please allow me to share my gratitude.
Thank you to …
Our talented 2008-09 Board of Directors and the many women who served in leadership
roles throughout the year,
Becky Odland, Sustainer President, and our wise sustainers who served as advisors
officially and unofficially,
Each active member for your commitment to furthering our mission, and
Our new members for the wonderful energy that you brought to our League.
The JLM is lucky to have Anna Lyon as our next President with a strong 2009-10 Board of
Directors. These women are going to bring terrific energy to the continued pursuit of our
mission – promoting voluntarism, developing women and improving our community!
Last May I wrote in the MINI, “I hope that you are as excited about the future of the Junior
League of Minneapolis as I am.” I continue to maintain that sentiment today and look forward
with enthusiasm to all the League has to offer our members and our Minneapolis community in
the years ahead!
Thank you for a tremendous year!
THE MISSION FOR 2009-2010
By Anna Lyon, President 2009-2010
What a wonderful year we have had Celebrating 85 Years of The Junior League of
Minneapolis! We have been inspired in so many ways – Celebrating our Past,
Celebrating our Current Impact in the community and Celebrating the Women of the
JLM by hearing their unique stories.
Thank you to the leadership of Emily, current Board of Director members and Chairs,
and countless Active and Sustainer members who have orchestrated a special year
honoring our 85 years of service to the Minneapolis communities.
The 2009-10 JLM year will continue to build on our successes and momentum from
this year and will put our Mission into Motion, our theme for the upcoming year. The JLM
is committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and
improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained
volunteers. Each of one of our member’s philanthropic efforts reflects our passion and
commitment for our mission. When we put our Mission in Motion, everyone benefits!
You – Volunteering with the JLM develops your personal and professional skills,
creates new opportunities for leadership and connects you in a variety of ways
to our community.
Your Community – Your donations of skills, time, and resources make an impact
every day to countless people.
Junior League of Minneapolis – Committing to put our Mission in Motion will help
broaden our membership and improve our communities in exciting ways!
Our mission will be more visible and exciting than ever this year! On the project front,
we will work together to create, plan and implement three incredibly exciting projects –
Backpacks 4 Kids, Between the Lines and Reading Circles. Training our volunteers and
leaders will be prevalent as we will roll out a whole new JLM University training
program – including enhanced leadership training as we kick off new committees and
placements. In addition, we will launch a new monthly series open to all membership
called Lattes & Leadership that will explore leadership trends in our community and
how we connect that to our mission. Lastly, we will refine and introduce new fundraising
opportunities to be strategic and purposeful in the way we fundraise for our projects.
Clearly, our leadership, members, and sustainers will be in Motion!
Please join me and the incoming Leadership team in putting our Mission into Motion – it
promises to be a year full of building new relationships, impacting our community,
developing your potential as a leader – all while having a fun time doing it together!
85 LEAGUERS: ANNA LYON
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AS A WAY OF LIFE
By Leah Bain Maki, External Communications Chair
FUN FACTS
Family: Husband Chris, Daughter Petra (4 1/2) and Golden Retriever,
Fletcher
Year joined the league: 1999
Advice for new members: “Your Junior League membership is a marathon, not a sprint -
pace yourself for all the amazing things that will come when
you are able to enjoy the journey!”
Anna’s quirks: “I love internet shopping, have a habit of staying up into the
wee hours of the night and feel like the only person in the
world who doesn't have a Facebook page!
Education: Luther College, graduated in 1995
Favorite quote: “The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The
tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.” - Benjamin Mays
Anna Lyon’s strong commitment and passion for the JLM and the women who make up our membership are evident in all
she does. Over Anna Lyon’s Junior League career she has been actively involved in all three pillars of the League – Fundraising,
Membership & Community. Her past placement history includes leadership positions such as Winter Market Chair, Helping
Hands Chair, Transfer Committee Chair, VP of Membership, Placement Advisor, and the list goes on! Her most memorable
moment within the League was during her 4 ½ year involvement with Winter Market where she volunteered as an assistant to
Andrew Zimmern when he was doing cooking demonstrations at one of the first events. “I remember clear as day him telling
a group of us that his goal was to have his own TV show talking about bizarre and weird foods throughout the world and how
he someday wanted to be famous like Rachel Ray. That was the same year he was awarded our Community Partner of the Year
award,” said Anna Lyon. “Now he IS a celebrity and his show is a mega-hit - even though sometimes I can’t watch his show
because it grosses me out!”
