With a job offer from Target for Betsen and an Eden Prairie company buying Sonal’s Houston-based company it was time to move north. Sonal credits the timing of the move to help ease into the northern climate. Moving in May allowed a nice reprieve from already hot temps in Texas while entering Minnesota in a very tolerable time. Living in Edina offers easy access to the lakes for running and biking and a fenced in back yard for Kona. The pleasant summer helped ease the Philips into the winter. They even joined an outdoor broomball league this past winter which grants instant residency status to any new Minnesotan. Back in Texas, many of Sonal’s friends were joining the Junior League. Wanting to meet women and get involved in the community led Sonal to find the Minneapolis chapter within a few months of moving. As a New Member this past year, she has really enjoyed getting her feet on the ground with a lot of new member social interaction and planning a new member event with Bolder Options. She has also volunteered at the Breakfast with Santa event, Eve of the Eve, the Crisis Nursery, and Kids in the Kitchen. Getting involved directly with kids and the community has helped Sonal feel like she’s “actually done something” to improve the community. The spring and summer hold fun travel plans and visits from family ready to brave the northland. With the coming new League year, Sonal looks forward to getting experience in new areas and seeing how the JLM touches the community. By getting involved in the Junior League of Minneapolis Sonal is getting more connected to her new home.
Members HEADQUARTERS INFORMATION By Rachel LaTour, Training & Leadership Development Where do I park at The Woman’s Club (TWC)? When is the JLM office? When can I use the office for a meeting? What resources are available to me as a Junior League Member through The Woman’s Club? If you have ever asked yourself any of these questions, you may want to take a quick look at the current policies regarding the use of JLM Headquarters and The Woman’s Club. Where is the Junior League of Minneapolis Headquarters? The Junior League Headquarters is located at The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis. TWC is located in the city of Minneapolis, one block south of Loring Park, on the east side of Hennepin Avenue across from the Walker Art Center. Directions are posted at www.womansclub.org. The address is: The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis, 410 Oak Grove Street, Minneapolis, MN 55403 What is TWC? TWC is a non-profit woman’s organization operated for charitable, education, civic and social services. Its mission is to advance collegiality and community service. There are approximately 700 members. The organization celebrated its 100th year in 2007. Similar to a country club, members pay dues for the use of both the Clubhouse and the Club’s services. Parking TWC has two parking lots on Oak Grove Street. One is next to the Club and the other is east and across the street. Both lots are marked with signs. Dress Code The dress code of the Club is business casual to formal. Designer jeans are allowed. You needn’t worry about the dress code if you are running in to pick up your mail, visit with Deb or use our work room. However, if you and your committee plan to use the Club for a meeting, we ask that you try to follow the dress code. Security/Entrance Currently JLM members can access the JLM office between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. If you need to access the office at other times please contact Deb Johnson at the office, deb@jlminneapolis.org or 612-238-8460. TWC Meeting Room Availability JLM can use our boardroom at TWC for daytime meetings between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. JLM can use our boardroom at TWC for evening meetings, free of charge on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. JLM can use our boardroom with a $35/security fee per hour for meetings on the second or fourth Tuesdays of the month after 4:00 pm. (The first and third Tuesdays it is used by the BOD starting at 6:00 pm.) JLM can use the other two upstairs rooms (Alice Winter and Centennial) at no charge if the JLM boardroom is already occupied, and if TWC does not already have it under reservation. Room reservations will be first come, first serve. Food & beverages for meetings can be arranged through the office. For committee meetings, this is considered a personal expense and committee members should reimburse the JLM for their portion of the expenses (the JLM will be billed). All room reservations need to be made at least one week in advance (preferably more). Food at Meetings Our agreement states that food used in the Club must be purchased from The Woman’s Club.
