REACH OUT STATEMENT

Minnesota winter has the tendency to cause everyone to
hibernate: social events are fewer, neighbors disappear
into their homes, and more time is spent under a blanket on
our couch. I am proud to say our members bucked this trend
in January and got out into our community! We rolled up our
sleeves to assemble furniture at Bridging and sort food at
Second Harvest. We also attended roundtable discussions on
three important issues facing our community – hunger, health
& nutrition, and early child development.
With the arrival of February, opportunities to connect with
each other and our community will continue. I encourage
you to engage in rich discussion at your neighborhood
meetings. Grab a few friends – within and outside the JLM – to help sort books at
the warehouse for Books 4 Kids. Take advantage of the great opportunities that
Helping Hands has organized for us to volunteer with outside community
organizations. And when you are in need of a laugh mid-month, come to the Brave
New Workshop event held on February 19.
February is also a time when the leadership of the JLM really begins to put next year
at the forefront of our thinking. Nominating is busy placing next year’s chairs. The
management boards are discussing and voting on motions that will be brought
forward to membership at the March general meeting regarding our portfolio of
projects and fundraisers. Both the current and next year’s Boards will hold a joint
retreat to begin transitioning the League’s strategic plan initiatives.
So, whether you are in the moment of volunteering or deep in conversation in a
leadership meeting, you are truly living the mission of the Junior League of
Minneapolis. You are helping to build a stronger community today and for the
future. When you get out and work in your community, we will all be a bit warmer
during this cold Minnesota winter!
Warm regards,
Emily Backstrom
TRANSFER MEMBERS GIVE BACK
AND GEAR UP FOR A SOCIAL SECOND
Megan Foley and Kristine Jessen enjoy
the pot luck dinner before getting to work
at Bridging
HALF OF THE LEAGUE YEAR
By: Becky Brown, Transfer Committee Chair
On January 13, Kristine Jessen, transfer member,
Megan Foley, committee member, and I, joined 90
other enthusiastic Leaguers at Bridging’s Bloomington
location. The transfer group was even more widely
represented at the second Impact Day event on Saturday
January 17. Transfer members Christina Barberot, Lauren
Cadd, Alicia Riggins, Caroline Eachus and Jennifer Smith,
along with Natalie Migliarini, committee member, turned
out to make their impact at Second Harvest. It was clear
both events were great experiences for everyone involved.
We have an amazing group of transfers this year and I’m
sure you’ll see more of them at league events in the future!
The transfer group is also gearing up for some fun social events to hopefully spice up the cold
winter months. Our agenda so far is as follows:
Thursday February 19 – Transfer group outing to SEGG’s Third Thursday Event at Brave
New Workshop (Uptown, Minneapolis)
Saturday March 28 – A Wine Tasting Soiree (Home of Leslie Niemoeller, Minnetonka)
*Spouses/Guests Included*
In addition to socializing and getting to know all of our talented transfer women, the committee
is also working on some other fun social ideas as well as working to schedule volunteer shifts for
one or more of the following: Helping Hands, Books 4 Kids and American Girl.
DEFINING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE PASSIONATE
By her Dinner Club, Sarah Curfman, Susan Gabler, Kate Knight, Katie Kraus,
Rachel LaTour, Elizabeth Monico and Rima Torgerson
FUN FACTS
Year joined the League: 1989-1990
Family: Husband, David and two daughters,
Blake and Evan
Biggest League Developing the Annual Fund
accomplishment:
Lasting Impression: “We will forever remember her
sparkle, passion, humor and her
humanity.”
It is difficult to capture with words this woman whose friendship transcended generations, whose giving spirit never stopped,
whose smile could light up a room, who always told it like it was and who brought great energy to any Junior League event.
There is so much to share about Patty Smith; she truly exemplified what a Junior League member should be.
Patty was passionate about the JLM and its mission. She served in many capacities including various Chair and Board positions,
Nominating Committee and as a Sustainer Representative. Patty had a “just do it” approach to her volunteerism. After Chairing
the Formula for Hope Luncheon for the Crisis Nursery, she felt there was an opportunity for the JLM to raise money through
a similar approach. Thus began our Annual Fund. As the Chair of the first Annual Fund Committee, Patty pulled together
numerous women she had met along her journey in the JLM. At the first meeting, the ice breaker challenged members to explain
why they were moved to participate. It was clear that the driving factor was not an interest in fundraising, but rather an inability
to say “NO” to Patty!