In addition to her commitment to the League, Anna is also very involved in other organizations. She is a founding member of the
United Way Women’s Leadership Council, a patron supporter of the Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery, a parent volunteer at
St. David’s preschool and a former board member of the Jungle Theater. “Community involvement is a way of life for me and
my family,” states Anna.
Anna’s passion doesn’t stop with her community involvement; she is equally passionate about her career and her family. For the
last 9 years, she has worked as the Global Accounts Sales Manager for an audio/web conferencing company. She also enjoys
wearing her hat as mother and wife. “I enjoy spending every free moment I have with my husband Chris and daughter Petra -
we enjoy doing everything together as a family,” said Anna Lyon. “We love to travel, ski, play golf, and our current obsession is
playing family Uno!”
Next year, Anna will be President of the JLM. “The League has given me so much more than I ever anticipated! I walked into
this organization as a young naïve newlywed looking to do some volunteering and 9 years later I am a working mother getting
ready to lead one of the most well-known women’s organizations in the country. I have been mentored, nurtured, supported,
encouraged, developed, befriended, trained, responsible for large events and deliverables, and the list could go on. Most of all,
I have learned how important it is to be a role model for my daughter, our community and our organization. I am so proud to
be a JLM member and can only hope that someday I can give a quarter back of what has given to me.”
TRANSFERS EXPLORE A NEW FASHION STYLING CONCEPT
AND ENJOY A FABULOUS WINE-TASTING SOIRÉE!
Transfer member Kristine Jessen and committee
members Elizabeth Kong and Becky Brown
at Corset styling.
By Becky Brown, Transfer Committee Chair
On Saturday March 14, our transfer group met at Corset Styling’s new boutique in
Hopkins to hear about the latest fashion trends and styling tips. We all had a fun
time trying on some of the new spring fashions and jewelry. Several of us even got a
jumpstart on our spring wardrobe updating!
You could say March went out with a blast this year as over 40 transfers, committee
members, and incoming board members along with spouses/dates/friends gathered
at the lovely home of Sustainer Advisor Leslie Niemoeller and her husband David
for a fabulous evening of good food and wine to taste and great conversation.
Congratulations to transfer member Caroline Eachus and her husband Brian for
bringing the white that received the highest taster rating! Congratulation also goes out to
President-Elect Anna Lyon and husband Chris for bringing the highest-rated red wine.
As the League year winds down, the transfer group continues to be active. April will be
a month of volunteering as several transfers will be participating in events including
Feed My Starving Children, Second Harvest Ball and Ever After Gowns. A happy hour
is also planned for Stella’s Fish Café on April 30 at 5:30pm. In May, we will wrap up the year with an end-of-year gathering to
celebrate all of our transfers and the great year we’ve had (date TBD).
You can expect to see much more of our talented transfers next year!
HIGHLIGHTING THE SISTER TEAM:
EMILY SERRANO AND SARAH HANSON
By Michelle Fettig, New Member Committee
Emily Serrano and Sarah Hanson joined the Junior League
of Minneapolis this year together, thanks to Geri Datus-
Ward. Emily works at Target in Product Sourcing and is
married to Joe. Sarah works for Guy Carpenter doing
reinsurance accounting and claims. They are both doing
amazing things for the Junior League this year and learning a
lot about the community. Some of their achievements include
volunteering at the Crisis Nursery, Impact Day, Feed My
Starving Children, and Kids in the Kitchen. Sarah highlighted
the inspirational stories she’s heard from League members at
some of the general meetings, as being some of the
most profoundly inspiring women in the community.
Both Sarah and Emily are happy to meet so many fascinating
League members and new friends through socials,
volunteering, and meetings.
OPEN LETTER TO NEW MEMBERS
By Pat Fleet, Sustainer Rep to New Member Committee
Congratulations to the JLM New Members who will become Actives at the May general
meeting! We hope you enjoyed this year. Led by excellent chair, Rachel Smith, the committee
members all worked hard getting to know you! Our months together were full of activity:
meeting new people, making new friends, organizing calendars, maneuvering through the JLM
website, learning the League structure, and, we hope, developing pride in our organization
celebrating 85 years of service in Minneapolis!
