MISSION
The Junior League of Minneapolis
is an organization of women committed
to promoting voluntarism,
developing the potential of women,
and improving the community
through the effective action and
leadership of trained volunteers. Its
purpose is exclusively educational
and charitable.
REACH OUT STATEMENT
The Junior League of Minneapolis
reaches out to women of all races,
religions, and national origins who
demonstrate an interest in and
committment to voluntarism.
‘Tis the season to celebrate! December is a time of
fellowship and festivity for the League. Holiday parties are
numerous and the calendar fills up quickly, but I hope you
will all consider joining your JLM friends at our December
Meeting & Holiday Party on December 9 at the Golden
Valley Country Club. We have changed the format this year
from a seated dinner to allow for more mixing and mingling.
Our “85 Leaguers” speaker is Marilyn Carlson Nelson (JLM
sustainer and Chairman of Carlson), who will share stories
from her recently published book “How We Lead Matters:
Reflections on a Life of Leadership.”
As we ring in the New Year celebrating at Eve of the Eve, we will turn our attention
to community issues in January. Helping Hands and members of the 85 th
Celebration Ad Hoc Committee have joined forces to bring us opportunities with
two community organizations – Bridging and Second Harvest – to come together as
a League and volunteer for Impact Day. I hope you will be able to volunteer your
time at either or both of the events planned. They promise to be a great opportunity
to build relationships with each other and to roll up our sleeves to help improve our
community.
New this year will be Community Issues Roundtable discussions which are being
organized for a number of Saturday mornings in January. These will be casual
opportunities for you to learn more about issues facing the Minneapolis community.
Outside subject matter experts will join us at the table to provide training and to
prompt engaging discussion. We hope that these roundtables will allow you to have
more information about community issues in advance of the new projects that Project
Development will be bringing to membership for vote in March.
Finally, for those who were not available to attend the November General
Membership Meeting, I want to make all members aware of the change in our work
with Gilda’s Club Twin Cities. I encourage you to read the article later in this
newsletter for more information.
Best wishes to you and your families for a joyful holiday season, a festive “Eve” and
a blessed 2009!
Warm regards,
BOARD NOTES by Sarah McLeod, Recording Secretary
• The board reviewed the JLM’s investment accounts which include the Community
Trust Fund, Reserves, Long-term Investments, and Endowment. Given recent
market volatility, funds will remain in their current cash equivalent and certificate of
deposit accounts. The board will revisit investments in early 2009.
• At the November General Membership Meeting, the Governing Documents Ad Hoc
committee brought forward six motions to update Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws,
and Standing Rules. All motions were approved by membership.
• Placement options for the New Member class were reviewed.
• The board discussed our relationship with Gilda’s Club Twin Cities (see article later in
MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW FOR A
JANUARY 2009 PROJECT IMPACT DAY!
TWO OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE BACK AND LEARN MORE
By Annie Gorman, Helping Hands Chair
As a part of the Junior League of Minneapolis’s 85 th anniversary celebration and
in keeping with the JLM mission to improve our Minneapolis community through
the effective action of volunteers, we are pleased to announce Impact Day is back!
This year, there will be two Project Impact Day opportunities. New Members, Actives
and Sustainers are all encouraged to participate. The January Project Impact Days
will be held in lieu of the January General Meeting (attendance will count toward
fulfilling a membership pillar).
On Tuesday, January 13 at 6:00 p.m., members are invited to make an impact at
Bridging in Bloomington. The mission of Bridging is to provide the economically
disadvantaged with a one-time gift of quality furniture and household items which
helps to stabilize and improve their lives. Bridging predicts that during 2008 they will
have served 6,000 families representing 20,000 individuals, half of those being
children under the age of 18. Nearly all the work done at Bridging is by volunteers.
On Saturday, January 17 at 9 a.m., members and their spouses, partners, friends and
children (over age 12 please) are invited to make an impact at Second Harvest
Heartland (SHH) in northeast Minneapolis. Second Harvest Heartland is the Upper
Midwest’s largest hunger-relief organization with a mission of ending hunger through
community partnerships. This year, SHH will deliver more than 41 million pounds
of food to its 1,000+ nonprofit partners who stock food shelves, soup kitchens,
homeless shelters, senior community centers and children’s after-school programs.
Both events will offer an opportunity to learn more about one of these amazing
nonprofit organizations that are addressing critical needs within our community. You
will work alongside fellow League members on a task or project that will enable
these organizations to move closer toward having a measurable impact with the
communities they serve. And the best part is that you will have fun!
