On September 8, the Junior League of Minneapolis
will hold its first General Meeting of the 2009-2010
I will be the first to admit that I love
going to our September General
Meeting. It’s reminiscent of the first
day of school – seeing many faces
I haven’t seen all summer, getting
back into the school schedule,
meeting my new teacher and of
course feeling so optimistic about
what the school year would bring.
I feel the same way about Junior
League in September, as I love
seeing JLM friends I didn’t get a
chance to connect with during the
summer, talking with everyone about
their placements and sharing all the
excitement for the year ahead.
This September, I have to say, I am
especially excited about our General
Meeting. Our entire meeting is going
to celebrate YOU, our Members in
Motion, as well as showcase new
tools and resources to enhance
your JLM member experience.
Honoring our traditions, we will
formally welcome and introduce
our New Members and Transfers
for the 2009-2010 year. In addition,
we will provide updates on three
significant projects that the JLM
Leadership team has been heavily
involved in implementing just in time
passionate and successful woman
to kick off our new League year.
Julie’s mission to inspire women
new and old JLM friends, celebrating
our year ahead
and joining in the
excitement!

We Heard You!
Rachel Smith, VP Membership
On behalf of the 2009-2010 Board of Directors, I want to let you know
how excited we are to kick off a new League year! We have changes
in the works to help our members continue to realize their potential,
meet new friends and make a difference in the community. In the spring,
many of you participated in the annual JLM Membership and Marketing
Survey. The Board took your feedback and used it to help make
important decisions about where to focus our time this year. Following
is a summary of some of your concerns and what we are doing to
respond:
“Improve the website. Make it easier to track requirements.” Mission
accomplished as we launched our new website in August. You will
be amazed at how easy it is to navigate the website, determine your
outstanding requirements, buy tickets to events, and get the information
you need!
“Increase the size of membership through recruitment and retention.”
We added a year-round recruitment subcommittee to the New Member
Committee, and they began their recruiting efforts right away with a
spring social. It is quite obvious that it paid off with our biggest New
Member class in many years – 114 New Members!
“Continue to develop leadership skills.” We are excited to launch the
Leadership & Lattes series this year. Join your JLM friends for these
dynamic training opportunities that will help you become a better
volunteer and a more empowered woman.
“Have more events where Leaguers can meet, have conversations and
make connections.” What are you doing this third Thursday? Mark your
calendars because our Third Thursdays are now Third Thursday Happy
Hours. What a great way to meet up with JLM friends for some girl time!
“Build a stronger mentoring program.” This year our mentoring
program is working hard to create a meaningful relationship between
each mentor and her mentoring circle, a small group of mentees
who will meet to share stories, seek advice and participate in training
discussions that tie to a monthly training topic.
“Make the meetings more dynamic, celebrate successes and provide
more information about past projects.” The Board began to reassess
how we can engage and enlighten our members at our General
Meetings. Come see what we have in store at our first General Meeting
in September!
We want your time in the JLM to be meaningful, and we want you to
know that the Board will continue to work hard to implement changes
that our membership has requested. Make plans to attend many JLM
events and start reaping the benefits of belonging to such an amazing
organization!
It’s Official – We’re Expecting (114 New Members)!
Kathryn Dangers, New Member Communications Coordinator
As the New Member Committee wraps up an exciting, eventful
summer of recruiting efforts, we take pause (a very short pause) to
reflect on our success! We want to thank Erin Schultz, Recruiting
Director, for her tireless efforts. Erin organized our recruiting events,
handled communication with potential New Members and exceeded
our recruiting goal with ease and grace. Congratulations Erin! With the
one of the largest JLM New Member classes to date, the New Member
Committee is “all hands on deck” and enjoying the ride.
Member in Motion: Jen Abel
When did you join the League? I joined in 2008
as we were kicking off our 85th year.
What have been some of the most significant
lasting contributions you have made to the
League and the community? As part of the
Communications team, I am enthusiastic to help
with updating our League brand – bringing our
materials closer to representing the passion,
generosity and energy of today’s League
women. Rebranding the MINI, designing the New
Member flyer and 85th Booklet have been my
most recent projects.
How has the League changed your outlook on
volunteering? Since joining the League, I’ve seen
that giving has no boundaries and I don’t miss
the chance to share my League experiences with
others. I often catch myself smiling as I recount
the projects that leave a significant impression
on the lives we touch. And, now when someone
says, “I’m looking for something more fulfilling,”
I speak with confidence and pride about the
differences our League makes.
