Joanna Lumley’s Nile
Thursdays at 8pm, beginning October 6
Repeats Saturdays at 5pm
British actress Joanna Lumley is on the trip of a lifetime – exploring the River Nile, the longest
river in the world, from sea to source. In this four-part series, she travels upstream, visiting
the people who live and work along the famous river. Along the way she crosses some of the
most inhospitable landscapes on earth: from deserts where ancient civilizations once ruled, to
jungles where Victorian explorers underwent unspeakable suffering. It’s an epic adventure, and
as Joanna nears the end of her 6,700-km journey, she discovers that hacking through the jungle
to her final goal – the river’s newest source in Rwanda – is not for the faint-hearted.
Local Charm
Meeting the locals is part of any great journey, and with her soft voice and genteel manners, Joanna Lumley charmed many that she
met along the way – including, apparently, a camel. His name was Charlie Brown, and the affection was mutual. “I loved his whiffling
kisses, huge teeth and whiskers,” said Joanna in an interview with ITV. “And I loved the softness of his feet. Camels feet are like
sheepskin slippers. No hooves, no toe nails, just a soft pad. And when they walk there is complete silence.”