There will be a potluck meal available at both events where members can socialize
and enjoy an assortment of food. We encourage you to wear your Project Impact
Day t-shirt that was distributed at last year’s event. Don’t know where it is or didn’t
get one? No worries! We encourage you to buy 85 th anniversary t-shirts at the
December General Meeting or online (the shirts will then be available for you at
Impact Day).
85 th registration is required in advance online. Look for additional details in the
upcoming Monday MINIs or on the web. For questions, please contact Annie Gorman
at annie.c.gorman@gmail.com.
GOD BLESS US EVERYONE
By Jacque Olson, LeagueAires Committee
As I write this, Thanksgiving is a mere
week away; my favorite holiday of the year.
I love all that it imparts and hope you all
were able to share this time with loved
ones, friends or those in need of a place
called Home.
By the time you actually read this,
Thanksgiving will have already given way
to cookie baking, merry-making,
Christmas cards, Christmas trees,
shopping, wrapping, packing and the
inevitable frantic pounding of your own
heart looking for a parking spot close to
the door, five minutes before close,
at Target, for whatever you’ve “got to
get”. Yes, it’s Christmas. Christmas.
Everywhere!
Of course, we all have our special
traditions. For years, one of the
LeagueAires’ was a Madrigal Dinner
beautifully produced by the Bemidji State
Choir under the masterful direction of
Paul Brandvik at the then Radisson South
Hotel. All done in resplendent period
costuming complete with a delightful
court jester of considerable talents, I might
add. The ballroom; transformed into an
old English theme. The menu; a simply
splendid meal of potato and leek potage,
roasted prime rib and “figgy pudding”.
In courses and choruses it came. Wassail!!
Wassail!!
At the end of all this merriment there
would be a magnificent performance of
Madrigal carols. And then, as a final
“note”, the choral court would slowly,
slowly file out of the dimly lit room
holding lighted candles and singing
“Silent Night” in heavenly tones. Until, at
last, you could not hear the faintest sound.
Tears would stream down my cheeks. I
would have reached that place in my
Christmas soul; the music having
transported me there.
Whatever your own traditions, I do so
wish you the same. Be it the bells of
Christmas or the Chanukah lights, may
the warmth and hope of this season
embrace you and illuminate its love within
your hearts and throughout your homes
and bring you Peace and Harmony.
85 LEAGUERS: SARAH MCLEOD
BRINGING OUT YOUR BEST
By Jillene Schwab, External Communications Committee
FUN FACTS
Joined the Junior League: 1996 in Nashville, 2001 transferred to the JLM
Family: Husband, Sandy, and three pet dogs (Emma,
Chaucer, Jelly Roll)
Profession: Ameriprise, Director of Business Development
and Management
Education: University of Virginia, B.S. in Commerce
League Connection: Sarah’s mother-in-law is in the Nashville League
Her Inspiration: Her older sister, an avid volunteer
Sarah McLeod has a knack for bringing out the best in things around
her. Over the last few years, she and her husband, Sandy, have worked
to restore their turn-of-the-century home in Uptown. Careful to maintain
the original architecture, they’ve steadily restored the house room by room,
transforming an old neglected structure into a charming home that is both
reflective of its original time period and enhanced with the personality of
its owners at the same time. The house has a natural liveliness about it,
something that is enhanced by her four-legged family members – Emma,
Chaucer and Jelly Roll. Three years ago, Sarah adopted a small black lab
that was abandoned in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The dog was
underweight and in need of a loving home. Today, that black lab – Jelly
Roll – is a very healthy, happy resident of Sarah’s home.
Since moving from Nashville to Minneapolis in 2001, Sarah has enjoyed
getting to know the city and its residents; she has a huge sense of gratitude
toward the JLM for making Minneapolis feel like home. Many of her
placements in the League have been membership-focused, but Sarah has found the League to be very flexible, offering variety
from year to year and the opportunity for members to shift gears and go from committee chairs to members at large. This year,
Sarah is serving on the Board of Directors as the Recording Secretary, an experience she describes as both challenging and
exciting.
Managing a demanding career and long hours at work with positions in the League can be quite a challenge. Sarah has learned that
with the right planning, she can accomplish anything. For new active members who are juggling life’s demands with their
volunteer work, Sarah offers the following insight:
Work will always ask for more of you, and it is easy to get completely consumed by its demands. But the League brings a healthy
balance to life, and volunteering offers incredible rewards – the knowledge that you have made a difference at the end of a day.
