Patricia J. O’Morchoe, M.D., and Charles C.C. O’Morchoe, M.D. Patricia J. O’Morchoe Memorial It is with deep sadness that the College received word that Patricia Jean O’Morchoe, M.D., died on July 5, 2003. Dr. O’Morchoe joined the faculty of the College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign in 1984 as professor of pathology and was appointed head of the department in 1994. She was director of courses in both the M-1and M-2 years and won many awards for excellence in teaching, including the University of Illinois at Chicago Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her research in the fields of cytology and lymphology resulted in numerous publications of journal articles, book chapters, and abstracts. Dr. Charles O’Morchoe, her husband, served as regional dean of the College from 1984 to 1997. Allan Levy, professor emeritus at the College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign, recalled Dr. O’Morchoe: “Working with Jean was a real joy; I came to know her vast knowledge, but more than that I came to know her kindness and consideration for all those with whom she worked. There is no end to the list of good things that come to mind when I think about Dr. O’Morchoe: how she cared for and taught the students who worked with her in the lab, how hard she worked to teach a world-class course in pathology with scant resources (and succeeded), and what a good friend she was to me and to all of us.” The O’Morchoes established the Patricia J. and Charles C.C. O’Morchoe Leadership Award in 1999 to provide an award for an outstanding student at the College of Medicine enrolled in the Medical Scholars Program. Kathleen Buetow As the department head of pediatrics since the College of Medicine’s clinical program began, Dr. Kathleen Buetow has shared her knowledge and experience with hundreds of medical students over the past three decades. With responsibilities for overseeing curriculum development and the core clerkship in pediatrics, she has played an integral role in shaping the College and educating its students. Her selection as the 2003 Special Recognition Award recipient honors that work. Her career began with a childhood interest in medicine and a fascination with the role of physician. While attending medical school at the University of Maryland, a weekend job at the local hospital afforded her the opportunity to deliver babies. Although she enjoyed the work, Dr. Buetow found herself to be much more interested in the baby than the mother and so focused on pediatrics. After completing her residency, she joined the Baltimore City Hospital’s staff, where her work with premature infants led her to pursue research in neonatal mortality while earning her doctorate in public health from Johns Hopkins. M. Kathleen Buetow, M.D., Dr.P.H. Head, Department of Pediatrics Dr. Buetow’s affiliation with Carle pediatrics began in 1965. She has established a reputation not only as a fine physician but also as an expert in the evaluation of children for possible abuse and neglect. She continues that work as a member of the board of directors of the newly established Children’s Advocacy Center in Champaign County. The children aren’t the only ones who benefit from Dr. Buetow’s work in the area of abuse and neglect. “It’s important to me that medical students see the need to understand all the facets of a child’s life in order to provide the best care. We focus on health, of course, but we also have to look at the environment and the social structures in which children live. Having that comprehensive view and a caring nature are the qualities I feel are most important for a physician.” 16 T h e P o w e r o f C o l l a b o r a t i o n
An Award-Winning Resident When the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists presented their resident physician investigator awards at the 2003 annual meeting, one of our own claimed first place. Gunjan Gandhi, M.D., who completed his internal medicine residency this spring, won the award for his study of the insulin drip protocols used for diabetic patients undergoing heart surgery at Carle Foundation Hospital. His research found that postoperative hyperglycemia could be better managed using a new protocol that was based on previous knowledge of a patient’s insulin sensitivity or resistance rather than standard dosing. “Even though the mean blood glucose values did not differ significantly with the new protocol, the episodes of low as well as high blood glucose were significantly reduced with use of the new protocol,” Dr. Gandhi says. Robert Kirby, M.D., associate dean for clinical affairs, suggested the topic to Dr. Gandhi and was pleased with the results and the recognition Dr. Gandhi received. According to Dr. Kirby, the project “required a great deal of effort over a period of almost one year, from review of the literature; consulting with multiple institutions across the country regarding their care standards; identifying the current procedures and policies at Carle Hospital; designing a plan that could improve patient care; shepherding with input from multiple individuals from nursing and physician staff and pharmacy professionals; and finally shepherding it through the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee to a pilot project to validate the utility of the change.” Dr. Gandhi appreciated the opportunity to undertake a clinical research project. “It was extremely beneficial to work with multiple patients in an actual research study as opposed to a case study,” he says. Dr. Gandhi adds this award to a long list of honors he received from the Internal Medicine Residency Program, including the Professionalism Award, the Resident of the Year Award, and the Scholar of the Year Award. In July, he began a two-year fellowship in advanced general internal medicine at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine.
