COTTINGHAM J Private G/8491 John Albert COTTINGHAM. 6 th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died Thursday 3 rd May 1917 aged 20 years. Born Rolvenden. Enlisted Faversham. Resided Throwley, Faversham. Son of Henry Obid and Jemima Cottingham of Halden Place, Rolvenden, Kent. John has no known grave. His name appears on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. Panel reference Bay 2. The day that John died his battalion was in frontline trenches near Monchy, France. The battalion went forward at 0345 hours in complete darkness. The battalion’s objective was Keeling Copse. This position was reached but it could not be consolidated because of repeated enemy counter attack. About 250 men were killed in this action (including John). He was killed in what was known as the Third Battle of The Scarpe 12