The colorful new member advisors agreed that you are an outstanding class, and raved about
your commitment to attend meetings, trainings, socials, fundraisers, and project shifts. You
jumped right into committee placements during the second part of the year. Many of you
attended the Placement Fair to help determine the best fit for your first Active year. During your
long Junior League life ahead, we hope you have warm, fulfilling experiences in a variety of
positions, and develop in leadership roles. The JLM will train you, and members will give
support; we know you will do wonderful things. We will closely follow your successes!
Personally, it’s been a joy to serve as Sustainer Rep to the organized, fun-loving, energetic New
Member committee. Thank you to Rachel Smith for leading us, to all committee members for
your devotion to make “It All Begins With Your First Year” a positive first impression, and to
Stephanie Ruppert for being our gracious committee
meeting hostess. Congratulations and thank you to those
who will carry over their passion into 2009-10, including
Stephanie Ruppert, New Member chair, and Erin Schultz,
New Member Recruiter.
Finally, please reach out to your friends and colleagues
who would also benefit from membership in the Junior
League. Encourage them to join us as New Members next
year! There is more fun ahead and always more good work
to be done in the community.

85 LEAGUERS: ANNIE GORMAN
GIRL ON THE GO
By Gail Ballantyne, Transfer Member
BIRTH
ANNOUNCEMENT
FUN FACTS
Annie Gorman on right
Hometown: Edina
Education: University of Iowa, BS in
Finance
Joined JLM: 2005
Exercise: Training for a triathlon
Favorite
Restaurants: Lucia’s and Bar Lurcat
Annie Gorman keeps busy with a variety of activities—her skills range from
financial analysis to underwater exploration. Right now, the Junior League benefits
from her work as chair of Helping Hands. That involves identifying diverse, local
organizations most in need of JLM assistance and coordinating Impact Day and other
done-in-a-day projects.
“The League is a really great outlet for meeting people, meeting inspirational women
and helping the community,” she says. “I think my committee is very enthusiastic and
passionate about coming up with new organizations, events, and ideas.”
This year’s Impact Day offered two volunteer events for members and was especially
meaningful to partner organizations because of the tough economy. “It makes you
proud to be a part of the Junior League, to see everyone band together to support our
community,” Annie says of the unprecedented participation. She has also worked on
Special Events, Gifts and Grants (SEGG) Committee and looks forward to serving on
Nominating Committee next year.
“It’s a really easy way for you to get outside of your comfort zone,” Annie says of her
League experience so far. “It’s a good way to get leadership experience in nonthreatening
way.” She credits the Junior League with providing balance against her work
and school commitments.
As a treasury analyst at Wells Fargo, Annie currently examines information around
the recent Wachovia merger worth billions of dollars and is also working on her MBA
part-time at St. Thomas.
“The theme of this year for me has been beyond busy, but it’s been worth it,” she adds.
In her limited free time, Annie enjoys exploring new restaurants with friends. During the
summer, she sails and water skis at her family’s cabin up north. Annie also enjoys
checking out the scenery under the water during warm-weather getaways and became
SCUBA certified when she was just 13 years old. She’s also training for her first triathlon
this summer. “I like the challenge of a race,” Annie says.
No matter how she places, one thing is for sure. When it comes to Annie’s involvement
in the community and the JLM, there’s no slowing down.
APRIL BIRTHDAYS
ATTENDING THE AJLI ODI
LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
By Leah Maki, Rafina Larsen, Lorie Gardner, Suzie Wilmot
In March 2009, we (Leah Maki, Rafina Larsen,
Lorie Gardner and Suzie Wilmot) attended the
Association of Junior League International’s (AJLI)
Organizational Development Institute (ODI)
Leadership Conference in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. The goal of the conference was to teach
fellow Leaguers how to achieve community impact
and identify and build powerful community
projects in our Leagues. This was taught through a
series of educational training meetings in four key
tracks: membership development, fundraising, nominating and projects.
One piece of the curriculum really focused on teaching us, as Leagues, to focus first on our fellow
members as our primary audience and how this focus really goes back to our mission, or what
ODI taught as PDI.
Promoting Voluntarism
Developing the Potential of Women
Improving the Community through the Effective Action and Leadership of Trained Volunteers
We also discovered great ideas, inspirations and tools in each of the four educational tracks that
we attended.