Patty was also passionate about mentoring members and fostering relationships within the League. Three years ago, she had the
idea to start a dinner club. Her criteria for inclusion were women who were serious about volunteerism, but also liked to relax
and have a good time. We didn’t know one another well, so we enjoyed getting to know one another better as we gathered at
each other’s homes to cook, drink, talk ... and mostly laugh. Soon we started going out for impromptu breakfasts, going on
shopping expeditions, hosting baby showers, and riding Patty’s jet skis and cruising in the boat with her and her husband David.
Our group faced both good times and bad … births, divorces, raising children, and raising money. Patty was like our “den
mother,” offering us advice on everything from fashion to relationships ... always with a warm smile and a big hug. Patty was the
first person we went to in tough situations we didn’t think we could face alone. For all of us and many others, Patty provided
willing and thoughtful counsel, support, encouragement and perspective … and always with lots of laughter.
It was heartbreaking news for the entire JLM when Patty was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the fall of 2007. It was difficult
for this little sparkplug, who was always doing for others, to now have to focus on herself and fighting the cancer. Despite her
illness, she still managed to do everything from sending gifts for birthdays to making donations to fundraisers. After a yearlong
battle, Patty Smith passed away on November 10, 2008. We will remember her sparkle, passion, humor and her humanity. She
was a great friend, a great mentor and a great Junior Leaguer. We will continue to set her a plate at our dinners and raise a glass
in her memory.
85 LEAGUERS: AALIYAH SHAFIQ
EMBRACING THE LEAGUE. EMBRACING OPPORTUNITIES.
By Sarah Broughton, Internal Communications
FUN FACTS
Joined JL Atlanta:
2002
Transferred to JLM:
2008
Education:
BA in German from Harvard University,
MBA from Harvard Business School
Occupation:
Associate Marketing Manager, General Mills
Fun Fact:
Won the “Hat Award” at the 2008 Twin City
Polo Classic
Advice to New Members:
“Embrace the League and opportunities.
Embrace the women as friends and embrace
the opportunity for service.”
Just two years out of college, Aaliyah was looking to connect more deeply with the community.
With her manager’s support and sponsorship she was admitted into the 2002 New Member
class in the Junior League of Atlanta. It was a means to meet other like-minded professional
women who are interested in giving back to the community. A great place to make new friends!
The Junior League of Atlanta has some differences from Minneapolis. Sponsorship and an
interview are required to apply. Joining the group of nearly 4000 women still allowed
opportunities to get to know others with smaller groups of new members. Social activities and
community projects brought the group together up to twice monthly. Some familiar activities
include a city bus tour and a “Nearly New” retail store.
Since moving to Minneapolis to work for General Mills, Aaliyah has jumped right into the
culture and activities of the Twin Cities. In addition to the transfer group of JLM, Aaliyah has
volunteered her time on the Committee for the 19 th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
Breakfast, Harvard undergrad admission interviews, and is active with the Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority. For fun, she is on a flag football team (both indoor and outdoor) through General
Mills and enjoys the cultural and sports events found in the Metro area.
Travel is a true passion for Aaliyah. Fluency in German allowed opportunities to work abroad in
Germany and London. While in business school, Aaliyah visited nine countries in just two years.
These trips did not follow the typical tourist itinerary, but instead included several memorable
moments such as meeting President Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan, the former President Vicente
Fox in Mexico, walking along the Great Wall in China, and having a military escort in the
demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. There are not many who can claim to have
had a foot in both Korea’s at once. Future trips are planned for Aruba, the Dominican Republic
and Mexico. It sounds like Aaliyah is searching out the sunshine!
Aaliyah’s energy and passion for life spill into her action-oriented life while setting a great
example for Junior Leaguers on how to positively impact the community. Her advice to new
members can apply to all: “Embrace the League and opportunities. Embrace the women as
friends and embrace the opportunity for service.”
DUES INFORMATION
AJLI’s portion of dues is $35 a year per Leaguer. JLM’s portion of dues is $125 for Actives and $65 for Sustainers.