What inspires you? Many things inspire me: a
good challenge; the moment everything clicks;
passion for a hobby; being part of a team with
a common goal; music; and that time in the
morning when the air is crisp, before all the
chaos of the days begins. (I’m not an early
morning person but moments like these have me
thinking I could be!)
Who is your role model? My parents -- their
humor, loyalty, strength and ability to see the
up-side to every situation continue to influence
my life.
On July 30, we hosted a New Member Registration Social at the
home of Sustainer Claudia Sefton. We are so thankful to Claudia
for graciously opening her home to our committee and to our New
Members! The Registration Social provided New Members the
opportunity to get more information about the JLM, meet other New
Members and complete their registration.
The New Member year officially began August 22 with the New
Member Kick-Off at The Woman’s Club. We spent the morning
informing our New Members about the League and letting them know
what to expect during their first year. We also introduced the New
Members to their Core Groups and Sister Core Groups.
We are exemplifying the theme of Members in Motion with our
recruiting efforts and record class size. The women of the New
Member class are dynamic, talented individuals with experiences
and skills worth sharing. Each month we will feature women from our
New Member class and the experiences they have brought to or had
with the League. With 114 New Members participating in training and
joining committees in November, we know we are well on our way to a
successful year of Members in Motion!
What is your favorite quote? “Not everything that
can be counted counts, and not everything that
counts can be counted.”
Sustainer President’s Remarks
Reflect on the year you joined the League. Who
recruited you? Why did you say “yes?” What was
appealing about League? Think about now. Why do
you stay? What do you like best? What can we do
better to meet your needs and expectations?
Throughout the year, you will have the
opportunity to share your opinion on-line and
off-line. Sustainers with Actives will be asked to
serve on the Member Retention Ad Hoc to study
the topic. And, a Sustainer Member Satisfaction
committee is forming to brainstorm ways for meaningful outreach to further
our relationships to keep Sustainers involved. Mary Cederberg, Sara
Sternberger, and Lisa Weisman have agreed to facilitate this. If interested,
call or email me. We are listening!
Being a retail merchant, I believe our Members are our most precious
commodity. Fun and friendships result from the collaboration of working
together to build something greater in the community than what we found.
And, the friendships are the best part!
The Junior Leagues’ Roadmap for the Future…
The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) has
embarked on a major strategic planning initiative whose goal is
nothing short of transforming the Junior League to thrive for decades
to come. At a time when many organizations are retrenching, AJLI
leaders are taking bold steps to ensure the future of an organization
that has contributed to the development of women as civic leaders
and to meaningful community improvement since the first Junior
League was founded in 1901.
The road to transformation actually began several years ago with
an internal analysis of membership data and quantitative research
among current, resigned and prospective members. The information
told a story of declining membership in many of the 292 Junior
Leagues, albeit a slow decline, and growing issues among members
about the quality of the membership experience. There was a need
to act boldly to ensure that an organization that has contributed so
much for over 100 years was prepared to contribute in a radically
different world for another 100 years.
or with any questions!
We have retained the consulting firm and think tank, the Monitor
Institute, to guide us through a strategic planning process. The
Monitor Institute is the nonprofit consulting arm of the Monitor
Group, and works with a range of nonprofit organizations and
foundations. The Monitor Institute consultants are working with
a steering committee of AJLI Board members, current and past
League and Association leaders, AJLI Staff members and outside
experts. The process has also been designed to engage as many
of the 292 Leagues and their 160,000 members as possible.
Through use of current technology including webinars, online video,
online groups, Flip cameras and more, AJLI is reaching out to its
membership to create a true conversation. Junior League member
engagement in the development and refinement of a
strategic roadmap with continue through 2009 and into 2010.
‘I am proud of what Junior League members have
accomplished and are accomplishing today. We are an
organization that truly makes a difference. But we exist today
in a world where women’s lives are very different and where
opportunities to volunteer abound,” says AJLI Executive
Director Susan Danish. “We would be doing a disservice
to our 108-year history if we did not address the future…
who we can be and what we can mean to women and their
communities in the next decades.”
If you are a Junior League member and would like to learn
more about the Strategic Planning Process, please visit the
Member Area at AJLI.org and click on the Roadmap for the
