She is energetic, committed, and eager to get involved in the community. After completing single day Target Volunteer events, Sara was ready to get involved in a more stable and ongoing community group. Joining the Junior League offered more involvement, increased connections to the community, and new friends all while being connected to something she could be proud of. Sara was nominated for the 85 Leaguers project as an “Energetic New Member.” This came as a surprise to Sara, but after just a few minutes with her, it was clear why she stands out. Sara is eager to get involved and drive action. Even before her placement meeting, she contacted the chair of the committee she was interested in to see if there was an opportunity to help. Through her proactive offer, she has landed a committee position and will be able to work on the 2009 American Girl Fashion Show. She has already created a strong bond with her core group through a boat cruise, dinners and happy hours. Sometimes, life takes turns that are unexpected. Sara had a great plan for her career before entering the University of Missouri. She majored in Merchandising and sought out a part-time position in the campus bookstore as the Assistant Apparel Buyer. Determination and energy helped her obtain a position at Target Corporation shortly after getting married. While still in training, Sara’s husband was offered a temporary position in California causing the young couple to move for 11 months. Sara was able to convince her new employer to transfer her to California as an HR lead in the stores. That experience offered a new career path that awoke a great passion for helping others and was able to continue in her current position back at the Minneapolis headquarters. Through this experience, Sara is more willing to trust her gut and go with what she has passion for. Sara and her husband, Andy, enjoy trying new things, traveling and finding festivals and other events to check out. Andy, an avid scuba diver, is excited for Sara to find a new activity in the Junior League. Sara is excited to have meaningful activities on the weeknights where she feels like she can make a difference. As League Members, you will see a lot of Sara Clisbee in the years to come. She is looking forward to more opportunities to connect with her passions and priorities. We can look forward to a strong future with someone who will make a difference.
Projects FROM BURDEN TO BOUNTY HELPING OTHERS REALLY DOES PAY BACK MORE THAN WE GIVE By MK Countryman, Kids in the Kitchen committee member As I drove through the north Minneapolis neighborhood for our Kids in the Kitchen kickoff event, I remembered the notice about not having storage for purses and personal things. I also recalled the admonition not to leave valuables in the car. My annoyance bubbled a bit as I tried to decide what to do with my purse and computer, silently rebuking myself for not leaving these items at home. Upon arrival, I saw bouncy kids ripe with energy playing around outside and making their way inside. Then I saw JLM volunteers schlepping supplies, so I parked, slung my purse and computer over my shoulder, and joined them. We unloaded the first car and then received a brief tour of their beautiful facility. I dropped my load in the kitchen, placed my computer and purse in a corner, made a mental note to keep an eye out for my valuables, and headed back for another load. It amazed me how much preparation there was for this two-hour event for some 40 kids. Around $200 was spent on many bags of groceries. Many bowls, serving utensils, knives, cutting boards and other items were gathered, cleaned, organized, packed and portaged to Minneapolis. There were aprons to string, posters to hang, worksheets to copy and distribute, and even more food props for lessons and insights into how many calories different foods contained. Then there were recipe boxes to paint and fill, dishes for pouring paints, brushes, smocks and printed recipes for the children to take home. Finally, the children were thrilled with the gift bags. I left the event with another healthy dose of humility. In my fast-paced life, even acts done for the greater good often feel like burdens. What I get out of these events is always exponential to what I put into it. I was awed and inspired by the amount of work put into organizing this event, and by the grace and ease with which it was executed. I cherish the opportunity to work with a community of people so rich, and so different from my own western suburb inhabitants. The children were gracious, smiling, engaged, smart, well-mannered and hungry! I drove away a bit remiss that I would not be seeing this group of kids again. I also drove away with my purse and computer completely unscathed. Friday, November 7, Kids in the Kitchen partnered with Free Arts Minnesota, a former JLM project, in an event at Oak Park Community Center in North Minneapolis. The kids ate lots of food, exercised, decorated aprons, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves while learning about being healthy. An invitation was extended to us to come back whenever we could! A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS! You all showed up on time with smiling faces and helped with all aspects of the event. It would not have been such a success without all of your help. BOOKS 4 KIDS READING CIRCLES Reading Circles are an opportunity for JLM members to read with small groups of children ages 5-11 to increase their literacy and develop their love of reading! Shifts are available weekly starting January 2009. The reading circle will be every Tuesday from 3:45 to 4:45 at Bancroft Elementary School, 1315 E 38th St., Mpls 55407. One volunteer needed per reading circle, two 1-hour sessions equal one project shift, and this will fulfill a community pillar requirement. Please sign up on the JLM website.