All dues must be paid in full by April 1, 2009
*** Dues can be paid online in the eStore***
APRIL 1: All dues statements must be postmarked or paid online in the
eStore by April 1. If you are going Sustaining or Resigning, your request
must be postmarked by April 1. If you are requesting Advisory Status,
Leave of Absence, or Community Placement, your letter or change of
status form must be postmarked by April 1. Forms are available online.
MAY 1: A member whose dues have not been received by May 1 shall have
her membership in the JLM automatically revoked. The member may be
reinstated upon payment of the current year’s dues, including the $20 late fee,
prior assessments, and a $20 reinstatement fee. Reinstatements should be
mailed to JLM Headquarters, Attn: Dues/Reinstatement/VP Membership.
Are you planning to go Sustaining? Consider Advisory Status!
Advisory Status provides the opportunity to participate in the League as an
Active member without the additional responsibility of community or
fundraising shift requirements. This status is a bridge between Active and
Sustaining membership. Attend general meetings, vote and act in an advisory
role to a committee, project, or fundraiser. Contact your Placement Advisor
for more information.
If you have been an Active member of the Junior League for seven years
excluding New Member year and leave of absence time, you are eligible to go
sustaining. In order to do so, you must complete a change of status form
(available online) and send it to the Placement Advisor via mail or email
(placement@jlminneapolis.org) postmarked by April 1. You will automatically
remain an Active member if you do not request this change of status.
Are you planning to Transfer?
If you are going to transfer out of our League at this time (through June), you
need not pay anything to us. You will owe to the receiving League. Please
inform the office if you plan to transfer.
If you are transferring July 1 or after, you must pay your 2009/10 dues now.
After your dues have been collected and your transfer has been
completed you will receive a partial refund of those dues.
Are you planning to resign?
We hope not, but if you are going to resign you must complete the change of
85 LEAGUERS: KERRY MAHONEY
DEFINING VARIOUS YEARS OF FIRSTS
By Johanna Merrill Price
FUN FACTS
Joined the League: 2003
Future Board Position: Recording Secretary for 2009-
10 League year
Hometown: Andover, MN
Education: Undergraduate degree from
the University of Minnesota
Two children: Connor, 4, and Kate, 2.
In her short six years in the Junior League of Minneapolis, Kerry Mahoney has already led a New Member Class, chaired a committee and next
year she’ll serve on the Board of Directors as Recording Secretary.
Kerry said, “I look back on the last six years, and I’ve learned so much from the League; from gaining leadership skills to learning about nonprofits
to fundraising. I’ve gained so much experience that will help me in the future with not only volunteering, but also in my career.”
In addition to the heavy time commitment of chairing a committee, Kerry is a full-time sales manager for a manufacturer of fiber distribution
systems, mom to two small children and wife to her husband Paul, an attorney.
“I’m very good at multitasking, but there are days that it’s very challenging staying on top of things. But I have good memory, and I’m an
organized person. I also have a very supportive husband. If I have a League commitment, he’s there to take care of the kids. He was actually the
one who pushed me to put myself up for a board position. He was my biggest supporter when I was unsure about taking that on. “
A Minnesota native, Kerry joined the League in 2003. “Some friends of mine and I had been thinking about doing it for a few years, and I finally
just decided to join on my own. I had volunteered through my sorority in college, and wanted to find an outlet to do more volunteer work.”
Her first placement was The Clothes Line, the League’s former consignment store. Her second and third active years she belonged to the New
Member Committee, first as a core group leader and then as the assistant new member chair, where she was in charge of trainings for the new
members.
For the past two years, Kerry has been on the Special Events Gifts & Grants (SEGG) committee. Last year she was the director of special events;
this year she is the SEGG chair. Kerry said, “I like to plan and coordinate events. If I had to pick a career outside of what I‘m doing now, I would
be an event planner. It’s fun to have that outlet as a volunteer. In regards to the gifts and grants side, I didn’t have a lot of experience in that before
joining SEGG, so it’s been an opportunity for me to learn more about grant writing and raising money for the annual fund.”
Kerry said that one of the contributions she is most proud of occurred last year when she was director of special events. SEGG achieved their
fundraising goal of $50,000. She also reflected proudly on the year she planned training for new members. “Being a part of that and helping retain
the majority of new members who had come on board that year was very fulfilling.”