“What I learned at AJLI’s ODI is that we need to promote the JLM impact and we do not always
do the best job of identifying and promoting the issues, results and impact of our projects and
services, even though we’ve been making a significant impact on the Minneapolis community
for over 85 years,” said Suzie Wilmot. “As VP Projects in 2009-2010 I hope that we can continue
to provide our membership with the results of their community involvement in the Junior
League of Minneapolis.”
Rafina Larsen said, “Attending ODI was such a rewarding experience. I attended the nominating
track and found we are light years ahead of many Leagues in our process but are not utilizing all
the recommendations from AJLI. I’ve met with Meleah Follen, next year’s Nominating Chair,
and have shared my ideas of processes we can improve upon and start implementing right
away.”
“In the fundraising track, Leagues BIG and small were all focused on how to make more money
and sharing their success stories as well as opportunities for improvement. ODI was an
exceptional opportunity for me to gain more knowledge to be a smarter VP of Fundraising in a
challenging economic climate and to have a successful 2009-2010 year,” said Lorie Gardner.
“I attended the membership track of the conference and the main message reiterated was on
creating lifelong members of the Junior League and the tools, programs and trainings we need
to implement in order to do this. I know the information I learned will be instrumental in my
role as the VP of Marketing; in the messages, events, tools, etc. that we use to reach members at
every stage in their Junior League career,” said Leah Maki.
We’d like to say thank you to the Board of Directors and JLM membership for the opportunity
to attend the ODI Leadership Conference and for the commitment to the development of
women. We encourage all JLM members to apply to attend ODI at some time in their Junior
League careers; it is truly an inspiring experience.
85 LEAGUERS: SONAL PHILIP
GETTING INVOLVED AND GETTING CONNECTED
By Sarah Broughton, Internal Communications Committee
FUN FACTS
Joined JLM: Fall 2008 (New Member)
Family: Betsen (husband) and Kona (dog)
Moved to Minneapolis: May 2008
Education: University of Virginia, Richmond; George Washington
University Law School
Occupation: Project Manager in the legal technology industry
Thoughts on Minnesota
winters: “this isn’t so bad.”
All arrows pointed to Minnesota for
Sonal and Betsen last spring. With a
job offer from Target for Betsen and an
Eden Prairie company buying Sonal’s
Houston-based company it was time to
move north. Sonal credits the timing of
the move to help ease into the northern
climate.
Moving in May allowed a nice reprieve
from already hot temps in Texas while
entering Minnesota in a very tolerable time.
Living in Edina offers easy access to the
lakes for running and biking and a fenced
in back yard for Kona. The pleasant summer helped ease the Philips into the winter.
They even joined an outdoor broomball league this past winter which grants instant
residency status to any new Minnesotan.
Back in Texas, many of Sonal’s friends were joining the Junior League. Wanting to
meet women and get involved in the community led Sonal to find the Minneapolis
chapter within a few months of moving. As a New Member this past year, she has
really enjoyed getting her feet on the ground with a lot of new member social
interaction and planning a new member event with Bolder Options. She has also
volunteered at the Breakfast with Santa event, Eve of the Eve, the Crisis Nursery,
and Kids in the Kitchen. Getting involved directly with kids and the community has
helped Sonal feel like she’s “actually done something” to improve the community.
The spring and summer hold fun travel plans and visits from family ready to brave
the northland. With the coming new League year, Sonal looks forward to getting
experience in new areas and seeing how the JLM touches the community. By getting
involved in the Junior League of Minneapolis Sonal is getting more connected to her
new home.

SMILES ON KIDS FACES IS A MASTERCARD MOMENT!
By Sue Patow, Books 4 Kids Chair
Thanks to your generosity and time Books 4 Kids has once again been a great success! 56,394 books
have been collected and 35,130* have been distributed to children from toddlers to grade 8. Thank
you for hosting book drives, cleaning out your closets and involving your friends, schools and workplaces
in the book drive. It truly was a success due to your support. The smiles on the kids faces as they selected
a book of their own-was more than a MasterCard moment!
The need, especially in these economic times, has been overwhelming. Seven new organizations were
added to the list of recipients this year. Schools and non-profit organizations are already filling out
applications for next year!
New this year, book collection started in the fall with school challenges and member-hosted holiday collections, enabling us to
start sorting and distributing books in mid-November. The last delivery will be April 27.
Reading Circles was strengthened as a part of B4K. Community response was overwhelming and many JLM volunteers spent
meaningful time with children of all ages in organized one-on-one or small group reading sessions. Reading Circles will be a new
project next year — sign up now to help children become lifelong readers.