Volunteering requires that you give a part of yourself – and you learn more about yourself in the process.
Sarah, with her bright personality and commitment to the League, is certainly someone who brings out the best in people around
her. And it seems the League has returned the favor, giving her the opportunity to develop herself by using skills that she didn’t
know she had. The League has also helped Sarah develop a strong sense for why volunteerism is so important. If more people
had the same commitment to service that Sarah McLeod has, the world would be a better place.

BE A LEADER
By Rafina Larsen, Nominating Committee Chair
The Nominating Committee has been hard at work placing the 2009/2010 Board
of Directors and Nominating Chair. These positions will be announced at the
December 9 General Meeting. Also at that meeting, members will vote on the
Nominating Slate for next year. The Nominating Committee is the only one that is
voted in by members. You should have received a sample ballot for the Nominating
Committee in the mail. If you are unable to make it to the December meeting, you
can vote by absentee ballot.
We’ve received a large number of Personal Applications and Straw Ballots but we
know not all of you have filled one out. Here is your second chance! The forms can
be found on the JLM website under the Nominating tab.
Use the Personal Application to nominate yourself. It’s your opportunity to tell the
nominating committee what you’re interested in next year. If you’ve already
completed one but changed your mind, fill out another one.
Use the Straw Ballot to nominate people you think have leadership potential. Use it
to let us know whom you would like to see in a Chair or Director position next year.
You can nominate more than one person for one or several positions.
Beginning in January, we will start placing all the chair and director positions. These
nominations will be announced at the March 10 General Meeting.
If you have any question about the nominating forms or process, contact Rafina
GILDA’S CLUB
ANNOUNCEMENT
By 2008-09 JLM Board of Directors
In 2007, the Junior League of
Minneapolis (JLM) entered into an
agreement with Gilda’s Club Twin
Cities to be the Founding Volunteer
Sponsor of Noogieland (the children’s
wing of the clubhouse). JLM’s
commitment included both volunteer
staffing, as well as a financial
commitment in the sum of $75,000.
The agreement was contingent on the
Gilda’s Club clubhouse opening by the
end of 2009.
Gilda’s Club timing has shifted. Their
capital campaign is set to launch in
January 2009, with the clubhouse
opening expected to be closer to 2011.
And as you might imagine, this timing
is a bit more uncertain in today’s
economic times.
In light of this timing shift and JLM’s
responsibility to best deploy our
resources (talent and treasure) to
further our mission, Gilda’s Club and
JLM have come to a mutual agreement
to end our original agreement as of
January 1, 2009 to allow Gilda’s Club
more time for its capital campaign.
At the point that Gilda’s Club has
raised sufficient capital to open the
clubhouse, both parties intend to
discuss a new project agreement, likely
similar to the original one regarding
Noogieland. There will be a letter of
understanding between Gilda’s Club
and JLM in the interim that will lend
JLM’s name to the support of Gilda’s
Club during its capital campaign and
will reserve the Founding Volunteer
Sponsor position for JLM.
If you have any questions regarding
this decision, please don’t hesitate to
contact any of the members of the
Board of Directors.
85 LEAGUERS: 1993-1994 JLM BOARD
LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE BUILDS LASTING FRIENDSHIPS
Front: Jo Damhof, Barb Beard, Jo Ellen Saylor,
Becky Odland, Anne Wight; Back: Pat Spencer,
Bette Englund, Patty Murphy, Carol Smith, Betsy Nimmo,
Tricia Davis, Linda Westenberg; Missing - Cynthia Jurgensen
By Gail Ballantyne, New Transfer
The 1993-1994 JLM Board’s list of accomplishments is
impressive: participation in eight community projects, more
than $322,000 in funds raised, and collaborative development of a
vision statement “touching lives, one by one” and identification of
League core values. While these twelve women have shaped the
League for years to come, they’ve also developed a close bond that
continues to this day.
President Jo Ellen Saylor says that her board formed an incredible
collective. “They all lead differently,” she explains. “Some are more
forceful, some are more quiet reflective leaders, but they’re all
amazing.” Jo Ellen is especially proud of the League’s involvement
in Success by 6, a program started in Minneapolis and then
replicated nationwide.
VP of Membership Barbara Beard adds that you can’t
underestimate the power of women empowering other women to
make an impact. “If you consider the 85 years we have been in this
community and the number of projects we have authored, it’s a
pretty big footprint!” she says.
