Air Mechanic 2 nd Class (W.T Operator) F/6276 Harry (Henry) Richard WARD. Royal Naval<br />
Air Service (RNAS). RNAS Airship Station Howden. RNAS Airship Station Kingsnorth, Isle<br />
of Grain, <strong>Kent</strong> (HMS President II). Died Saturday 21 st July 1917 aged 18 years. Born 2 nd March<br />
1899. Son of Percy Richard and Ellen Ward of High Street, Rolvenden, <strong>Kent</strong>. Buried locally in the<br />
Rolvenden (St Mary) Churchyard, Rolvenden, Ashford, <strong>Kent</strong>. Grave reference – North of church<br />
tower.<br />
Educated at the Ashford Grammar School from 2 nd May 1913 to 1915. His name appears in the<br />
School’s book of Remembrance.<br />
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission list Harry’s unit as HMS President whereas the<br />
GRO Great War Death indexes show the airship C.11.<br />

The <strong>Kent</strong>ish Express reported Harry’s demise –<br />
“Harry was serving at the Royal Naval Air Service Airship Station (HMS President II) at<br />
Kingsnorth on the Isle of Grain in <strong>Kent</strong>. He was killed whilst flying in the C.11A airship over the<br />
North Sea”.<br />
