Sari Gilman Aronson, M.D., head of psychiatry and clinical
associate professor of internal medicine, was nominated by the
University Medical Student Council for the Humanism in Medicine
Award in 2002-2003 by students at the University of Illinois College
of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign.
Jennifer Bloom, Ed.D., associate dean for student affairs, attended
the Salzburg Seminar. The seminar that she attended focused on
“Academic Career Patterns” and is part of The Universities Project,
a multi-year series of conferences and seminars focusing on the
advancement of higher education reform. Participants, who generally
attend by invitation only, came from all over the world. Jenny reports
that, “I walk away from the experience having a much greater
appreciation for all that we have here in the United States, a much
better grasp of international issues as they relate to higher education,
and with a number of new wonderful friends from all over the world!”
Gregory G. Freund, M.D., associate professor and head of
pathology, served as the chair of the Budget and Finance Committee of
the American Society of Cytopathology for 2002-2003. Ventana Medical
Systems awarded a grant to Dr. Freund, as principal investigator, for
research of “Comparison of Inform HPV and Hybrid Capture 2 HPV
DNA Testing Using The SurePath Test Pack.”
Martha U. Gillette, Ph.D., professor and head of cell and structural
biology and professor of molecular and integrative physiology, was
awarded the 2002 Outstanding Mentor of the Medical Scholars Program,
nominated by four of her current MSP students. She served on the
editorial board of Experimental Neurology during 2002-2003 and was
appointed associate editor of Sleep. Dr. Gillette was named chair of the
Chronobiology Gordon Research Conference, to be convened in 2005,
and made keynote presentations at several international meetings,
including her address on “The Neurobiology of Time: Circadian
Rhythms & Sleep” at the International Conference on the Frontiers of
Biomedical Sciences: Behavior and Genomics in Beijing, China, in
October 2002. Professor Gillette continues to serve as vice president of
the National Sleep Foundation. She participated in a Continuing Medical
Education (CME) symposium, speaking on “Advances in Circadian
Neuroscience” at the Association of Professional Sleep Societies 17th
Annual Meeting in Chicago in 2003. On campus, Professors Gillette and
Jonathan V. Sweedler, Ph.D., director, Biotechnology Center, co-chaired
two of UIUC Chancellor Nancy Cantor’s cross-campus initiatives,
“PharmaEngineering TM : Neural Repair in the Nano Domain” and
“Cell as a MicroMachine.”
William Greenough, Ph.D., a professor of psychology and
psychiatry, the director of the Center for Advanced Study, and a
Swanlund Endowed Chair, received the 2003 award for outstanding
research achievement from the Society for Research in Child
Development. Dr. Greenough will also serve the Society for
Neuroscience as treasurer-elect for 2003-2004 and treasurer for
2004-2005.
Richard I. Gumport, Ph.D., associate dean for academic affairs and
professor of biochemistry, recently served as co-director for a laboratory
course sponsored by the U.S. National Academies and the Howard
Hughes Medical Institute. The course was held in Vilnius, Lithuania,
at the Institute of Biotechnology. Twelve experts from around the world
taught the course, and the participants were young scientists from
countries from the former Soviet Union. The topic was “Molecular
Interaction of Proteins and DNA.” Dr. Gumport commented, “These
students will be the future leaders of science in their countries.”
Dr. John Gergen Retires
Dr. John Gergen at his Retirement Reception in May honoring his years with the
COM-UC. Dr. Gergen joined the College in 1986 and served as head of psychiatry
from 1986 to 2001.
James Hall, Ed.M., assistant dean for student affairs, received the
2003 Carl W. Knox Award, which is given for research in the field of
student personnel administration. Jim’s work includes an evaluation of
the combined baccalaureate/medical degree program offered at the
University of Illinois at Chicago, which allows qualified students to
pursue their undergraduate degree with a guarantee of admission to
the professional program of their choice.
