HYLAND E Private L/6001 Edwin HYLAND. 1 st Battalion, The Buffs (East <strong>Kent</strong> Regiment). Died Sunday 18 th October 1914. Born Rolvenden. Enlisted Canterbury. Resided Cheriton, Folkestone. Edwin has no known grave. His name appears on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Warneton, Belgium. Panel reference 2. The Ashford 1918 Absentee Voters List gives – Little Halden Cottages, Rolvenden Private 5650 Richard Obed HYLAND. 5 th Royal (Irish) Lancers. The day that Edwin died the 1 st battalion was in action near Radinghem in the vicinity of the Chateau de Flandres. Edwin’s name appears on the Plugstreet Memorial in Belgium. Although Plugstreet Wood is only a few miles from Radinghem, it seems rather unusual that his name should be placed there and not on a memorial in France closer to Radinghem. Son of E and Jane Hyland of Little Halden Farm, Rolvenden, <strong>Kent</strong>. Buried in the Villers Hill British Cemetery, Villers Guislain, France. Grave reference 11.D.8.