Books 4 Kids would not be a success without the committee members’ commitment and dedication. They are truly awesome
women! I do want to highlight a few: Rebecca Thompson, who not only secured a donation of 19,000 books from General
Mills but also spearheaded the development of Reading Circles. She and Anna Olson worked with schools, community
organizations and JLM members to launch and grow the program throughout the year. Sarah Oehlerts and Katie Hetherington
were an awesome team: they identified recipient organizations and coordinated book sorting shifts and deliveries, often in their
own SUVs with Molly, Gavin and Ed! Sara Schmidt and her team initiated and coordinated the school challenges in the fall giving
us a head start on book collection. Mary Mathiowetz oversaw book collection and manned the spreadsheet of donors, keeping
us all on track and busy writing thank you
notes! Mary is the incoming chair of B4K
and I know she will continue the success
of the past five years. Karin Abel and the
New Members hosted a very successful
“Books 4 Bowling” event: 820 books
were collected, beating last year’s record!
I would also like to acknowledge the
generous support of the Beard Group
for providing free warehouse space
beginning in August and Two Men and a
Truck who provided the now-familiar
collection boxes and their trucks and
drivers to help with our biggest book
distributions.
On behalf of the recipients of your
generosity and the Books 4 Kids
committee, thank you once again for your
support. Start saving your books for the
Fall collection!
* Duplicate books from General Mills will be
distributed in the 2009-2010 book distribution
Community
THANK YOU FOR MAKING AN IMPACT
ON OUR COMMUNITY!
By Annie Gorman, Helping Hands Chair
As the JLM year comes to an end, I wanted to take a few minutes to thank each and
every one of you who decided to make an impact on our community through
volunteering at one or more of our Helping Hands events. We couldn’t have done it
without you!
Our goal this year was to organize impactful events and drives by connecting with past
projects and new organizations throughout the JLM year. Some of the past projects we
engaged were Cook for Kids events at the Crisis Nursery, an art supply drive for Free
Arts MN and events supporting CARE Partners and the Jeremiah Program. New
organizations ranged from painting porches at an Aeon Housing apartment complex,
childcare at YouthLink and the Tubman Alliance, and a Spring Fling at Passage
Community, a family housing division of Simpson Housing.
We also expanded Impact Day into two separate events this year as a way to celebrate our 85 th anniversary
through highlighting our presence and current impact on our community. We continued the success of last year
by bringing together nearly 100 JLMers at Bridging for furniture assembly and sorting household items. A
second event at Second Harvest Heartland was added, where 50 JLM members sorted over 12,000 pounds of
food for distribution to various shelters around the metro area.
Thanks again for your support and commitment to our community!
THE YEAR OF FIRST – KIDS IN THE KITCHEN
MAKES A DIFFERENCE
By Debbie McDowell, Kids in the Kitchen
Our New Member Event on March 17 was a huge success this year! For this year’s event, we partnered with Bolder Options, an
activity-based one-on-one youth mentoring program that focuses on running and biking, academic goal setting, and volunteerism
to build self-esteem and encourage healthy eating habits among 10-14 year olds.
We began the evening with a discussion on overall nutrition, focusing on each of the different food groups, followed by four
interactive ‘stations’ — make-your-own pizza, trail mix, and fruit kabobs and vegetable tasting — to illustrate how eating healthy can
taste good and be fun. While the pizzas were baking, the kids were able to paint their own recipe boxes (a few were quite the artists!).
Finally, we wrapped up the night with dinner (hot, steaming pizzas that they had made earlier), and surprised them with goodie bags
that they were very excited to take home with them.
The event was a success on many levels. Bolder Options was very impressed with the Junior League of Minneapolis and loved the
event. More importantly, though, was the positive response we received from the kids with some saying, “I didn’t know vegetables
could taste so good!” and “I really enjoyed the teamwork tonight!”. All of the New Members can agree that the best two words we
heard were “Thank You”. We wanted to represent the Junior League in a way that made a difference to these kids – even if for just
a few hours out of their day – and we did.
SONG, SERVICE AND THE SISTERHOOD
By Jacque Olson, LeagueAires Committee
I
wanted to express how much I have enjoyed our little visit on these pages each
month. During this time we have talked about the therapeutic and spiritual impact
of Song and the power of Service. Now, as we approach the final curtain, my own 4th
season, I hope you do not mind if I indulge in a bit of reflection.
