Alumni Class Notes Academic Year 2002-2003 1981 Lance Becker, M.D., is a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago. He and his wife, Karin Rhodes, M.D., have two children, Nora and Eli. Wayne Wheeler, M.D., J.D., M.B.A., medical director of Community Health and Wellness at Southern Ohio Medical Center, recently won a Governor’s Award for Organizational Excellence. In addition, he was appointed by the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to the 2003 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrich National Quality Award. The award, created by public law in 1987, is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive. Wayne also became a grandfather in September 2002. 1983 Richard Rodarte, M.D., is the medical director of Medworks, the occupational health care center at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, Illinois. 1985 Paul Hattis, M.D., J.D., M.P.H., has assumed the position of acting concentration leader in health policy and management at Tufts University Medical School in Boston. Paul continues his research on hospital community benefits and charitable immunity for volunteer clinicians, as well as carrying out his teaching, administrative, and consulting responsibilities. 1986 Michael Bishop, M.D., M.B.A., of Bishop, Bryant & Dickerson Pediatrics in Sugar Land, Texas, was named one of America’s top pediatricians in 2002-2003 by the Consumer Research Council of America. He was also honored by the Texas Pediatrics Society for teaching medical students pediatrics and has been certified as a clinical research investigator. He is involved in studies of the efficacy and safety of pimerolimus 1% BID versus standard of care in the management of mild to severe atopic dermatitis in children aged 3 months to 11 years, and in the safety and efficacy of pentavalent human-bovine resistant rotavirus vaccine in studies of healthy infants. 1987 Pamela Bartels, M.D., M.S.W., is chief of the medical staff at McDowell Hospital in Marion, North Carolina, as well as a member of the board of trustees. Pam is also medical director of Autumn Care, assistant professor at the University of North Carolina,Asheville, and is currently enrolled in the Executive Master’s Program in Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. David Trawick, M.D., Ph.D., has assumed the positions of section editor for Gender Specific Medicine (Academic Press) and associate director of the pulmonary/critical care fellowship at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where he is assistant professor in pulmonology and critical care medicine. In addition, he continues his research on gender differences in high-risk asthma and is working on a kinetic model of long-term ventilator weaning. 1988 Ronald Cotterel, M.D., M.S., married Susan Gloystein in October 2002. Michael Green, M.D., M.S., has been promoted to associate professor in the departments of medicine & humanities at Penn State College of Medicine, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. With support from an NIH R01 grant, he has been conducting an evaluation of an interactive computer program to assist women with making decisions about genetic testing for susceptibility to breast cancer. He writes that he is “currently doing research in ethics and medicine, focusing on the use of interactive computers to help patients (and health care providers) with advance care planning.” 1989 John Burton, M.D., Ph.D., and his wife, Lori, welcomed Samuel Delos Burton to their family on April 25, 2003. Glenn Ciegler, M.D., Ph.D., practices with St. Croix Orthopaedics in Stillwater, Minnesota. Glenn also devotes some of his time to teaching and to research reviewing clinical results of total ankle arthroplasty and ankle ligament stabilization. Yasemin Ozcan, M.D., is associate medical director of Southwest Rehabilitation, Inc. and on the staff at Palos Community Hospital, in Palos Heights, Illinois, where she heads up the osteoporosis and lymphedema clinics. She is board certified in physical medicine/ rehabilitation as well as electrodiagnosis (EMG). Yasemin and her husband, Allan Ruby, M.D., class of 1990, have four sons - Nathan, Joel, Levi, and Samuel. 1990 Lisa Gould, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Texas, Galveston, was initiated as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in October 2002. Lisa was also awarded a grant from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand for her work on tissue-engineered flexor tendon grafts, and a pilot grant from the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center. Robert Pendleton, M.D., Ph.D., has a solo practice in ophthalmology in Oceanside, California, and is also a teaching attending at UCSD. 1991 Robert Bert, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of radiology, Tufts New England Medical Center, was awarded a four-year R01 grant from NIH and a one-year bridge grant. His research is on redefining the blood aqueous barrier of the eye and on the role of changes in cerebral vascular compliance in stroke. 1992 Michael Cantor, M.D., Ph.D., appeared on the television show “Jeopardy” on April 1, 2003 and was the winner. He is currently the clinical director of the Boston VA Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center. James Glockner, M.D., Ph.D., is assistant professor of radiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Although he devotes about 75 percent of his time to clinical work, he is also involved in research on cardiovascular and body MRI as well as teaching and administrative work. Chicago Alumni Dinner April 14, 2003 1993 Linnea (Read) Boyev, M.D., Ph.D., is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Chicago. Linnea completed a residency at Johns Hopkins and a fellowship in surgical retina at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. Brian Hyslop, M.D., Ph.D., is an assistant professor of radiology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His focus is on expanding applications for cardiac MR and developing a closer relationship between UNC’s divisions of radiology and cardiology. Annette Schlueter, M.D., Ph.D., was awarded a four-year grant from the American Cancer Society to study dendritic cell subset function and development. 1994 Alexandra Adams, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of family medicine, University of Wisconsin, Madison, was awarded a K-23 grant from NIH and is part of an NIH R01 grant sponsored by the Native American Research Center for Health. Her work focuses on prevention of obesity in American Indian children, metabolic syndrome in children, and participatory research.
