Dr. Marye Anne Fox,<br />

the 7 th Chancellor of<br />

the University of<br />

California, San Diego,<br />

is a world-renowned<br />

physical organic<br />

chemist, whose work has<br />

influenced mechanistic chemistry, materials<br />

science, <strong>and</strong> solar energy conversion. An<br />

elected member of the National Academy of<br />

Sciences, Fox also advises on US policy on<br />

science <strong>and</strong> education. She has served as a<br />

vice chair of the US National Science Board<br />

<strong>and</strong> currently serves as a member of President<br />

Bush's Council of Advisors on Science <strong>and</strong><br />

Technology. She will speak during the banquet<br />

on Friday, August 15, 2008.<br />

Dr. Suh, Sang-Kee is a<br />

congressman of the <strong>Korean</strong><br />

National Assembly <strong>and</strong> the<br />

President of the Assembly<br />

Digital Forum. He has a Ph.D.<br />

Degree from Drexel University.<br />

He was a senior researcher at<br />

Ford Motors, the President of Korea Institute of<br />

Machinery <strong>and</strong> Materials, a professor of Hoseo<br />

University, <strong>and</strong> a member of the Assembly<br />

Science, Technology <strong>and</strong> Information<br />

Committee. He will speak during a plenary<br />

session on Friday, August 15, 2008.<br />

Fran Allen is an IBM<br />

Fellow Emerita at the T.<br />

J. Watson Research<br />

Laboratory with a<br />

specialty in compilers<br />

<strong>and</strong> program optimization<br />

for high performance<br />

computers.<br />

This work led to Fran being named the recipient<br />

of ACM’s 2006 Turing Award. She is a<br />

member of the <strong>American</strong> Philosophical Society<br />

<strong>and</strong> the National Academy of <strong>Engineers</strong>, <strong>and</strong> is<br />

a Fellow of the <strong>American</strong> Academy of Arts <strong>and</strong><br />

Sciences, ACM, IEEE, <strong>and</strong> the Computer<br />

History Museum. She has served on numerous<br />

national technology boards <strong>and</strong> holds several<br />

honorary doctorates.<br />

Dr. Sunggi Baik is the<br />

President of Pohang<br />

University of Science<br />

<strong>and</strong> Technology. He<br />

obtained his Ph.D. in<br />

Materials Science from<br />

Cornell University <strong>and</strong><br />

was a researcher at Oak Ridge National<br />

Laboratory. Since he joined POSTECH, he has<br />

held many senior positions including Vice-<br />

President (1998-2000). He is a Fellow of<br />

<strong>American</strong> Ceramic Society <strong>and</strong> member of<br />

World Academy of Ceramics, <strong>and</strong> has received<br />

numerous awards including Outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

Achievement Award <strong>and</strong> Best Publication<br />

Award. He will speak during the banquet on<br />

Saturday, August 16, 2008.<br />

Dr. Efim Isaakovich<br />

Zelmanov, a professor<br />

of mathematics at<br />

University of California,<br />

San Diego, received<br />

Fields Medal, the most<br />

prestigious award for the<br />

mathematicians, at the<br />

International Congress of Mathematicians in<br />

Zürich in 1994. He is known for his work on<br />

combinatorial problems in non-associative<br />

algebra <strong>and</strong> group theory. He was born in<br />

Khabarovsk, Russia in 1955. He obtained<br />

doctoral degree at Novosibirsk State University<br />

in1980, <strong>and</strong> a higher degree at Leningrad State<br />

University in 1985. He had a position in<br />

Novosibirsk until 1987. In 1990, he moved to<br />

the United States, becoming a professor at the<br />

University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was at the<br />

University of Chicago in 1994/5, at Yale<br />

University till 2002, then he moved to the<br />

University of California, San Diego.<br />