A few months ago a friend emailed a whimsical video that evoked no small emotion. It
was this little animated frog singing “You’ve Got a Friend” from the delightful film,
“Toy Story”; its intent to embrace sisterly love. This was my reply to my friend.
Dear Sue, This was one of the songs we always sang for our children’s venues that first year I was in
LeagueAires. I will remember it most especially for the reason that, at the very onset of beginning
rehearsals, we lost our vivacious young chairman, Marnie Ruliffson (whom I did not yet thoroughly
know) in a tragic accident. She and her 12-year old son went down in a helicopter near Siren,
Wisconsin. Left behind was her husband of some 7 years and their precious three-year old daughter. Beyond the heartbreak at hand for all of our members,
I was particularly touched by my then “big sister”, who within her own sorrow, if you can imagine, was concerned about my reaction to this event and the
fact that it may have touched upon my own recent losses. After the initial grief and struggles, but not long after this occurrence we were in rehearsal one day
at Peace Presbyterian when without notice in walked this young woman’s husband, sister and the little girl, Jenny. They had come to pay their gratitude and
bring some pastries. They had chosen a time that, albeit we would all be together, would be a heart-wrenching exercise to execute. Just as the stunned
expressions took hold, our director/pianist began plunking out this wonderful little tune and one-by-one our voices took up. It was my first foray into the
world of this amazing group of women . . . and I will never forget it.
For me, one of the greatest insights of these past four years has been the incredible and overwhelming view of what goes on in the
lives of 66 women in the course of any given week. It is like life unfolding all at once before your very eyes. The ridiculous to
supreme. All joy and pride, heartbreak and
tragedy. All trials, broken dreams and despair.
All strength, resilience, faith and conviction.
We have witnessed it all and walked
the journeys. Hand to hand. Heart to heart.
It is the one remaining element, that of
Sisterhood. For after all else, it is this which
we Give to one another.
Thank you for coming here! Thank you to
all of you who have helped us fulfill our
mission. And, on a personal note, thank
you so much to those who brought me to
this “stage” and now this year have allowed
me to share these thoughts with you.
In the event that you saw us at the JLM
Placement Fair, please consider and be
welcome to our Community
Performance at Colonial Church of
Edina on April 28 at 7:00 PM. It is our
gift to all of you and always a great, fun
and spirited evening. One of undeniably
exuberant Song and the Sisterhood!
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: THE JLM AND
THE WALLIN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
By Sarah Borchers, VP of Community
Imagine you’re a senior in high school. You’ve achieved a 3.8 GPA and excellent ACT scores, you’re leading your school’s
Amnesty International Club, as well as participating in a wide variety of other community service organizations. You’ve
balanced all of these amazing accomplishments with your 20-hour a week work schedule, since the only way you are going to be
able to afford college is if you find a healthy scholarship as well as use every penny you generate at your job.
That is where the Junior League of
Minneapolis and the Wallin Scholarship
Program comes in. Each year, the Wallin
Scholarship Program supports deserving
students who might not otherwise attend
or graduate from college through
financial means. Wallin and the JLM joined
forces in 2003, and since that time, our
organization has been instrumental in the
collegiate success of many young women.
The JLM scholarship, which is $2000 for
four years for our annual recipient of the
award, is given to a young woman who
has demonstrated not only academic
rigor, but also a commitment to her
community through volunteerism.
For the 2009 recipient, the JLM Board
of Directors was given a select group of
women from which to choose, and we’re
awaiting word from Wallin about who
will receive the scholarship. In years past,
the winner has spoken at our May
General Meeting, and we’re hopeful that
this year’s recipient can join us on May 12
at the Woman’s Club. The stories these
young women tell about their pasts and
how hard they’ve worked to get into the
door of a college or university are
stirring. This is program of which the JLM
and all of its members can be proud.
A “HOPPING” SUCCESS
By Rebecca Spilman,
Bunny Brunch Committee
Natalia and Carmen, daughters of
League Member Jennifer Trujillo
Parents, grandparents and children alike
came together on Saturday April 4 at the
Golden Valley Country Club for the
Junior League of Minneapolis’ second
annual Bunny Brunch. A special thank you
goes out to the League members who
donated their tickets to allow a Make-A-
Wish family of seven to attend the Brunch.
