Private G/5135 Charles SMALL. 8 th Battalion, The Buffs (East <strong>Kent</strong> Regiment). Died<br />
Saturday 20 th May 1916 aged 34 years. Born Rolvenden. Enlisted Tenterden. Resided<br />
Rolvenden. Son of Alfred William and Jane Small of Hatters Hill Cottages, Rolvenden, <strong>Kent</strong>.<br />
Buried in the Berks Cemetery Extension, Hainaut, Belgium. Grave reference II.D.8.<br />
On the 1st January 1916 the 8 th battalion was at La Panne in France resting. On the 14 th January<br />
they moved to trenches in the Ypres Sector of Belgium. Casualties were light but the battalion lost<br />
men continuously. They remained in the Ypres area until June alternating between frontline<br />
trenches and billets at Poperinghe.<br />