When she’s not volunteering or working, Kerry likes to golf, read, cook and travel (though she said that she doesn’t get to travel as much as she
used to now that she has kids). Her favorite destination is Europe (specifically Paris), and her dream trip is a vacation with her husband to Italy.
Kerry is a model Leaguer, who exhibits commitment to the community and the JLM. She said, “I’ve really enjoyed my time with the League, which
is why I think in part I’m able to manage it all so well. The friends that I’ve made the past six years are some of my closest. It’s been one of the
best experiences I’ve had.”
in the League, particularly The Clothes Line. She also enjoyed many
LeagueAires performances as a child, a tradition she carries on with her
own children.
NANCY PHINNEY
Joined Junior League: 1996 in Minneapolis, transferred to Boston and
NYC until 2003, then transferred back to Minneapolis
Family: Husband Scott of 8 years, children Charlie (6), Gracie (6), Sophie
(2) and Isabella (their pet Boston Terrier)
Education: University of Kansas, Business Communications
League impact: While working at The Clothes Line, Nancy exchanged
business cards with another woman. One month later, Nancy was
employed at the woman’s company, and her career took off – including
transferring to Boston where she met her husband.
Meet Barb Hartwell and her three daughters, Lisa, Kristi and Nancy – all members of the
Junior League of Minneapolis. Combined, they have contributed nearly fifty active
years to the JLM. Over the years, they have collaborated on committees, attended meetings
together, and enjoyed family time while volunteering. All four women are now sustainers
and continue to be involved in the community.
Barb joined the League in 1976 and is an enthusiastic advocate. She encourages others to join
the League for friendships, personal growth and something to really believe in. “Consider
getting involved in a leadership capacity,” Barb says. “It’s an opportunity to stretch and grow
in a hugely supportive environment.”
Volunteerism plays a large role in Barb’s family. Even as a young, busy mother in the late
seventies, Barb set an example for her daughters by being an engaged community member.
Lisa, Kristi and Nancy understood from a young age that contributing to the community is
a part of life – including playing quietly while Barb did her shifts at The Clothes Line!
Barb shares a quote about the value of volunteerism borrowed from Jeanne Hutchins (past President of Junior League of Rochester, NY and
mother of Patty Murphy, JLM):
“What drives me is the opportunity to serve as a catalyst for change in meeting societal needs that require an imaginative response. As an active
participant in community life, I seek to use my God-given talents to leave the institutions and agencies I serve in better condition than I found
them and to show love and compassion to those in need. I always receive more than I give.”
The family’s time in the League has been rewarding, offering opportunities for personal and professional development, the making of lasting
friendships, and the continuation of a family heritage. Lisa, Kristi and Nancy have inherited the best possible gift from their mother – a call to
service and all of the rewards that come from it.
“GOOD MORNING”
By Jacque Olson, LeagueAires Committee
Since my last posting, LeagueAires has tapped into the New Year – but not before
sending a dedicated handful of knitting needles flying over the holiday season just
to accommodate a last-minute accessory for 66 women.
Preparations completed, we are all loving revisiting familiar friends and making new
ones as we now make our way to the many places where we sing; traveling the
frozen roadways from now until spring.
Songs such as “Good Morning”, “Together Wherever We Go” and “Catch a Falling
Star”, find us looking into the beautiful faces of our audiences grateful that these
moments return each year. Each one, indeed, shining like stars, lighting our paths and
as the song “For Good” from the Broadway musical Wicked so beautifully
expresses, we come to understand “because we knew you, we have been changed
for good”.
Thank you, Junior League. Our sisterhood and our audiences have changed us for
good, and we could not have experienced these changes without your support and
sponsorship.
We so look forward to being with you, and singing for you at MacPhail Center for
Music in Antonello Hall on the evening of March 10 for your monthly meeting.
Additionally, we are excited for the opportunity to be the anchor presenters in a
special musical event at MacPhail Center for Music on Monday, April 20, 10:00
AM until Noon. We invite you to attend for that special day in celebration of
lifelong learning. Please bring your parents and grandparents as well!! It will be a
wonderful day to pay tribute as we share the common belief of: Making Music a
Volunteers at the BRIDGING Project Impact event.
