Members 6 NEW MEMBERS IN MOTION! By Erin Schultz, 2009-2010 Recruitment Director ChugaChugaChoo-Choo!! The New Member Committee is in the early stages of planning the recruitment strategy for the 2009- 2010 JLM year. The goal for the year is another 85 new members and we need your help! The majority of our new members are referred by active members in the League – so please contact us about any fantastic women you know who may be interested in the JLM. Information sessions will be held throughout the summer in members’ homes. We are also planning on having a panel of members (Active, New Member, Sustainer) at each session to give various perspectives on the League. Information session dates are: May 7, May 20, June 4, June 17, July 9, and July 22. If you are interested in hosting or participating in a panel, please let us know! This is a great way to get a head start on your membership requirements. Please send any potential new member contacts and/or questions to newmembers@jlminneapolis.org. We’re looking forward to a very successful 2009-2010 recruitment! HIGHLIGHTING THE SISTER TEAM: EMILY SERRANO AND SARAH HANSON By Michelle Fettig, New Member Committee Emily Serrano and Sarah Hanson joined the Junior League of Minneapolis this year together, thanks to Geri Datus- Ward. Emily works at Target in Product Sourcing and is married to Joe. Sarah works for Guy Carpenter doing reinsurance accounting and claims. They are both doing amazing things for the Junior League this year and learning a lot about the community. Some of their achievements include volunteering at the Crisis Nursery, Impact Day, Feed My Starving Children, and Kids in the Kitchen. Sarah highlighted the inspirational stories she’s heard from League members at some of the general meetings, as being some of the most profoundly inspiring women in the community. Both Sarah and Emily are happy to meet so many fascinating League members and new friends through socials, volunteering, and meetings. OPEN LETTER TO NEW MEMBERS By Pat Fleet, Sustainer Rep to New Member Committee Congratulations to the JLM New Members who will become Actives at the May general meeting! We hope you enjoyed this year. Led by excellent chair, Rachel Smith, the committee members all worked hard getting to know you! Our months together were full of activity: meeting new people, making new friends, organizing calendars, maneuvering through the JLM website, learning the League structure, and, we hope, developing pride in our organization celebrating 85 years of service in Minneapolis! The colorful new member advisors agreed that you are an outstanding class, and raved about your commitment to attend meetings, trainings, socials, fundraisers, and project shifts. You jumped right into committee placements during the second part of the year. Many of you attended the Placement Fair to help determine the best fit for your first Active year. During your long Junior League life ahead, we hope you have warm, fulfilling experiences in a variety of positions, and develop in leadership roles. The JLM will train you, and members will give support; we know you will do wonderful things. We will closely follow your successes! Personally, it’s been a joy to serve as Sustainer Rep to the organized, fun-loving, energetic New Member committee. Thank you to Rachel Smith for leading us, to all committee members for your devotion to make “It All Begins With Your First Year” a positive first impression, and to Stephanie Ruppert for being our gracious committee meeting hostess. Congratulations and thank you to those who will carry over their passion into 2009-10, including Stephanie Ruppert, New Member chair, and Erin Schultz, New Member Recruiter. Finally, please reach out to your friends and colleagues who would also benefit from membership in the Junior League. Encourage them to join us as New Members next year! There is more fun ahead and always more good work to be done in the community.
Members 85 LEAGUERS: ANNIE GORMAN GIRL ON THE GO By Gail Ballantyne, Transfer Member BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT FUN FACTS Annie Gorman on right Hometown: Edina Education: University of Iowa, BS in Finance Joined JLM: 2005 Exercise: Training for a triathlon Favorite Restaurants: Lucia’s and Bar Lurcat Annie Gorman keeps busy with a variety of activities—her skills range from financial analysis to underwater exploration. Right now, the Junior League benefits from her work as chair of Helping Hands. That involves identifying diverse, local organizations most in need of JLM assistance and coordinating Impact Day and other done-in-a-day projects. “The League is a really great outlet for meeting people, meeting inspirational women and helping the community,” she says. “I think my committee is very enthusiastic and passionate about coming up with new organizations, events, and ideas.” This year’s Impact Day offered two volunteer events for members and was especially meaningful to partner organizations because of the tough economy. “It makes you proud to be a part of the Junior League, to see everyone band together to support our community,” Annie says of the unprecedented participation. She has also worked on Special Events, Gifts and Grants (SEGG) Committee and looks forward to serving on Nominating Committee next year. “It’s a really easy way for you to get outside of your comfort zone,” Annie says of her League experience so far. “It’s a good way to get leadership experience in nonthreatening way.” She credits the Junior League with providing balance against her work and school commitments. As a treasury analyst at Wells Fargo, Annie currently examines information around the recent Wachovia merger worth billions of dollars and is also working on her MBA part-time at St. Thomas. “The theme of this year for me has been beyond busy, but it’s been worth it,” she adds. In her limited free time, Annie enjoys exploring new restaurants with friends. During the summer, she sails and water skis at her family’s cabin up north. Annie also enjoys checking out the scenery under the water during warm-weather getaways and became SCUBA certified when she was just 13 years old. She’s also training for her first triathlon this summer. “I like the challenge of a race,” Annie says. No matter how she places, one thing is for sure. When it comes to Annie’s involvement in the community and the JLM, there’s no slowing down. You are in luck! Bachman’s is hosting the May Third Thursday event. Larry Pfarr will lead a one-hour discussion on “Trends in Gardening.” Larry has presented at the last two Bachman’s events and he is always a hit. All attendees will receive vouchers to use on purchases at Bachman’s store locations (excluding Lunds/Byerly’s locations) – 15% of total purchases will be donated to the Junior League of Minneapolis.
