Workgroups<br />

ADULT OUTCOMES<br />

Goal: Work to ensure coordinated and accessible services in support of self-sufficiency for all residents of Calhoun<br />

County<br />

Strategy:<br />

• Support financial literacy programs/ initiatives addressing the needs of individuals striving for self-sufficiency<br />

• Honor/respond to cultural differences regarding fi nances<br />

• Provide information on alternatives to predatory fi nancial practices<br />

• Provide information through a variety of mediums to help professionals and the community at large<br />

understand fi nancial literacy issues relating to needs/gaps and responses/solutions<br />

• Encourage and support the ongoing work of Inspire Community Development Federal Credit Union<br />

Accomplishments:<br />

• Creation of a traveling display featuring fi nancial recipes for success in attaining self-suffi ciency<br />

• Hosted a national expert on personal and family fi nance for a community-wide presentation and<br />

special presentations to local high school and college students<br />

• Supported the opening of Inspire Community Development Federal Credit Union through<br />

announcements, press releases, and assistance with promotional/marketing materials<br />

• Developed the Community Financial Fitness Club - a follow-up effort for low-income families and<br />

individuals to both learn and share ways to become fi nancially fi t<br />

Next Steps:<br />

• Continue to increase community outreach through the Community Financial Fitness Club, traveling<br />

displays, website, youth events, press releases, and postcard series<br />

• Continue to provide support to the Inspire Community Development Federal Credit Union<br />

• Update and maintain a resource list of available county-wide fi nancial literacy efforts<br />

• Explore/Introduce new initiatives such as Individual Development Accounts and the Venture Grant<br />

• Host a youth-oriented national expert on personal and family fi nancial fi tness<br />

• County-wide facilitator of the Poverty Reducation Initative<br />

SUBSTANCE ABUSE WORKGROUP<br />

Goal: Improve county-wide indicators as they relate to substance abuse prevention, treatment, and<br />

aftercare services<br />

Strategy:<br />

• Advocate for programs, strategies and policy designed to improve substance abuse indicators<br />

Accomplishments:<br />

• Collaboration between prevention and treatment providers in Calhoun County<br />

• Representation at the Substance Abuse Regional <strong>Coordinating</strong> Agency through relationship with<br />

County Commissioners and local providers<br />

• <strong>Part</strong>nered with Substance Abuse Data Committee to identify gaps, barriers, needs, and solutions<br />

Next Steps:<br />

• Increase involvement of additional substance abuse treatment providers in efforts of the Substance<br />

Abuse Workgroup<br />

• Continue working with the Substance Abuse Data Committee to identify data needs for future planning<br />

• Develop educational, county-wide strategies to address and reduce Marijuana use by adolescents<br />
