TOP TEN LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH
GOAL: To be the healthiest county in Michigan.
To become a healthy community, we must understand what threatens our health and
what we can do to prevent illness. A good place to start is to review the leading causes of
death. In 2008, the 10 leading causes of death accounted for a little over 75% of all deaths
occuring in Calhoun County. The top two causes of death (heart disease and cancer)
accounted for nearly half (45.4%) of all deaths. The majority of the leading causes of death
are chronic diseases that, to a large degree, are preventable. Health-damaging behaviors
– in particular, tobacco use, lack of physical activity, and poor nutrition – are major
contributors to heart disease and cancer, Calhoun County’s leading killers.
