e culture Happy Diamond Jubilee India! Over 3,000 people gathered at Manukau’s Telstra Stadium on Sunday January the 24th to celebrate the 60th anniversary of India’s Republic Day. Chief guest was former Mayor of Manukau Sir Barry Curtis, who has had a long association with the Indian community. He unfurled the Indian fl ag before a parade of colourful groups. The Indian civilisation had existed peacefully for thousands of years when the East India Company gained a foothold in 1600, starting a spice trade. Colonisation followed, and along with it came 90 years of rebellion against the Raj rule. India fi nally gained independence from the British on August 15, 1947. The Constitution was written in English and later translated into Hindi on January 24, 1950. Its preamble pledges India to be a “sovereign socialist secular democratic republic,” with every citizen guaranteed the right to vote and fundamental rights protected by a single integrated judicial system. Republic Day gives Indians throughout the world an opportunity to commemorate the sacrifi ces of those who stood up for independence, including Mahatma Ghandi, and to celebrate the tremendous progress made by the nation since gaining independence.