PROJECT IMPACT DAY 2009!
By Annie Gorman, Helping Hands Chair
For the second year in a row, members of the JLM joined together to make an
incredible impact on our community! This year, in celebration of our 85 th
anniversary, we expanded Impact Day into two separate events – both were a huge
success!
First, we gathered close to 100 Leaguers at Bridging’s warehouse in Bloomington.
Bridging began in 1987 to provide the economically disadvantaged with a one-time
gift of quality furniture and household items which helps to stabilize and improve
their lives. Since Bridging’s inception, they’ve served over 40,000 thousand families in
our community. We began our evening with a potluck, tours of the facility and
stories from Bridging employees, including Fran Heitzman, the founder of Bridging.
Our project work included assembling jewelry armoires, tables and TV stands. In
total, we assembled 89 pieces of furniture. Our donation of time and hard work will
greatly assist Bridging meet their goals of serving our community in 2009!
Next, 50 volunteers headed to Second Harvest Heartland’s warehouse in NE
Minneapolis. Second Harvest is the Upper Midwest’s largest hunger-relief
organization with a mission of ending hunger through community partnerships. SHH
distributes more than 41 million pounds of food annually to over 1,000 member
agencies and programs in MN and western WI, as well as directly serving individuals
and families. Our morning began with a breakfast potluck and a presentation of
SHH’s impact and mission. Our project work included sorting donated food items
and packing multiple 40 pound food boxes. In total, we packed over 12,000 pounds
of food for SHH to distribute to their partner organizations!
Both of these amazing events offered wonderful opportunities for JLM members
to get out into the community, do some hands-on volunteer work, and learn about
these two incredible local organizations that address critical needs in our
communities. Our time and hard work helped enable these organizations move closer
to meeting their mission and making an impact!
HELPING HANDS:
JLM, to put on this fun event for
JLM BREAKFAST BUDDIES:
A SMALL GROUP MAKING A BIG IMPACT
By Anne Salmen, Breakfast Buddies Chair
ach month, nearly a dozen members of the JLM’s Breakfast Buddies committee revisit the trials and
E tribulations of life’s most awkward and challenging years by returning – willingly – to junior high
school. The Breakfast Buddies program pairs JLM and community volunteers with seventh and eighth
grade girls at St. Louis Park Junior High School in a year-long mentoring program.
Monthly mentoring sessions serve up much more than just early-morning breakfast. They provide an
opportunity for mentors to consistently connect with and inspire a small group of young women at a
critical point in their academic careers. Throughout the year, speaker sessions and discussions enable
mentors to forge meaningful relationships while serving as role models in team building, goal
development and career exploration exercises.
The fall curriculum included a “Get Acquainted” session in October, an activity-focused session on
“Team Building” in November and a December session themed around “Celebrating Friendship.” Most recently, the students and mentors visited
the Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) headquarters in downtown St. Paul for a tour that included a behind-the-scenes look at the workings (and
careers) that keep the MPR stations humming around the clock. Several tour groups even had the opportunity to visit with an on-air DJ from the
Current (89.3 FM). In the coming weeks, students and mentors will take another career exploration field trip to a college campus and will participate
in sessions that focus on body image/self-confidence, careers and goal-setting.
As a relatively small project in the JLM portfolio, Breakfast Buddies still boasts a sizable impact in lives touched. More than 350 girls have been part
of the program since its inception in 2003.
The search for confidence and acceptance in the social and academic universe can be challenging for teenage girls. Thanks to the JLM and dedicated
community volunteers, Breakfast Buddies provides meaningful, consistent support and encouragement as well as exposure to new experiences
that just might inspire tomorrow’s female leaders to reach for the stars.
THIS WEEK, 500,000 MINNESOTANS FIGURING OUT
HOW TO PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE
HUNGER ISSUE HIGHLIGHTED IN FIRST COMMUNITY ISSUES ROUNDTABLE
By Tara Sullivan, VP Marketing
The goal of these sessions, hosted by the Project Development Committee, is interactive learning about issues that could be addressed by future or expanded existing
projects (a project vote will happen March). Note: If you missed it, you can listen online! Visit jlminneapolis.org, log in and go to Member
Forums, then click on Project Development downloads.
