Established in 1901 by 19 year-old Mary Harriman in New York City, the mission of The Junior League was clear: to improve child health, nutrition and literacy among at-risk populations. Mary, the debutante daughter of a railroad magnate, recruited 80 of her young female friends to help achieve her goal. It didn’t take long for Mary to realize that the best recipe for success would be to create a community of women trained as skilled volunteers. She went to work cultivating an organization where women could volunteer, develop their professional skills and improve their community without forsaking any of their familial responsibilities. One hundred and ten years later, The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. is still the embodiment of that mission—but now there’s a fresh new face representing the typical Junior Leaguer. “This huge shift has happened,” said Carol Truesdell, President of the Junior League of Minneapolis from 1971–73. “When I was in the Junior League, all the members were women who weren’t working for money. We had volunteer careers and there were only a handful who had paid careers—basically a teacher, a nurse or a secretary. To think about where it is today—it’s just like flipping the whole program upside down.” Leaguers today are different. “The women of this generation’s League are constant participants in all kinds of professional development through their work,” said Patty Murphy, a JLM member since 1975. “Community service and giving back is already in their DNA, so this is a way of life for them.” But it wasn’t always this way. Mary Harriman founded the Junior League to offer women responsibilities outside of the home through an organization that addressed social, health and educational issues effecting the community at large. To keep the organization female-run, Mary devised the infrastructure which is still in place today and which enables members to govern and lead the League.
