This fall’s 30 th season of
Knowledge Network continues
our tradition of excellence in
programming that encourages
independent thinking.
Knowledge Network was
launched in 1981, the same
year the Space Shuttle era was
inaugurated and the Canadarm
deployed on Columbia; Pierre
Trudeau was Prime Minister
of Canada and Bill Bennett
Premier of BC; Ronald Reagan
was sworn in as US President
and two months later nearly
assassinated; and martial law
was imposed on Communist
Poland. Many will remember it
as the year Prince Charles wed
Princess Diana. In 1981, the Museum
of Modern Art returned
Pablo Picasso’s masterpiece,
Guernica, to his homeland after
the restoration of democracy
in Spain. Picasso had painted
Guernica to bring international
attention to the Spanish Civil
War and the suffering it had
inflicted on civilians.