15 years after their last official meeting, the 93-94 Board continues to meet regularly to catch up, travel and celebrate birthdays in
a group they call Book Club, though group discussions often stray from the assigned reading.
“It’s made up of talented, thoughtful, generous, giving and supporting women.” says Becky Odland, who served as VP of
Communications and is now Sustainer President. “I am lucky to call them my friends.”
“We are there for each other at all times and have shared many a laugh, cry, and lots of fun together,” says Pat Spencer, who
served as League President the following year. “These women are a special gift in my life.”
They are all still very active in community service, both working and volunteering at more than 40 different school, church and
nonprofit organizations.
Advice for new members:
“Advocate for yourself. Don’t wait for others to ask - you will definitely get out of the League what you put into it,” says Jo
Damhof, Recording Secretary.
“The benefits of volunteering are much better than any salary,” says Tricia Davis, VP of Finance. “Do it for yourself, for your
family, for the community.”
“Don’t forget to have fun,” says Carol Smith, VP of Fundraisers. “The old saying: the more you give the more you receive
certainly holds true with the JLM.”
“Keep an open mind as much as possible,” says Anne Wight, VP of Projects. “One of my favorite committees was one that I
never even signed up for. But the fabulous chair (Cynthia Jurgensen, now a member of Book Club) taught me a great deal, united
the committee and made the work fun.”
“Stretch yourself, think big and take risks,” says Patty Murphy, VP of Administration. “I promise that your long hours, hard
work and dedication will result in a wealth of education and friendships that will last a lifetime.”
NEW VOLUNTEER SHIFT
SIGN-UP PROCESS
By the JLM Technology Adhoc Committee
In response to many concerns about the volunteer shift sign-up process, the
Technology Ad Hoc Committee, along with JLM website developers, have worked
to make the process more user friendly.
Currently, members sign up for a shift from the Event Calendar within the JLM website.
This process has some limitations: more people than are needed can sign up, it’s difficult
to remove yourself from the volunteer list, and there are no reminders sent to the
volunteers. The new process for signing up for shifts is simple, but provides many
benefits for both the organizers and the volunteers.
When you log onto the Member Area of the JLM website, you will notice a Volunteer
Calendars section. In this section is a calendar that contains the links for all of the shifts
available. When you find a shift in which you are interested, click on the shift and it will
let you sign up (if shifts are available). You will also be able to see who else has signed up
for that shift, in case you are hoping to sign up with a friend. This is also where you will
go if you need to withdraw from a shift for any reason. Once you have signed up, you
will be sent an automatic email stating that you signed up for a specific shift. You will
also be sent a reminder email closer to the date of the event.
Because this new process was implemented after some shifts were already set up on the
main JLM Events Calendar, the original process will remain intact for those shifts. Also,
to make the transition easier, there will be a link from the main calendar to the new
volunteer calendar.
If you have any questions, please contact your Placement Advisor. They have all been
briefed on this new process and will be happy to help you get used to this new
adjustment.
85 LEAGUERS: SARA CLISBEE
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE FIRST YEAR
Sara with her
husband Andy
By Sarah Broughton, Internal Communications Committee
FUN FACTS
Current Committee: American Girl
Education: University of Missouri
Profession: HR Staffing Lead at Target Corporation
Family: Andy (husband) and Lily (dog)
Sara Clisbee is the picture of our 2008 New
Memberclass. She is energetic, committed, and
eager to get involved in the community. After
completing single day Target Volunteer events, Sara was
ready to get involved in a more stable and ongoing
community group. Joining the Junior League offered
more involvement, increased connections to the
community, and new friends all while being connected
to something she could be proud of.
Sara was nominated for the 85 Leaguers project as an
“Energetic New Member.” This came as a surprise to
Sara, but after just a few minutes with her, it was clear
why she stands out. Sara is eager to get involved and
drive action. Even before her placement meeting, she
contacted the chair of the committee she was
interested in to see if there was an opportunity to help. Through her proactive offer, she
has landed a committee position and will be able to work on the 2009 American Girl
Fashion Show. She has already created a strong bond with her core group through a boat
cruise, dinners and happy hours.
Sometimes, life takes turns that are unexpected. Sara had a great plan for her career
before entering the University of Missouri. She majored in Merchandising and sought
out a part-time position in the campus bookstore as the Assistant Apparel Buyer.
Determination and energy helped her obtain a position at Target Corporation shortly
after getting married. While still in training, Sara’s husband was offered a temporary
position in California causing the young couple to move for 11 months. Sara was able to
convince her new employer to transfer her to California as an HR lead in the stores.
