Books 4 Kids
Brooke Allocco, Books 4 Kids Committee
Books 4 Kids is entering its sixth
year as a JLM community program
with its mission to give at-risk
children books to keep and to
provide them with opportunities to
come together to read.
According to the McKnight
Foundation, 41% of third graders
in the Twin Cities read below grade
level. This year, Books 4 Kids plans
to collect and distribute 30,000
books to Minneapolis children in
need by partnering with over 20
organizations that serve children
who are economically at risk.
In addition to collecting books at
member-sponsored book drives and
other events throughout the year,
Books 4 Kids will be participating
in the fourth annual Read for the
Record program. Sponsored by the
Pearson Foundation and Jumpstart,
Read for the Record aims to enable
over one million children to read Eric
Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar
on October 8, setting a world record
in the process. To support this effort,
Books 4 Kids will be collecting new
and gently used copies of this book
at the September General Meeting.
Please bring
a copy to the
meeting and
help support
this great
program!