The first of three Community Issues Roundtables kicked off on Saturday, January 10 with Rob Zeaske, Executive Director of Second Harvest
Heartland, the Upper Midwest’s largest hunger-relief organization.
“We all have a lot of problems; when you’re hungry, you only have one.” That quote, and some of the startling facts – one in 10 Minnesotans have
to figure out how to find food in any given week; demand on food shelves is up 30 percent this year; only half of eligible people are signed up for
food stamps – painted a picture of a grim issue, but one that can be solved.
After covering the ‘what’, Zeaske covered the ‘why’ of addressing hunger. It’s the right thing to do; it’s possible; and it’s the smart thing to do.
Human potential is lost when you can’t cover the fundamentals, and – just like early childhood education – society pays less when people have
enough to eat. For example, seniors who are hungry spend more time in the hospital, a case where hunger is leading directly to higher cost, as well
as human suffering.
“There’s a misconception that hunger = homelessness. The hungry could be the older person sitting next to you at church, or
the kids your kids have play dates with,” said Zeaske. “It’s invisible by design; no one is going to wear a pink ribbon or hold a
parade to tell other people they don’t have enough to eat.”
Given the scope of the issue, it’s no surprise that thousands of agencies and hundreds of food shelves are hard at work. Second Harvest Heartland
and others are trying to look at it as more of a system, so that each aspect can be addressed with the end in mind. “It’s a distribution issue” is how
Zeaske characterized it. In the U.S. we clearly have an overabundance of food; it’s just not getting to all who need it.
The last part of the session focused on four gaps, some of which the JLM could address. One area is food rescue – picture the food left over at the
close of business in any restaurant. How can that be safely redistributed in a cost-effective way? Another is food stamps; if only half of eligible
people are signing up, clearly there is a need. A third is summer hunger – those children who are fed during the year by the free and reduced-cost
lunch program don’t have that assistance when school is closed. Related to that need is a backpack concept, where those same children receive a back
pack of food every Friday to take home (other Junior Leagues are working in this area, as are other nonprofits).
What can you do about this? Project Development will bring forward three concepts at the February neighborhood meetings; please attend to
provide your input. With that input, Project Development will dig further into each and bring forward a proposed new project(s) for your vote at
the March general meeting.
SUSTAINER PRESIDENT’S REMARKS
Giving people their dignity is a key factor
in the operation of Bridging Inc. according
to founder Fran Heitzman, who spoke to
nearly 100 Leaguers gathered at the facility
for a JLM 85 th Anniversary Project Impact
event on January 13. A tour of the facility revealed a warehouse of
furniture, bedding, dishes, anything that can furnish a home for a family in need.
In groups, Leaguers mingled to assemble chests and consoles while joking, laughing,
sharing tools and socializing. The other Project Impact event at Second Harvest
Heartland on January 17, demonstrated the collective efforts of 50 women and (2
husbands!) to box 12,000 pounds of food in two hours for hungry people in need!
From hands-on volunteering in January, to music appreciation in February, the
Sustainer year marches on. Come to a Musical Evening at MacPhail Center for Music
on February 18 to warm your heart and lift your spirits with good friends!
EVE of the EVE 2008
Thank you to all of the attendees and donors. A special thank you to Kathryn
Dangers and Carol Smith as Eve of the Eve guest speakers – you truly made the
night and your messages were so motivating to remember the impact and mission
of The Junior League of Minneapolis.
THANK YOU EVE OF THE EVE SPONSORS
Seeing the children’s faces light up
when Santa arrives was one of the
highlights to this year’s Breakfast with
Santa. Held at the Wayzata Country
Club, the decorations were festive
and jolly and the morning was
enjoyed by all those that attended
this sold out event.
It continues to be a memorable
event. For some their favorite part
might be the holiday crafts made
by the children, or getting tattoos.
Singing Christmas carols and
ringing jingle bells with Santa Claus
is a fun site to see, and for most
children, sitting on Santa’s lap is the
best part of morning. No matter
their preference everyone leaves
with a smile on their face.
Thank you for all that attended. The
event raised over $2100 for the
Junior League projects. Another
successful year for Breakfast
