President’s page Jump on the JLM Bus Mission The Junior League of Minneapolis is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. It’s reminiscent of the first day of school – seeing many faces I haven’t seen all summer, getting back into the school schedule, meeting my new teacher and of course feeling so optimistic about what the school year would bring. I feel the same way about Junior League in September, as I love seeing JLM friends I didn’t get a chance to connect with during the summer, talking with everyone about their placements and sharing all the excitement for the year ahead. This September, I have to say, I am especially excited about our General Meeting. Our entire meeting is going to celebrate YOU, our Members in Motion, as well as showcase new tools and resources to enhance your JLM member experience. Honoring our traditions, we will formally welcome and introduce our New Members and Transfers for the 2009-2010 year. In addition, we will provide updates on three significant projects that the JLM Leadership team has been heavily involved in implementing just in time Thank you to our corporate sponsors: • PLATINUM • • GOLD • • SILVER • Eminent Interior Design September 2009 for September: the rollout of our new website powered by Digital Cheetah, a branded JLM social media strategy and the development of a new training series titled Leadership & Lattes. Lastly, I am absolutely delighted to announce that we will feature Julie Gilbert, CEO and Founder of WOLF Means Business, as our keynote speaker at our first General Meeting. I can’t think of a more inspirational, passionate and successful woman to kick off our new League year. Julie’s mission to inspire women across the globe and provide them with the leadership skills they need to transform themselves and their environments for the better is contagious! As a working professional, I am in awe of her accomplishments and enthusiasm and am thrilled to share her with you! So jump on the bus and join us for our first day of school at JLM! Plan to spend a night connecting with new and old JLM friends, celebrating our year ahead and joining in the excitement!
We Heard You! Rachel Smith, VP Membership On behalf of the 2009-2010 Board of Directors, I want to let you know how excited we are to kick off a new League year! We have changes in the works to help our members continue to realize their potential, meet new friends and make a difference in the community. In the spring, many of you participated in the annual JLM Membership and Marketing Survey. The Board took your feedback and used it to help make important decisions about where to focus our time this year. Following is a summary of some of your concerns and what we are doing to respond: “Improve the website. Make it easier to track requirements.” Mission accomplished as we launched our new website in August. You will be amazed at how easy it is to navigate the website, determine your outstanding requirements, buy tickets to events, and get the information you need! “Increase the size of membership through recruitment and retention.” We added a year-round recruitment subcommittee to the New Member Committee, and they began their recruiting efforts right away with a spring social. It is quite obvious that it paid off with our biggest New Member class in many years – 114 New Members! “Continue to develop leadership skills.” We are excited to launch the Leadership & Lattes series this year. Join your JLM friends for these dynamic training opportunities that will help you become a better volunteer and a more empowered woman. “Have more events where Leaguers can meet, have conversations and make connections.” What are you doing this third Thursday? Mark your calendars because our Third Thursdays are now Third Thursday Happy Hours. What a great way to meet up with JLM friends for some girl time! “Build a stronger mentoring program.” This year our mentoring program is working hard to create a meaningful relationship between each mentor and her mentoring circle, a small group of mentees who will meet to share stories, seek advice and participate in training discussions that tie to a monthly training topic. “Make the meetings more dynamic, celebrate successes and provide more information about past projects.” The Board began to reassess how we can engage and enlighten our members at our General Meetings. Come see what we have in store at our first General Meeting in September! We want your time in the JLM to be meaningful, and we want you to know that the Board will continue to work hard to implement changes that our membership has requested. Make plans to attend many JLM events and start reaping the benefits of belonging to such an amazing organization! The Junior League of Minneapolis is dedicated to developing the potential of women through training and leadership experiences within the League and in the community. The Leadership & Lattes Training Series is designed to help our members develop skills that will suit them within the League and in their personal and professional lives. Our theme for the 2009-2010 League year is Mission in Motion. The Leadership & Lattes Training Series furthers this mission by inspiring our members to invest in themselves, to feel empowered and to move into the community to make positive changes.