It was a special morning for them.
The morning started off with the Easter
Bunny greeting the kids for a photo
opportunity while the little girls showed
off their new Easter dresses. As the
families moved into the ballroom they
helped themselves to a delicious buffet
breakfast of a variety of breakfast breads,
sliced fruit, eggs, sausage and waffle bar
with all of the toppings including
chocolate chips and whipped cream!
After the meal was over the children were
able to participate in a variety of activities
including face painting, craft making and
in an egg hunt, which proved to be the hit
of the morning. The children were
brimming with excitement while they
scooped up as many eggs as they could fit
into their baskets. Each child also received
a gift, which they were able to choose
themselves from the Tower of Toys.
Finally to end the morning five lucky
families won a prize drawing! Some of
the prizes included a birthday party for
eight little girls at the American Girl store
at the Mall of America, a photo session
for the entire family and an enormous
remote control car that a child of any
age would enjoy. As the families collected
all of their gifts, crafts and prizes they
left smiling, having spent a wonderful
spring morning.
Fundraising
ANNUAL FUND
By Emily Backstrom, 2008-2009 President
For 85 years, the Junior League of Minneapolis (JLM) has been an essential part of our
community. Founded in 1923 when a group of women decided to pool their energy, talents
and resources to address some of the most pressing needs of the community and make a positive
impact in Minneapolis, we continue to make a difference today. Times have changed, but the
women of the JLM still embrace the same values as that group of young women in 1923.
One of the first efforts of the JLM in 1923 was working with the Children’s Protective Society
(now Family and Children’s Service). JLM provided both volunteers and financial support to this
agency for more than 20 years. Our dedication and commitment in working with women and
children continues today.
This past year, our efforts ensured more than 50,000 books were distributed to young people
throughout the city. Girls at St. Louis Park Junior High School benefitted from monthly mentoring
with our members. Through our new project, Kids in the Kitchen, we encouraged healthy
nutrition and active lifestyle choices.
We also look ahead as we prepare to implement two new projects approved by our membership – one to alleviate weekend
hunger among children and their families and the other to encourage reading and engagement between incarcerated women and
their children.
We rely on our members to lend their passion, time and talent to make a difference. We rely on generous Annual Fund
contributions to make that difference possible!
If you have not yet made a gift, we hope you will do so before our May 31 year end. This has been a challenging year, but these
challenges make our work in the community even more important. Your support, at any level, is integral to ensuring our effective
impact in the Minneapolis community.
Those members whose total giving throughout the year totals $200 or more will be invited to the Donor Celebration Event on
June 9.
JLM Annual Author Event
Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Robert Alexander was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 23, 1952. For
nearly thirty years Robert Alexander has been traveling to Russia where
he has attended Leningrad State University and worked for the United States
Government. He is the author of the bestselling novels Rasputin’s Daughter, The
Kitchen Boy, and, now in paperback, The Romanov Bride. The author has used
many letters and other historical documents, with Ella’s own words, to give us a
feel for the real woman, the Grand Duchess Elisaveta. She came from a modest
background in Germany and moved to the opulent and excessive Russian Court.
This moving and realistic work will make a great book club selection.
Cost: Author presentation with lunch - $23, or without lunch - $8
Robert Alexander will be at lunch and available to discuss his works.
Hostesses: Marilyn Hoghaug and Dorothy Hautman.
The event is open to friends.
SUSTAINER PRESIDENT’S REMARKS
On a cold, blustery, gray afternoon in March, I stopped in at the Edina
Care Center to watch the LeagueAires perform to a mostly whitehaired,
wheelchair-bound audience. Some residents clapped hands
to tunes such as Dancing Queen and 76 Trombones. Several women
eagerly sang along to Hello Dolly. A few had
their eyes closed. One woman proclaimed
she was a former LeagueAire and one happy
gentleman found a dancing partner. The
LeagueAires brought musical sunshine and
joy to these senior citizens that afternoon and
we can be mighty proud of them!
I have witnessed many acts of kindness
and friendship from JLM members this year while serving as Sustainer president.
From a committed Sustainer Board, to the busy event planning committees, to the
hardworking Actives and New Members, to the stories of “85 Leaguers” - all attest to
the strength of our membership and being part of something
good that is greater than ourselves. I am overwhelmed and
thank you for this leadership experience. Celebrate with me
at the May events!