That experience offered a new career path that awoke a great passion for helping others
and was able to continue in her current position back at the Minneapolis headquarters.
Through this experience, Sara is more willing to trust her gut and go with what she has
passion for.
Sara and her husband, Andy, enjoy trying new things, traveling and finding festivals and
other events to check out. Andy, an avid scuba diver, is excited for Sara to find a new
activity in the Junior League. Sara is excited to have meaningful activities on the
weeknights where she feels like she can make a difference.
As League Members, you will see a lot of Sara Clisbee in the years to come. She is
looking forward to more opportunities to connect with her passions and priorities. We
can look forward to a strong future with someone who will make a difference.

FROM BURDEN TO BOUNTY
HELPING OTHERS REALLY DOES PAY BACK MORE THAN WE GIVE
By MK Countryman, Kids in the Kitchen committee member
As I drove through the north Minneapolis neighborhood for our Kids in the
Kitchen kickoff event, I remembered the notice about not having storage for
purses and personal things. I also recalled the admonition not to leave valuables in the
car. My annoyance bubbled a bit as I tried to decide what to do with my purse and
computer, silently rebuking myself for not leaving these items at home.
Upon arrival, I saw bouncy kids ripe with energy playing around outside and making
their way inside. Then I saw JLM volunteers schlepping supplies, so I parked, slung
my purse and computer over my shoulder, and joined them. We unloaded the first
car and then received a brief tour of their beautiful facility. I dropped my load in the
kitchen, placed my computer and purse in a corner, made a mental note to keep an
eye out for my valuables, and headed back for another load.
It amazed me how much preparation there was for this two-hour event for some 40
kids. Around $200 was spent on many bags of groceries. Many bowls, serving
utensils, knives, cutting boards and other items were gathered, cleaned, organized,
packed and portaged to Minneapolis. There were aprons to string, posters to hang,
worksheets to copy and distribute, and even more food props for lessons and
insights into how many calories different foods contained. Then there were recipe
boxes to paint and fill, dishes for pouring paints, brushes, smocks and printed recipes
for the children to take home. Finally, the children were thrilled with the gift bags.
I left the event with another healthy dose of humility. In my fast-paced life, even acts
done for the greater good often feel like burdens. What I get out of these events is
always exponential to what I put into it. I was awed and inspired by the amount of
work put into organizing this event, and by the grace and ease with which it was
executed. I cherish the opportunity to work with a community of people so rich,
and so different from my own western suburb inhabitants. The children were
gracious, smiling, engaged, smart, well-mannered and hungry! I drove away a bit
remiss that I would not be seeing this group of kids again. I also drove away with my
purse and computer completely unscathed.
Friday, November 7, Kids in the Kitchen partnered with Free Arts Minnesota,
a former JLM project, in an event at Oak Park Community Center in North
Minneapolis. The kids ate lots of food, exercised, decorated aprons, and
thoroughly enjoyed themselves while learning about being healthy. An
invitation was extended to us to come back whenever we could! A HUGE
THANK YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS! You all showed up on time
with smiling faces and helped with all aspects of the event. It would not have
been such a success without all of your help.
SuStainer PreSident’S remarkS
One of my favorite holiday stories is The Gift of the Magi
by O. Henry.
In this short story, a young couple does not have much money to spend
on Christmas gifts for each other. The husband sells his gold watch to
buy combs for his wife’s beautiful hair. She cuts and sells her hair to
buy a chain for his watch. O. Henry creates a shining example of giving
and receiving and ends the story with these words, “O all
who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest.”
Thank you for your gifts of time, talent and giving
to the JLM. I look forward to celebrating with you at
the holiday party at Tricia Davis’ home on December 11,
welcoming in the New Year at Eve of the Eve on December 30, and doing community
service work at the Project Impact Days on January 13 and 17. Happy Holidays!
Why I joined the League: Getting to know the new city I moved to
through volunteerism
What I like best about the League so far: Meeting so many intelligent and motivated women
all with the same interests/passions as myself.
What others are saying about her:
“Whitney has been fantastic. She is already showing interest in leadership roles and hopes to help
make a huge different in our projects. We are very lucky to have her in our League!”
“I have been able to spend a lot of time with Whitney and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to
know her. She is a vibrant young woman and great addition to Junior League. She encompasses
all the qualities of a strong Junior Leaguer which makes me want to be associated with
people like Whitney. She’s enthusiastic, driven and organized, but also very personable and
has a kind heart.”
